Below is a list of players that Perfect Game USA has recognized as some of the top performers/prospects in the World Wood Bat tournament. Many of the players listed have been evaluated and recognized based on more than just statistics from the event. The list was done by the scouting staff that was in Jupiter and not necessarily by all Perfect Game personnel. This list has no correlation and is not to be confused with our Baseball America/Perfect Game USA Prospects Plus National ranking list. It is possible that some of these players could rank higher or lower in the overall national rankings.
There were nearly 1,500 players competing in this tournament. The top 30 seniors are listed on this page, and
| 1. Scott Kazmir, LHP/OF |
6'0/176 |
Houston, TX |
Team Florida USA 02 |
| Kazmir was the overall tournament MVP by showing his 94-96 mph fastball and plus slider on both occasions that he took the mound. He showed a good change-up for the first time, which made his stuff even harder to hit. He showed presence, athleticism and a unique ease at which he plays the game. He made some outstanding plays defensively on the mound and in center field. He also hit with the best of them. And his make-up is as good as it gets. He did nothing but fortify his #1 national ranking. Signing with Texas. |
| 2. Mike Pelfrey, RHP |
6'6/190 |
Wichita, KS |
Team Florida USA 02 |
| Mike was 92-95 mph with life and had a plus slider. He also had a change-up and split fingered fastball working for him in both appearances. He pitched aggressively and commanded the strike zone extremely well. He put himself right back where he belongs among the nations top prospects. Signing with Wichita State. |
| 3. Mark McCormick, RHP |
6'2/188 |
Clear Lake Shores, TX |
Houston Kyle Chapman |
| McCormick had the hardest fastball at the event clocking in at a top-speed of 98 mph. He looked very strong and flashed the best curveball we have seen from him to date. It was a plus breaking ball at times. The fastball lacks plus movement, but 97-98 is rare velocity. He was the top power pitcher in the tournament. The breaking ball has put him right up near the top of the national rankings. Signing with Baylor. |
| 4. B.J. Upton, SS |
6'3/170 |
Chesapeake, VA |
All-Star Baseball Academy |
| Upton ran a 6.47 in the 60 and had some good at bats including a towering Home Run. He has some of the best tools in the Nation and didn't hide any of them in Jupiter. He is very much looking like a very early pick next June. He is in our estimation the #1 position prospect in high school baseball. His actions and tools are very rare. |
| 5. Christian Madson, RHP |
6'8/230 |
Valrico, FL |
Baseball America |
| At 6 feet 8, Madson showed good body control and an ever-improving fastball that topped out at 94 mph. There is room for him to get even better and he already has the ability to pitch. He raised a lot of interest from the scouts and might be a good looking early draft pick in June. He is definitely a "skies the limit" type of prospect. Signing with Florida. |
| 6. Micah Owings, RHP/IF |
6'3/205 |
Gainsville, GA |
East Cobb |
| Owings was one of the best 2-way players in the tournament. He has power, plus hitting ability and looked like a top pitching prospect on the mound. His fastball topped out at 93 mph and he has a good breaking ball. He shows that he is one of the best prospects in America. |
| 7. Chris Gruler, RHP |
6'2/195 |
Brentwood, CA |
Team California 02 |
| Gruler looked very strong with a live 92-95 mph fastball and a good curve. He had very good command and was one of the hardest to hit pitchers in the tournament. He could be a top draft pick in June. If he continues to improve, he will go very early for sure. In fact, he should go early based on what he brings to the table now. Signing with Arizona State. |
| 8. Micah Schilling, IF |
6'0/185 |
Clinton, LA |
Bill Hood |
| Schilling was coming out of the middle of his football season and looked to be as comfortable as usual with a bat in his hands. He hit everything hard and showed some of the best hitting tools in the country. Most of the scouts at the event agreed. Plus he can run and play, He is the real deal. Signing with LSU. |
| 9. Brian McCann, C |
6'2/190 |
Duluth, GA |
East Cobb |
| McCann showed scouts a legitimate power, in the tournament. Everything he hit was hard, had carry, and wood did not affect his swing or his results. One of his HR's was arguably the longest and highest in the event. He is a strong hitter with fast hands and tremendous bat-speed. He also is one of the nations top defensive catchers. Signing with Alabama. |
| 10. Johnathan Broxton, RHP |
6'4/225 |
Waynesboro, GA |
Hoosier Bat |
| Broxton is a very big 230 pound imposing pitcher with a power fastball that topped out at 94 mph many times. He cruised by the competition and showed decent off-speed stuff and had command of the inner half. He was one of the best performers in Jupiter, that we had not seen prior to the tournament. Signing with Georgia Southern. |
| 11. Robert Andino, SS |
6'1/175 |
Miami, FL |
Miami Sluggers |
| Andino showed some of the best actions in the field and at the plate throughout the tournament right down to hitting an opposite field gapper in the Championship game. Plus arm from SS, line drive swing with power and was 93 mph on the mound to close out the Championship game. Under-rated - Top Prospect. |
| 12. Tom Wilhelmsen, RHP |
6'6/190 |
Tucson, AZ |
Team Florida USA 02 |
| Wilhelmsen brought his good stuff to Jupiter. He is an energetic pitcher who had good command of a curveball, change-up and a fastball that registered at 93 mph. He has an easy delivery, good arm action and a live fastrball. His loose arm and projectable frame give him an extremely high ceiling, making him very attractive to scouts. |
| 13. Matt Whitney, 3B |
6'3/195 |
Palm Beach Gardens, FL |
West Palm Beach |
| Whitney has one of the fastest bats and best swings out there. He was pitched to carefully but got his share of connections. He can really mash the ball and he does not strike out much. He even got stronger since mid-summer. He has one of the best bats we have seen from the right side in the past few years. Has signed with Clemson. |
| 14. Billy Mohl, RHP |
6'4/180 |
Sugarland, TX |
Houston Kyle Chapman |
| Mohl was breaking wood bats with his 90-92 mph fastball. Even more impressive was the fact that he was commanding 3 other pitches that include a good curveball, slider and change-up. Mr Mohl put himself front and center in next years draft. He really helped himself a ton in Jupiter. Signing with Tulane. |
| 15. Friedel Pinkston, RHP |
6'2/185 |
Hartwell, GA |
Baseball America |
| Pinkston showed some outstanding ability in Jupiter. He was 90-92mph and commanded the strike-zone well. There is a lot in him and we have seen him even better than Jupiter. He reminds us a little of a smaller version of Dewan Brazelton. He is one of the best pitching prospects out there. |
| 16. Alex Merricks, LHP |
5'11/180 |
Oxnard, CA |
Team Florida USA 02 |
| Merricks had 2 impressive outings of scoreless baseball. He was 90-93 mph with his fastball and had a good slider and change-up. He mixed his pitches well, hit spots and had a methodical approach to batters. He is one of the most difficult to hit pitchers, especially if you are a left handed hitter. He is not big, but he has giant stuff to go along with a plus fastball. Has signed with Arizona State. |
| 17. Clint Everts, RHP |
6'2/170 |
Cypress, TX |
Columbia Angels |
| Everts was one of the top 2-way players in Jupiter. He has outstanding tools in the field and at the plate. Super body with frame to build on and he was 90-92 on the mound. He is quickly becoming a highly sought after prospect in the scouting community. He did nothing but help himself at this event. He is for real! And seems to be getting better fast. Has signed with Baylor. |
| 18. Jhonathan Figueroa, LHP |
6'5/225 |
Porguesa, VZ |
Baseball America |
| Figueroa was a pitcher that showed one of the liveliest fastballs in Jupiter. It sat in the 87-89 range and topped out at 91 mph. He had a plus curveball that is impossible for lefties and had command with both of those pitches all weekend. At times he is just plain unhittable. At this time Figueroa is a free agent. |
| 19. Clay Dirks, LHP |
6'4/210 |
Hernando, MS |
PG USA Black |
| Dirks had only started pitching 3 weeks before the tournament and is being heavily considered as a top pitcher for June. He was 89 mph with nice late tail and had a good 77-79 change-up with hard down and away action to right-hand hitters. Good curve and strong, athletic body with an easy arm. Has been in the 90's. Keep a close eye on him this coming spring. Has signed with LSU. |
| 20. Evan Meek, RHP |
6'2/180 |
Bothell, WA |
Bayside Yankees |
| Meek showed his whip-like arm action and produced 93mph fastballs with a hard curve and did well against some good bats. He has a plus body and is flexible and athletic. He looked strong in Jupiter and we've seen him even better. One of the best arms in America. |
| 21. Ryan Rodriguez, OF/LHP |
6'5/210 |
Keller, TX |
Dallas Tigers |
| A bit of a pleasant surprise even though we have seen him pretty good before. One of the top hitting prospects in the tournament, Rodriguez has a good looking swing plane, good bat-speed, shows power with wood and has a solid build that projects well. He was up to 88 on the mound and knows how to pitch which may be his future being he is a smooth lefty and has a big league body. |
| 22. Allen Ponder, RHP |
6'4/220 |
Auburn, AL |
East Cobb |
| Ponder is a big, strong pitcher who has a good power fastball that sat in the low 90's and touched 93 mph. He looked like he could go 9 innings when he pitched in the tournament. He uses his body very well. Ponder is going to be watched like a hawk this coming spring. Signing with Alabama. |
| 23. Nick Starnes, RHP |
6'2/170 |
Haw River, NC |
North Carolina Warhawks |
| Starnes had a very good tournament, showing his long and easy arm that produced an 88-91 mph fastball and a nasty, late breaking curve with tight spin. One of the top FB/CB combo pitchers in Jupiter. We have seen him with more velocity and he really projects well. Signing with UNC Greensboro. |
| 24. Mark Romanczuk, LHP |
6'1/188 |
Newark, DE |
Team Florida USA 02 |
| Romanczuk is a smart lefty who throws his fastball, curveball and change-up with good command. He was nearly flawless and gave up only a few hits the entire tournament. His fastball was in the 88-90 range and he topped out at 92 mph. Romanczuk is one of the best pitchers in the nation. Signing with Stanford. |
| 25. Conor Lalor, RHP |
6'3/190 |
Germantown, TN |
Dulins Dodgers |
| Lalor is an impressive pitcher who registered 91 mph on radar and at times showed a plus slurve. He has the makings of 3 plus pitches and has a good professional approach on the field. Each time we see him we like him more. Perhaps that's the way scouts will see him next spring. Signing with South Carolina. |
| 26. Tyler Greene, SS |
6'3/175 |
Plantation, FL |
South Florida Giants |
| Outstanding SS tools and swung the bat well. He made a lot of contact and stole lots of bases. Greene has 5 tool potential and if he shows enough bat to scouts, he will surely go early in next Junes draft. There is no doubt about his athletic ability. He is one great hitting instructor away from a high draft position. Signing with Georgia Tech. |
| 27. Kevin Jepsen, RHP |
6'2/195 |
Sparks, NV |
Baseball America |
| Jepsen showed a 91 mph fastball and had a strong pitching performance. We know he has been better in the past. He has a plus slider and no nonsense delivery. Don't be surprised if Jepsen's name is called early next June. Signing with Nevada. |
| 28. Eddy Martinez-Esteve, OF |
6'3/195 |
Miami, FL |
Baseball America |
| Big strong OF prospect shows natural power. Ball jumps off this bat. Eddy has a great approach to hitting and hits the ball hard to all fields. He will hit lasers to right field with two strikes. He also possesses an average to plus arm in the outfield. Big league body! Signing with Florida State. |
| 29. Ryan Doherty, RHP |
7'1/224 |
Toms River, NJ |
Bill Hood |
| If there is a pitcher with a higher ceiling than Doherty, he wasn't in Jupiter. This 7 foot pitcher varied his release point but showed no control problems. He was in the high 80's and touched 90 mph with an easy motion. When he releases the ball out in front, he shows extreme potential. He got a lot of attention and will be followed heavily for the June draft. We think he is taller than 7'1" Signed with Notre Dame. |
| 30. Matt Capps, P/IF |
6'2/215 |
Douglasville, GA |
Baseball America |
| Had an 87-90 mph fastball and a hard curve. Solid body and nice arm action. Hit a few hard ones, showing serious power potential, too. Capps missed nearly all of the summer season due to a broken foot. He has thrown in the mid nineties and we suspect that he will be back to that velocity before long. Signing with LSU. |
