2014 World Showcase

2014 World Showcase, World Uncommitted, and National Underclass

Sunday, January 5
1/5/2014 3:10:08 PM

2016 SS John Callahan (Ashburn, VA) showed a smooth swing, taking advantage of a fastball-only situation, lacing a single into right center. As he matures physically he should begin to develop more strength to drive the ball, as he already shows the quality hand-eye coordination and underlying athleticism to make quality contact.

2016 C/RHP Jensen Lapoint (Kennebeunk, ME) hammered a ball that registered at 90 mph off the bat in his only trip to the plate. He would later take the mound for two innings of relief, running his fastball up to 82 mph and backing it with a 72 mph slider.

2015 C/3B Mike Rojas (Naples, FL) continued his hot hitting in the second half of the doubleheader, going 2-for-2 with a double. He finished the day 3-for-4 with four hard hit balls in as many at-bats to go with his impressive defensive work behind the plate.

2015 MIF/RHP Casey Selfie (McDonough, GA) had a big game on both sides of the ball. He crushed an RBI triple at the plate, and showed very good bat speed with power to the pullside. He also got the start on the mound and threw a pair of shutout innings, sitting 81-83 with his fastball and showing big depth on his 11-5 curveball.

1/5/2014 3:01:14 PM

Evan Mendoza (RHP - 2014 - Sarasota, FL) pitched well at 88-90 MPH with his fastball.  He showed a tight curveball at 76 MPH and a change up at 73 MPH.  Mendoza showed a clean delivery with the ability to repeat.  NC State commit.

Michael Mediavilla (LHP - 2014 - Hialeah, FL) pitched at 86-88 MPH with his fastball with good downhill action to it.  He also threw a curveball at 69 MPH and a change up at 77 MPH.  Big bodied LHP with more in there.

Alejandro Blanco (RHP - 2014 - Miami, FL) pitched at 82-86 MPH with his fastball from a deceptive low 3/4 arm slot.  He has good running action on his fastball and also threw a sweeping curveball at 68 MPH.

Jason Plyn (RHP - 2014 - Lake City, FL) pitched at 83-86 MPH.  He also threw a curveball at 71 MPH and a change up at 75 MPH.  Big bodied kid with more in there.

Keshawn Lynch (MIF - 2015 - Lake Hamilton, FL) showed very good defensive skills and athleticism on a few running plays in the game.  He's an early commit to UCF.

Nick Gordon, Nicholas Moore, Duke Stunkel Jr., Jordan Perkins, and Elijah Christenson each had extra base hits in the game.

1/5/2014 2:50:29 PM

2015 C/3B Mike Rojas (Naples, FL) stood out on both sides of the ball, as he not only cut down a would be-basestealer with an impressive throw from behind the plate, his fourth inning triple was also one of the biggest offensive highlights of the day. Rojas sent a fly ball deep to the right center field fence on one hop on a ball that he didn't get all of in his second at bat, after hitting the ball hard his first time up in spite of finding the defense.

2015 3B/OF Brandon Bell (Fayetteville, GA) made hard contact in each of his two trips to the plate as well. He hit balls that registered at 84 and 88 mph off the bat respectively, and posted a solid 4.82 turn time at first following his first inning single.

There were multiple candidates for defensive play of the game. 2016 MIF Gary Mattis (Davie, FL) had a diving stop to his left to rob a hit while playing second base, getting to his feet in time to complete the play. That play was nearly overshadowed by the diving attempt in center field by 2015 IF/OF John Cunningham (Port St. Lucie, FL) who broke from straight away center field and laid out at full extension to snag a surefire double on a ball in straight away left field (that the left fielder overran). Cunningham lost the ball as he hit the ground, but the range he showed and the effort to pursue a ball that was not technically within the centerfielder's jurisdiction were both impressive.

Mattis would also pick up a single in his only at-bat, giving him a 2-for-3 finish to the day's doubleheader.

2015 MIF Trent Bryan (Miami, FL) started the day off by showing off his speed, making it to 2B by the time his high flyball landed for an out (something that scouts do in fact pay attention to). He would then triple to left in the fourth inning before coming around to score.

Switch hitting 2015 OF/LHP Jason Aponte (Loxahachee, FL) went 2-for-2 with an RBI double for the Black team, collecting one hit from each side of the plate, after closing out the previous game with two shutout innings and running his fastball up to 79 mph.

1/5/2014 2:34:31 PM

2016 MIF Gary Mattis (Davie, FL) had an impressive at-bat his first trip to the plate, one that spanned the first and second innings. After getting hit with a picth with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Mattis insisted that he was fine to continue his at-bat, but he was switched out with the next hitter, who then made the final out of the inning. Mattis then led off the second by taking out his frustration on the pitcher, crushing a line drive into left field for a single for the Black team's only hit of the game, before stealing both second and third base and then coming around to score their only run. Mattis also showed good athleticism to his defensive actions in the middle infield.

2015 RHP/3B Austin Blakeley (Hallsville, TX) threw well as the starting pitcher for the Kelly Green team. He struck out eight of the 11 hitters he faced, allowing one run on one hit while sitting 82-86 with his fastball. He backed his fastball with a 71 mph curveball and 78 mph slider. His slider showed sharp break and was highly effective in this outing, while his fastball showed good sinking life.

2016 C Ryan Hernandez (Pinecrest, FL) stood out for his defensive ability behind the plate. He has quick lateral actions and is an active receiver who blocks well and has begun to develop his pitch framing and receiving skills. His catch and throw mechanics are sound and compact and one of his between innings throwdowns registered at 79 mph.

1/5/2014 2:20:22 PM

1/5/2014 1:49:03 PM

Walker Powell (2015, RHP/3B/1B, Fayetteville East, Fayetteville, AR) Has a good pitchers build listed at 6'6'' with room to fill out. He pitched 3 innings, giving up only 1 hit and striking out 3. He is raw mechanically, but showed a loose easy arm action with more velocity to come. 1/5/2014 11:49:53 AM

Nolan also added two hits out of his three at bats on the day.

Glenn Roberts topped out at 82mph on his fastball, showing good extension and arm side run. Roberts also displayed good feel for his curveball in his three innings.

Caedon Saltis (2014, RHP/C/3B, Sarasota, FL) showed a loose repeatable arm action running his fastball up to 81mph with a tight 10/4 slider at 75mph.

Jordan Shaffer (2014, SS/RHP, Benton, LA) was running his fastball up to 86mph with an over the top arm slot.  Shaffer has a quick arm and gets on top of the ball creating good downhill plane and flashed a strong feel for his 11/5 curveball and a fading change up.   Jordan also picked up two hits in the box.

Saturday, January 4
1/6/2014 4:35:23 AM

SS Bruce Steel (2014/Jupiter, FL) hits from a spread stance with a further stride out front but does a good job of staying balanced and timing the ball.  He has strong, quick hands and makes hard pull line drive contact with gap power.

SS Alex O'Donnell (2014/Lockport, NY) has an aggressive approach at the plate and produces good bat speed with a long and loose swing with nice extension out front.

OF Alex Aristy (2014/Loxahatchee, FL) has a pull oriented approach and is looking to hit the ball out front and drive it hard to left field.  He has the bat speed, strength and lift in his swing to hit plenty of home runs at the next level.

OF Duke Stunkel (2014/Palm Beach Gardens, FL) has always been an interesting prospect due to his 6-4/215 build and his loose left handed swing.  He took a nice BP and showed his pull power and ability to lift the ball.

1B Elijah Christenson (2014/Haslet, TX) is always one of the stronger players at any events he attends with a country strong 6-4/225 build but he does a good job of keep his swing short and quick to the ball while showing the ability to drive it hard to all fields, especially the left centerfield gap.

SS Alexis Pantojas (2014/Vega Alta, PR) is better known for his top level defensive tools but its his development on offense that has driven his rise through the prospect ranks.  He has a slashing left handed swing that produced consistent hard line drives from gap to gap that show more strength than his 6-0/150 would indicate.

SS Nelson Jorge Pagan (2014/Patillas, PR) stands out because he is a rare switch-hitter who grades out almost equally from both sides of the plate at a prospect level.  If anything, his left handed swing has a bit more quickness and power to it but he can drive the ball right handed as well.

OF Felix Javier Hernandez Mercado (2014/Naranjito, PR) has a long and strong swing at 6-3/190 and doesn't always square the ball up but when he does he gets lift and big jump off the barrel.  He really projects power in the future.

SS Juan Javier Echevarria (2015/Puerto Rico) has likely already outgrown shortstop with his current 6-3/200 build but may end up being the top hitter in the 2015 class from Puerto Rico.  He has tons of present bat speed and power.

C Roy Morales Rivera (2014/Lares, PR) is extra strong and shows his power potential and strength at every event he attends.  He blasted one of the few batting practice home runs of the day at the huge Stadium Field at Terry Park.

1/5/2014 5:24:57 PM

SS Nicholas Shumpert (2015/Lone Tree, CO) has continued to simplify and shorten his swing without losing any bat speed.  It gives him more flexibility and versatility in his swing against different pitches in different locations, although results always seem to be hard line drives to the pull side.

OF Tristan Rojas (2014/Bronx, NY) provided the single most noteworthy swing of batting practice when he blasted a ball off the backstop of Mack Field way beyond the left field fence.  Rojas has always shown a quick bat and advanced barrel to ball skills but that kind of power is new for him.

OF Aidan McDermott (2014/South Plainfield, NJ) hasn't got much national attention and is signed with St. John's but that could change over the next six months.  He has big power from his 6-3/200 frame and right handed swing and has the present ability to drive the ball hard to all fields.

2B/SS Isan Diaz (2014/Springfield, MA) was one of many standouts from the Northeast and has shown both power potential and high average barrel skills as a left handed hitting middle infielder.  Perfect Game's Jeff Dahn profiled Diaz and his background in this article on the PG website:  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9266

OF Brandon Vicens (2014/Miami Lakes, FL) is a strength based hitter who just overpowers the ball from the right side.  He's aggressive, short to the ball and has lots of lift in his pull oriented swing.  He's going to hit now and at the next level.

C Nathan Rodriguez (2014/Yorba Linda, CA) is under the radar on the national stage after missing substantial time due to an ACL injury but he's healthy now and showing it.  He has the typical SoCal shift into contact, swings hard and has very good bat speed and power potential.

SS Nicholas Gordon (2014/Windermere, FL) has added noticeable strength to his shoulders and upper back in the past couple months and the results were obvious in batting practice in the way the ball come off his barrel.

C Michael Arroyo (2014/Ponce, PR) has a strong fundamental swing and the strength to drive the ball all over his field.  His strong BP performance can help overcome the pain of being hit 4-5 times by pitches during the showcase games, where he resembled a human target for pitchers, it seemed.

OF Roberto Gonzalez (2014/Orlando, FL) has big strength in his left handed swing from a simple swing approach.  He's a high ceiling hitter with plus raw athletic ability.

OF Khevin Brewer (2014/Richmond, TX) looks like he's made some nice adjustments to his swing and path to the ball to get shorter and square up more consistently.  He is so strong that he doesn't have to worry about how the ball is going to come off the barrel.

1/5/2014 4:26:13 PM

C Spencer Levine (2014/Miami, FL) is one of the stronger players in the 2014 class rankings and showed it during batting practice.  He has good hand quickness to get the barrel started and lots of lift in his right handed swing to produce power.

SS Dave Hollins (2014, Orchard Park, NY) is the son of the former big leaguer of the same name and has high level talent of his own.  He has a short, quick swing from a spread/no stride approach and the strength to drive the ball to the gaps.

1B Samuel Martin (2014/Tampa, FL) still has some filling out to do but has a smooth, fundamentally sound swing from the left side that squared the ball up consistently.

OF Stuart Fairchild (2014/Seattle, WA) traveled as far as any player at the event to get to Fort Myers, Florida and had a strong event.  He has a calm, well balanced right handed swing and hit the ball hard frequently up the left centerfield gap in batting practice.

SS Luke Belt (2014/Vienna, VA) is an example of a player who probably has a bit too long a stride into contact but keeps it under control and balanced well enough to help his generate very good bat speed while still timing pitches and making consistent hard contact.

OF Keegan McGovern (2014/Willacoochee, GA) looks like a hitter at 6-3/195  and definitely has the strength to stand out.  He drove the ball very hard from the left side and would have left spacious Terry Park a couple of times in better weather conditions.  He especially stood out for his ability to hit the ball deep in the zone and still pull it with lift and authority.

OF Nkosi Djehuti-Mes (2014/ Oakland, CA) was a last minute addition to the showcase and traveled all the way across country for the opportunity, but it was a well spent effort.  He lifted one of the few home runs hit during BP and showed a long, smooth and powerful swing from the right side.

OF Bradley Ramon (2014/Miami, FL) will need to develop some more flow and rhythm to his swing but few hitters showed more raw strength than the South Florida right handed hitter.

OF Ryan Vega Caballero (2014/Manati, PR) has a long and loose swing and lots of strength from a solid 6-2/190 build.  He swings hard and is looking to drive the ball.

1/5/2014 4:08:04 PM

SS Manny Rodriguez (2014/Baltimore, MD):  Rodriguez is a quick twitch athlete who uses his hands very well at the plate.  He consistently drove the ball hard to the left centerfield gap.

C Trevor "TJ" Martin (2014/Overland Park, KS):  Martin has lots of strength in his 6-0/200 build and he uses it to create very good bat speed from the right side.  He stays short and quick to the ball but has the ability to lift the ball with good extension out front.

OF Todd Isaacs (2014/Delray Beach, FL):  Isaacs is a speed player who ran a 6.34 sixty but he showed nice polish and self awareness in his approach at the plate.  He has lots of room to get stronger but has quick hands and consistently drives the ball hard to the middle of the field instead of trying to do too much with it.

C Seth Wall (2014, Georgetown, SC):  Wall has a very simple, high average swing approach and the quick hands and strength to repeat it consistently.  He peppered hard line drives all over the field.

OF Kevin Williams (2014, Miramar, FL):  Williams hit very well in the games, which wasn't surprising after his batting practice that produced consistent hard line drive contact.  He has the strength and bat speed to continue to develop offensively with some approach adjustments.

1B Dash Winningham (2014/Ocala, FL):  Winningham is big and strong at 6-2/220 and has tons of bat speed from the left side.  He's definitely looking to hit the ball as hard and as far as he can with every pitch and usually does so successfully.

C Tyler Martin (2014/Acworth, GA):  Martin has a similar approach and overall build as Seth Wall (above) with a bit more bat speed from a low hand approach that gives him a bit more lift in his swing.  The most important thing about both their swings is they are short, quick and simple; that's a good recipe for consistent high average line drive contact.

SS Kevin Rivera (2014/Barceloneta, PR):  Rivera is a legit switch-hitter with bat speed and a balanced approach from both sides of the plate.  His right handed swing is a bit looser and more natural with a tick more bat speed.

OF Michael Reid (2014/Detroit, MI):  Reid has a slender 6-4/185 build but still generates lots of bat speed from an aggressive uppercut swing that drives the ball hard to all fields.  He projects nicely as he gets stronger.

SS  Andres David Ramos Rivera (2014/Bayamon, PR):  Rivera has lots of room to add strength to his 6-2/180 frame, which is just going to add bat speed to his very smooth and calm swing.  He drove the ball hard to both gaps from the right side.

1/4/2014 10:13:43 PM
