2013 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect and Underclass Showcases

The Orange pitching did their jobs, allowing only one hit while striking out a total of 10 batters in 4 innings of work. Starting the game and leading the way was left handed pitcher Garrett Davila (2015; Belmont, NC), who struck out all 6 batters he faced. He showed a quick arm and projects for more velocity. Today he topped out at 87 mph and showed a very good feel for a sharp 1/7 curveball at 75 mph and a curveball at 68 mph. 

Eric Mullinax (2015; Greer, SC) and James Shepherd (2015; Orangeburg, SC) each pitched an inning, striking out 2 batters a piece and both topped out at 75 mph. Mullinax sat 72-74 mph and flashed a 68 mph curveball, while Shepherd worked 73-75 mph with a nice feel for an 11/5 curveball with depth at 61 mph. 

The lone hit for the Royal team was a double by left handed hitting Vincent Addona (2015; Cary, NC), who drove the ball to the left center field gap.

Picking up singles for Orange was Ausar Rankin (2015; Statesville, NC), Austin Parsley (2016; Charlotte, NC), and Tanner Cain (2015; Chesnee, SC), who had a hard line drive single pull side. After Rankin got on, Parsley was able to drive him in for the first run of the game.  

Royal also used 2 pitchers, both of whom threw 2 innings a piece. Baron Rupp (2016; Charlotte, NC) struck out three batters in his 2 innings, topping at 84 mph with his fastball and sat 79-82 mph with the pitch. He also flashed a change up at 65 mph. 

Nick Fortunato (2015; Coram, NY) finished the game, working a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first. He ran his fastball up to 72 mph and showed a feel for a curveball at 58 mph and a change up at 68 mph, which he kept low in the zone.

Josh Hiatt, RHP, Charlotte, NC (2015) - Hiatt impressed at the plate and on the mound. He collected a hit in this game as well, but his performance on the mound truly stood out. He worked at 84-86 mph with his fastball and also mixed a 77 mph changeup.

Hansen Butler, RHP, High Point, NC (2014) - The UNC commit was as advertised for the Gold team, sitting at 86-89 mph with his fastball and commanding a sharp 73-77 mph curveball. Butler struck out five of the seven batters he faced.

Andrew Llewellyn, C, Moseley, VA (2014) - Showed a good approach at the plate, has a balanced swing and collected a hit on a day where hits came at a premium.

Also on the mound for Gold was Lane Kowalski, a lefty from Archdale, NC - he worked at 76-78 mph with his fastball and struck out three hitters in two innings.

Starting for Navy was Tyler Murphy, a 6-4 righty from Chesapeake, VA. He worked at 78-80 mph and struck out four batters in two innings. Lefty, Daniel McGehee from King William, VA followed him, working at 74-76 mph with his fastball and striking out three batters in the process. Addison Wood (Princeton, VA) closed it out for Navy, showing a 78-80 mph fastball and a 66 mph curveball.

The third game saw 3 hits by Columbia Blue and 5 hits by the Red team. 

Red had singles by Toby Buchanan (2015; Suffolk, VA), Tyler Smith (2016; Colonial Heights, VA), and Ryan Mitschele (2016; Cornelius, NC), with Mitschele coming around to score after a double that Cameron Locklear (2016; Fayetteville, NC) hit over the head of the left fielder, picking up his second RBI in as many games. Also doubling in his final at bat Derek Horton, who line the ball to the right center field gap. 

Collecting hits for Columbia Blue were Tanner Revis (2017; Candler, NC), Tyler Heinrichs (2015; Marietta, GA), and Jacob Dellicolli (2016; Charlotte, NC). Revis singled in the first and Heinrichs and Dellicolli picked up hits back-to-back in the second, with Dellicolli driving in Heinrichs for the only Columbia Blue run. 

The Red team started Michael Davis (2015; Lenoir, NC), a right handed pitcher who topped out at 84 mph with his fastball. He struck out 3 batters and showed a very nice feel for his curveball, which he worked 63-67 mph, flashing 11/5 break on the pitch. 

Ryan Mitschele (2016; Cornelius, NC), who also singled, sat 76-80 mph with his fastball, bumping it up to 81 mph. He struck out the side in his first inning of work and picked up another in his second, finishing with 4 strikeouts. He showed the ability to throw three pitches for strikes, mixing in an upper 60's curveball and a change up that sat 70-72 mph.

Steven Carpenter (2016; Quinton, VA), who made a very nice diving play at shortstop in his first game, started the first 2 innings, and struck out 2 batters and surrendered 2 hits. He bumped his fastball up to 83 mph and projects for more velocity in the near future. He also flashed a curveball at 69 mph. 

The final 2 innings went to Brett Shapcott (2015; Davidson, NC), a left hander who worked his fastball 74-77 mph and showed a feel for a 1/7 curveball at 64 mph.

Jon Rosoff, RHP, Durham, NC (2014) - After impressing on the other side of the ball, Rosoff stood out on the mound, living at 82-84 mph with his fastball and mixing an impressive 71 mph changeup.

Austin Green, RHP, Erwin, TN (2014) - Green worked at 78-82 mph with his fastball and flashed a 73-76 mph curveball. He struck out three batters in two innings.

Connor Simpson, RHP, Erwin, TN (2014) - Simpson showed two quality offerings in his two inning outing, mixing an 80-82 mph fastball and a sharp 70-72 mph curveball.

Andrew Holsten, LHP, Oak Hill, VA (2014) - Holsten pitched two dominant innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced. He worked at 73-75 mph with his fastball. 

Dontoyas Boyd, LHP, Huntersville, NC (2014) - Boyd worked a scoreless third inning, sitting at 75-77 mph with his fastball out of an easy delivery, and mixing a well spotted 67 mph curveball.

Blake Bivens, RHP, Sutherlin, VA (2014) - Bivens showed the best velocity of the day, working mostly at 86-91 mph with his fastball and mixing a sharp 11-5 curveball at 79 mph. He struck out 3 batters in 2 innings of work.

Logan Beehler, RHP, Charlotte, NC (2014) - Beehler displayed some of the weekend's best velocity, working at 86-88 mph and showing good life down in the zone. He struck out four batters in two innings.

Andrew Burgesser, RHP, Midland, NC (2014) - Burgesser struck out four batters in two innings, and did so by showing lively stuff. He worked at 80-83 mph and showed command of his 74 mph breaking ball.

Alex Boulware, LHP, Blythewood, SC (2014) - Boulware allowed just one hit in his 2 inning stint, sitting 80-83 mph with his fastball and mixing a 76-78 mph slider. He struck out 3 hitters in the process. 

Nick Harper, RHP, Chevy Chase, MD (2014) - Harper worked two scoreless innings, living at 78-84 mph with his fastball and showing a feel for a low 70s changeup. He struck out 3 batters and did not allow a hit.

Russell Olive, LHP, Chelmsford, MA (2015) - Olive worked at 77-79 mph with his fastball in his two inning outing. He did not allow a hit and struck out four batters in that span.

Conner Leonard, Winston-Salem, NC (2014) - In a game dominated by pitching, Leonard showed next level opposite field pop, driving a double to the right-center field gap.

Derek Perry, IF, Belmont, NC (2014) - After impressive in BP, Perry drove the ball hard to his pull side in game action, hitting a hard one hopper over the third base bag.

The Red offense was in a groove today, smacking out 7 singles in their first game of the day. Leading the way was Cameron Locklear (2016; Fayetteville, NC) who singled in both of his at bats, knocking in a run in his first at bat and scoring one himself in his second. Also picking up singles were Miles Moore (2015; Asheville, NC) who later scored, James Daddio (2015; North Chesterfield, VA), Derek Beale (2015; Cary, NC), Ashton King (2016, Christiansburg, VA) and Derek Horton (2015; Forest, VA) who knocked in a run in his final at bat. 

The pitching for Red held the Royal offense to 3 hits a piece. The first pitcher to throw was left hander Tyler Smith (2016; Colonial Heights, VA) who was able to miss bats, striking out three hitters in a row. He used his fastball, which sat 72-74 mph, effectively and mixed in a 69 mph curveball and a high 60's change up. 

Samuel Rexroad (2015; Leesburg, VA) is a projectable left handed pitcher that sat 81-82 mph with his fastball and had some run on the pitch. He struck out the side in his first inning of work, complementing his fastball with a high 60's/low 70's curveball which he showed a feel for. 

Justin Sorokowski (2016; Mechanicsville, VA) threw the last inning, bumping his fastball up to 85 mph with smooth, easy mechanics. He sat 82-84 mph on the fastball and flashed both a low 70's curveball and change up to strike out 2 batters. 

Matt Oldham (2017; Pittsboro, NC) picked up the first hit, a single in the first inning for Royal. The next 2 hits came in the final inning, both singles by Andrew Sargent (2016; Greenwood, SC) and Baron Rupp (2016; Charlotte, NC).

Royal used 4 different pitchers in the 6 innings of baseball. Miles Michnowicz (2015; Bala Cynwyd, PA) threw the first two innings, striking out 6 batters for all of his outs, showing a nice feel for a 3 pitch mix and the ability to miss bats. He got his fastball up to 83 mph, with a sharp curveball at 70 mph and a change up at 78 mph low in the zone.

Andrew Sargent, who also picked up a hit, threw the next 2 innings and sat 72-75 mph from the left side. He allowed only 1 hit and struck out 2 batters. 

Both Marcus Chan (2015; Charlotte, NC) and Jacob Wyandt (2016; Laurel, MD) threw an inning a piece. Chan, a right handed pitcher, struck out the side in order, throwing his fastball 78-81 mph and showed a nice feel for both curveball at 74 mph and a change up at 70. Wyandt touched 70 mph with his fastball, striking out the first batter he faced and showed a feel for an 11/5 curveball at 63 mph.

The first game of the Atlantic Coast Underclass Showcase set the pace for the rest of the event, as pitchers dominated, although there were hits scattered throughout the game. 

Pacing the offense for Orange was Nicholas Siragusa (2015; Shirley, NY), Austin Parsley (2016; Charlotte, NC), and Tanner Cain (2015; Chesnee, SC). All three batters collected a single a piece and Cain drove in the only run for Orange, with the ball jumping off his bat at 88 mph. 

Both Collin Maynard (2015; Anderson, SC) and Jackson Probst (2015; Gaffney, SC) pitched two innings a piece for Orange. Maynard topped out at 83 mph with his fastball, sitting 78-82 mph and flashed a curveball. He surrendered only 1 hit and struck out 1 batter. Probst had two 1-2-3 innings, working his fastball up to 80 mph with showing both a curveball and a change up. He struck out the last 3 batters that he faced. 

Brett Shapcott (2015; Davidson, NC) picked up the lone hit for Columbia Blue in his first at bat, a single and showed his speed off down the line. 

Thomas Chisam (2015; Williamsburg, VA) worked the first 2 innings for Columbia Blue and showed showed off his arm strength, bumping his fastball to 85 mph, working 82-84 mph with a 71 mph curveball and a mid-70's change up. 

Working the final two innings for Columbia Blue was Will Blair (2015; Greensboro, NC), a right handed pitcher that sat 75-76 mph with his fastball. He was able to strike out 2 batters and showed a feel for a nice, low 70's slider and a change up.

Derek Perry, INF/OF, Belmont, NC (2014)-Hits from a spread stance, shows good balance and produces torque with lower half. Hard line drive contact.

Eric Crain, OF/RHP, Richmond, VA (2014)-Left handed hitter who showed fast bat and hit hard line drives to all parts of the field.

Matthew Beaird, C, Johnson City, TN (2014)-Easy fluid swing that consistently barreled up the ball to the middle of the field. 

Kyle Wrighte, SS/2B, South Riding, VA (2014)-Took a solid round of BP, showing a quick bat and line drive contact to all fields.

Connor Leonard, 1B, Winston-Salem, NC (2014)-Strong, right handed batter who showed quick hands and the ability to lift the ball.

Aaron Rudisill, C, Newton, NC (2015)-Hits from a balanced set up and produced hard line drive contact with one of the hardest hit balls of the day.


Edward Reese, OF, Lexington, NC (2016)-Hits from an athletic stance, shows lift to pull side, and had a nice sound of the bat.

Ausar Rankin, C/OF, Statesville, NC (2015)-Showed big time bat speed, aggressive approach, with consistent rockets up the middle. 

Cameron Locklear, SS/2B, Fayetteville, NC (2016)-Lean right handed hitter with a quick bat and made consistent hard contact pull side.

Ashton King, OF/LHP, Christianburg, VA (2016)-Strong, right-handed batter showed hard line drive contact to the middle of the field with strength in swing.

Justin Sorokowski, RHP/3B, Mechanicsville, VA (2016)-Extra large frame with lift in swing and hard contact pull side and to middle of the field. 

Marcus Chan, OF/MIF, Charlotte, NC (2015)-Switch hitter with sound approach from each side. Smooth swing with lift resulting in line drive contact from left side. Wide, open base from right side, showing some strength in swing. 

Vincent Addona, SS, Cary, NC (2015)-Strong frame with a short, compact swing from left side. Quick bat with consistent, hard contact to all fields.

Secondary pitchers threw indoors due to rainy conditions on Saturday. Here are the the highlights of the pitchers who took the mound.

Eric Crain, OF/RHP, Richmond, VA (2014) - Athletic right-hander worked at 83-85 mph and flashed a sharp, late breaking 12-6 curveball at 69 mph.

Max Bazin, C/RHP, Charlotte, NC (2015) - Bazin worked mostly at 81-83 mph with his fastball, topping out at 84 and showing good, late life through the zone. He also commanded an 11-5 curveball at 69 mph. His most impressive pitch was his slider at 72 mph that showed late action.

Jacob Carte, OF/3B/RHP, Charlotte, NC (2014) - Showing a lively, fast arm, the 6-foot-1 right-hander worked at 84-86 mph, showing the best velocity of the day on the mound. He threw from a three-quarter arm slot and also mixed a sharp 11-5 curveball at 70 mph. He also mixed in a forkball and changeup.

Steven Carpenter, SS/RHP, Quinton, VA (2016) - Working from a high three-quarter arm slot, Carpenter lived at 81-83 mph, topping out at 84 mph and also mixed in a changeup and a breaking ball that showed late action.

Justin Sorokowski, RHP/3B, Mechanicsville, VA (2016) - Young right-hander has an athletic, projectable frame and worked at 80-84 mph with his fastball. Also mixed a knuckle curveball with sharp 12-6 action. Also mixed in a solid changeup.
