Top Prospect Game- Team 5 vs Team 6 Highlights >>

12/30/2012 4:34:52 PM

The star studded top prospect game had plenty of talent to go around, below is a small sample of the players who performed well in a limited sample size against other high caliber players.

-2015 C/RHP Kyle Davis (Brewton, AL) has big shoes to fill being the younger brother of PG All-American Kevin Davis, but based on his outing today, he may have a chance to fill them. Davis worked a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a pair while sitting 82-85 mph with his fastball. He has similar mechanics to his brother, but with a larger frame and has the same sharp downhill plane.

-2014 RHP Erin Baldwin (Lake Charles, LA) was very promising, the tall slender right hander worked 81-84 with a long loose arm action. He uses his length well, creating a severe downhill plane to impart sink on the ball. He projects for increased velocity, and likely has more present firmness to his heating in conditions more optimal than the windy mid 40s late December day.

-2014 3B Calvin Scott III (Newark, DE) had the lone hit for Team 6, hammering a ball that registered at 89 mph off the bat in the sixth inning, before following the hit up with a stolen  base.

-2014 OF/RHP Cory Crow (Deland, FL) showed well on the mound in his one inning appearance, working 80-83 with a good downhill plane and a quality 72 mph 12-6 curveball with good spin rate to create bite. He clearly is capable of producing higher velocity but was throwing on short rest in adverse weather conditions, and was equally as promising if not more so with the bat.

-2014 OF Micah Jefferies-Harris (Union, NJ) drove in the lone run of the game for Team 5, plating 2014 MIF Nic Strasser (Orlando, FL) with a single to left in the fifth, and showed good baserunning instincts taking second on the throw to the plate. Ultimately, he would be stranded 90 feet away while representing the tying run.

-2014 SS Slade Dale (Ringgold, GA) did his part to start a rally for Team 5 in their comeback attempt, leading off the bottom of the 6th with a double and then stole third, but he too would be stranded 90 feet away while representing the tying run.

Nick Gordon (2014, Windermere, FL) Had his fastball sitting 88-89mph and touched 91mph with his curveball at 75mph.  Gordon throws from a 3/4 arm slot, with an arm that works well, and a outstanding curveball.

Logan Ashworth (2014, Port Neches, TX) Had his fastball sitting 82-84mph topping out at 86mph with his curveball at 70mph and slider at 76mph.  Ashworth throws from a 3/4 arm slot, has life on his fastball with good command of it.  His curveball had 11/5 break.

Ray Hutchinson (2014, Holden, LA) Had his fastball sitting at 84-86mph with his slider at 72mph.  Hutchinson throws from a low 3/4 arm lot, with arm side run on his fastball.

Juan Hillman (2015, Haines City, FL) Had his fastball sitting 83-84mph with his curvebll at 71mph.  Juan throws from a 3/4 arm slot, locates his pitches well, and the ball comes out easy with minimal effort.

Blake Hamilton (2014, Ringgold, GA) Hamilton had his fastball 82-83mph with his slider at 76mph.  Hamilton has a large projectable frame, throws from the 3/4 arm slot, and mixes in his off speed well.

Kyle Kemp (2014, Port Charlotte, FL) Had his fastball sitting 83-85mph.  Kemp throws from a low 3/4 arm slot, with a good arm action, has an arm that works well, and his fastball had arm side run.

Ethan Walker (2014, Spanish Fort, AL) Walker had his fastball 82-85mph topping at 86mph with his curveball sitting at 68mph and slider sitting at 73mph.  Walker throws from a high 3/4 arm slot, has a good arm action, has a arm that works.  Curveball had a 12/6 break.

Max Wotell (2015, Marvin, NC) Wotell had his fastball sitting 84-86mph topping out at 87mph with his curveball at 69mph and his slider at 74mph.  Max throws from the low 3/4 arm slot with a good arm action, a very live arm, and 2/8 break on his curveball.

David Villar (2015, Pembroke Pines, FL) Villar had a good showing today at the plate going 2-2.  David was squaring up the ball well and showed good bat speed while doing so.  David also showed a level swing plane and stayed inside the ball.

Jonathan India (2015, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the pop in his bat with a double.  India has good bat speed with a line drive swing plane.

Saturday Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 4 >>

12/30/2012 12:48:50 PM

OF Satchel McElroy (14-Columbia Blue/2015, League City, TX) looks very similar to his older brother, C.J., a third round pick of the Cardinals in 2011.  He's extremely fast with 6.5 speed already.  He has a simple and sound right handed swing and consistently squares the ball up to the middle of the field.  McElroy is the son of former MLB LHP Chuck McElroy.

OF Drew Wharton (14-Columbia Blue/2014, Suwanee, GA) has a nice calm approach and swing, especially for a big 6-3/185 athlete who really projects physically.  He has good present bat speed and could really develop as he gets stronger.

OF Alex Aristy (19-Red/2014, Loxahatchee, FL) took one of the more interesting BP's of the event.  His first 4-5 swings were pretty uninspiring to evaluate, with some length and not much bat speed.  Then BANG!, a shot over the left field fence that got out in a hurry, followed by some hard line drives and another bomb with big bat speed.  It looked like it took him a couple of pitches to get comfortable and ready and when that happened, Aristy was ready to show his tools.  He also ran a 6.5 60 and hit a game home run as well, so expect to see his name high on the post event Top Prospect lists.

3B Benard Gilot (19-Red/2016, Apopka, FL) had almost the same build and swing as another 2016 prospect from a previous blog, OF Denilson Elligson.  He has a short, quick swing with good strength for his age and will take a positive step forward as a hitter with some more separation in his swing.

OF Zach Featherstone (21-Royal/2014, Charlotte, NC) is an extra strong 6-2/205 left handed hitter who really explodes his hands to the ball well while stay short and direct.  The ball really came off the barrel hard and he has the type of hitting approach that works very well the better the pitching gets.

OF Gilbert Peralta (21-Royal/2014, Wilmington, DE) looked like he really saw the ball well at the plate, consistently squaring the ball up well from a calm, rock in hitting approach with very good right handed bat speed.

3B Carson Jackson (21-Royal/2014, West Melbourne, FL) was one of the most interesting overall athletes at the showcase and is someone the PG scouts will have to continue to bear down on in game action.  He's present strong at 6-0/192 and runs a 6.65 while throwing 85 mph across the infield.  Jackson showed big power potential in BP and drove some balls very hard with an aggressive uppercut swing but we suspect his BP swing approach and his game approach are different.

Saturday Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 3 >>

12/30/2012 12:26:22 PM

The 3-Black and 4-Royal were also prospect laden teams, made up primarily of players from the Marucci Baseball and FTB programs, respectively.

C Handsome Monica (3-Black/2014, Mandeville, LA) has been coming to PG events since he was in 8th grade.  He's grown into an exceptionally strong 6-2/210 right handed hitter with very good bat speed and huge power potential.

OF Denilson Elligson (3-Black/2016, Graceville, FL) is going to be an interesting player to watch develop.  He's only a freshman but ran a 6.81 and threw 90 mph from the outfield.  He has very quick hands at the plate with some present bat speed when he gets the barrel out and his hands separated from his body.

SS Christopher Reid (3-Black/2015, Baton Rouge, LA) is listed at 5-10/155 but is very strong for his age and size.  He has present bat speed and quick hands from the left side of the plate and can hit the ball hard from gap to gap.  Reid has a very mature approach and we imagine he is a very high average hitter with developing power.

SS Michael Campoamor (4-Royal/2014, Wesley Chapel, FL), like Reid, is much stronger than his 5-11/165 frame would indicate.  He has very good bat speed with a loose, extended finish out front that will help him hit for power in the future.

OF Keith Williams (4-Royal/2014, Miramar, FL) swings the bat hard and creates nice bat speed from the right side.  The ball jumps hard off his barrel and his short path to the ball should make him able to square up consistently against better velocity stuff.

1B Christian Bailey (4-Royal/2014, Kingsport, TN) is listed at 6-5/175 but is well proportioned and coordinated for his age and size and projects very well.  He kept his swing short and loose and showed gap to gap power now that really could develop in the future.

OF Bryan Scheker (4-Royal/2015, Clermont, FL) had one of the most impressive physical builds at the showcase, with a sculpted 6-3/185 frame.  He has very simple present swing mechanics now that emphasize being short and efficient to the ball but could really see his power explode with a bit more weight shift through contact.

Saturday Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 2 >>

12/30/2012 12:09:09 PM

The 1-Purple team was made up of players from the Orlando Scorpions organization, so there were plenty of top prospects and early Division I commitments in the line up.  The most impressive hitter was 2015 SS Brendan Rodgers, one of top prospects in the early Class of 2015 rankings.  Rodgers has a loose and projectable 6-0/170 build and is much stronger than he looks.  He showed plus right handed bat speed already and big power potential while really moving into the ball well with his lower half.  It's easy to see him as a 6-2/190 athlete with the ability hit the ball out of the park to every field.

C Jonah Girand (2014, Maitland, FL) has been to numerous PG events and is well known for his defensive ability.  He took the best BP he's taken at any of those events on Saturday, showing improved bat speed and really squaring the ball up well.  He can still get off his back side a bit better but the improvement was notable.

SS Ramon Alejo (2015, Orlando, FL) already has a verbal commitment to Mississippi and while he isn't very strong yet, he has very quick hands at the plate and stays short and direct to the ball.

OF Billy Cooke (2014, Maitland, FL) has a verbal commitment to Coastal Carolina and showed a hard, aggressive right handed swing with strong hands at the ball that led to solid line drive contact.  Both Cooke and Alejo have very good present run and throw tools for their age as well.

3B Mijon Cummings (2014, Lutz, FL) is the son of former MLB outfielder Midre Cummings.  He has a strong and compact 5-11/185 build and has made some noticeable improvements in his swing and overall bat speed.  He swings hard and the ball comes off the barrel hard with some gap type power.
Top Prospect Game from Field 5 >>

12/30/2012 10:58:28 AM

Fletcher Simmons (2015, Gainesville, FL) had his fastball sitting at 81-83mph and his curveball at 71mph this morning. Simmons throws from a 3/4 arm slot, with a short arm action, is aggressive with his fastball, has 11-5 break on his curveball that has late break, and is confident on the mound.

Timothy Salvadore (2015, Hopkinton, MA) had his fastball sitting at 81-84mph with it topping out at 85mph with his changeup at 76mph. Salvadore throws from a 3/4 arm slot, has a short quick arm action, fields his position well, pitches with a good tempo, has a good changeup with arm side run.

Richard Cruz (2015, Miami Lakes, FL) had his fastball sitting at 79-81mph with it topping at 82mph with his curveball at 73mph. Cruz throws from a high 3/4 arm slot, has a long arm action, throws easy, is aggressive with his fastball, his curveball has 11-5 break to it with depth.

Thomas Byelick (2014, Snellville, GA) had his fastball sitting at 80-83mph with his curveball at 68mph this morning. Byelick has a 3/4 arm slot, with a short arm action, arm side run on his fastball, is aggressive with his fastball and pitches with a good tempo on the mound.

Zane Gill (2015, Pensacola Beach, FL) had his fastball sitting at 80-83mph with it topping out at 84mph with his curveball at 73mph and his changeup at 78mph. Gill throws from a 3/4 arm slot, is confident on the mound, locates his fastball, is calm in the stretch and has 11-5 break on his curveball.

Isiah Gilliam (2015, Lilburn, GA) had a good showing at the plate this morning for his team today. Gilliam had a double in the 1st inning showing off the pop in his bat and the bat speed he has.

Daino Deas (2015, Lilburn, GA) also had a good showing today for his team. Deas has good speed on the bases is quick down the line and has a contact approach at the plate.

Jason King (2015, Baltimore, MD) had a good day at the plate this morning. King has a good swing, makes solid line drive contact, and has good instincts on the bases.

Kyle Bowes (2015, Nutley, NJ) also had a good day at the plate with 2 hits in the game. Bowes has a good swing and makes consistent contact at the plate.
Saturday Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 1 >>

12/30/2012 10:42:16 AM

One of the most interesting things about watching the 7-Kelly Green team take batting practice was that there were a couple of young pitchers from Clements HS in Sugar Land, Texas, 2014 LHP Ryan Manz and 2014 RHP Will Peters, who had really, really good basic hitting mechanics.  They weren't strong enough yet (both being in the 6-3/165 area) to create real bat speed but they've been very well coached as hitters.  When watching over 400 players take BP in a 26 hour period, it's nice to see such sound fundamental swing mechanics even if it is on a primary pitcher.

3B Nicholas Moore (7-Kelly Green/2014, Plano, TX) and OF Lincoln Hewitt (7-Kelly Green/2014, Gainesville, GA) on that same team each had very good raw bat speed, especially the 6-3/195 Moore and graded out well.  But if either had Manz or Peter's swing mechanics, they would have graded out a grade higher at least.

C Christian Hernandez (7-Kelly Green/2014, Doral, FL) hit the only home run in BP hit by a left handed hitter.  Picture Fenway Park and Pesky's Pole at about 300 feet, but then imagine how quickly the fence goes out to 380 feet.  There were plenty of deep balls hit to right field among the 400 players, but only Hernandez placed his just right down the line.  He also hit a couple that just missed and showed big pull power overall.

C Gianpaul Gonzalez (8-Teal/2014, Cranberry, PA) has a very strong build but long arms for his listed 5-11/190 build and a nice loose swing with power and bat speed.

SS Nick Perez (8-Teal/2015, Lebanon, NJ) is an example of a young player who may not benefit from being a switch-hitter, at least based on a short look.  He showed very good bat speed from the right side while consistently squaring the ball up with some lift.  He had a completely different swing and 2 grades less bat speed from the left side.

We've seen C Willie Burger (11-Dark Green/2014, Maytown, PA) play frequently over the past few years and this might have been the best he's ever looked.  He's lost weight and firmed up his lower half impressively and it showed in his balance and approach at the plate.  He crushed the ball in BP and showed plus power and raw bat speed.

1B Josh Heller (11-Dark Green/2014, Houston, TX) had a very interesting BP.  He has an angular 6-4/205 build and showed an uppercut, pull and lift approach that resulted in hitting 6 balls off the Green Monster while really squaring the ball up well.  It will be very instructive to look at the game notes to see if he had the same approach against live pitching but there is no mistaking his power potential.

C Simeon Lucas (12-Steel/2014, Ingleside, IL) has an early commitment to Illinois State and it's easy to see why.  The 6-2/190 left handed hitter has present strength and bat speed and a really nice swing to watch. He hit two balls that were approximately 400+ feet during his session.  We can see him getting plenty of professional scouting attention by his senior year if his defensive tools measure up to his offensive potential.

Lucas wasn't the only big slugger on the 12-Steel team.  3B Julian Infante (2015, Coral Gables, FL) and 1B Elijah Christenson (2014, Haslet, TX) are both big and strong 6-3 right handed hitters with huge strength for their ages and big power potential.  Christenson looks like he could go wrestle steers back in Texas (Haslet is a northern suburb of Fort Worth).

Texas Orange Batting Practice >>

12/29/2012 7:13:32 PM

The East Cobb program has historically sent many of their best players to the National Underclass Showcase.  Watching Jason Heyward as a 15 year old hit for the first time at Clemente Field at Terry Park in 2004 still sticks in my mind and the list of players since is pretty impressive.

East Cobb has two teams worth of players here, the 2-Texas Orange (East Cobb Astros) and 13-Texas Orange (East Cobb Braves) and they have added to the history of the top performances at the National Underclass.

Two players specifically stood out and will go into Perfect Game lore.  Both, of course, are familiar to fans and scouts.

#1 ranked 2015 OF Dazmon Cameron (McDonough, GA) was simply outstanding and showed strength, bat speed and swing maturity well beyond his years.  He's continued to get stronger as he gets older (remember, he's still a sophomore) and that has translated to superior bat speed.  Most impressive, though, was his command of his swing mechanics and timing.  Cameron hit under control and just peppered the Green Monster with hard line drives.  One veteran PG staffer commented afterwards that it looked like a veteran big leaguer taking a serious BP.

But it would be hard to compare Cameron to his year older fellow outfielder Kel Johnson (Palmetto, GA).  After 20 teams had taken BP and hit 5-6 balls out of jetBlue/Fenway South Park in total, Johnson hit 7 (Seven) balls out in one round, including a couple of balls out from left center to left center that were easy 430-450 foot bombs.  I was at Fenway Park for the All-Star Game in 1999 when Mark McGwire put on his home run show.  Speaking without too much hyperbole, Johnson pretty much was doing the same thing.  The ball looked like a golf ball coming off a 7-iron.  Like many long limbed power hitters, Johnson has some swing complications and length, but his raw power is off the scale.

Other Texas Orange/East Cobb BP Highlights:

3B Michael Chavis (2014/Marietta, GA):  Chavis has established his hitting credentials after being perhaps the most dominant hitter on the summer WWBA/BCS circuit.  He has big bat speed and the ability to square up top level pitching with power.

IF Trey Harris (2014/Powder Springs, GA):  Low effort hitters who hit the ball hard with good balance and loose extension out front are going to hit at the next levels of baseball.  Harris does that.

C Joey Bart (2015/Buford, GA):  Bart is absurdly strong for his age at 6-2/210 but his has simple and efficient swing mechanics and hits within himself.  It's very worth noting at this point that this is a characteristic of East Cobb hitters; they hit with their strength and mechanics and don't go outside their envelope even in batting practice.  When you are as strong as Bart is, the ball is going to jump and he squared up almost every pitch.

3B Blake Jackson (2014, Warner Robbins, GA):  Jackson has lots of strength projection in his young 6-0/170 build but already has impressive raw bat speed.  The U. Georgia commit looks to hit the ball hard with an aggressive approach and does consistently.

OF Dominique Jackson (2014/Duluth, GA):  Jackson has a very loose and projectable build that looks to be 6-2/170.  He's not as consistent as some of the other EC hitters but when he stays above the ball he really drives it.

Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 3 >>

12/29/2012 8:00:07 PM

C Zach Ledbetter (22-Navy/2014, Stockbridge, GA):  Ledbetter gets loaded very well and has an aggressive approach that works very well against game competition as well.   He has nice strength and bat speed and squares up the ball well to the pull side.

OF Zacrey Law (23-White/2014, Robinson, TX):  Law looks bigger than his listed 5-8/170 size and has the strength to make the ball jump and carry.  He's best when he's not trying to stay inside the ball to much and is getting the barrel out and looking to drive the ball.

SS Bruce Steel (24-Dark Green/2014, Jupiter, FL):  The 6-1/165 Steel has all the ingredients in place to keep improving as a hitter, which is what you want to see at an Underclass event.  He's long and loose with lots of projection but has present bat speed and a well balanced and calm swing approach.

SS Chris Bec (24-Dark Green/2014, Miami, FL):  Bec's short swing path to the ball stood out and he's able to create bat speed at the same time.  The ball jumps off his bat very well.

OF Bradley Ramon (24-Dark Green/2014, Miami, FL):  Ramon and Bec are junior teammates at Ferguson HS and are a formidable middle of the order high school combination.  Ramon has some effort and length to his approach but he has unmistakeable raw power and bat speed.

3B Mason McClellan (25-Steel/2014, McDonough, GA):  The 6-3/185 McClellan has a big coil and load and uses his lower body very well to help generate bat speed.  He's a bit long to the ball but has serious lift and pull power in his swing, with lots of looseness out front and strong hands at the ball.

SS L.J. Talley (26-Orange/2015, Folkston, GA):  Talley has shown one of the more impressive left handed swings at the event.  He's still a sophomore but is strong enough to drive the ball hard and he stays on the ball a long time in a swing.  He consistently pull the ball hard and projects power when he learns to lift the ball a bit more.

OF Darius Hill (26-Orange/2015, Plano, TX):  Hill didn't have the present strength that the similarly sized Talley has but his swing was pretty much just as smooth and he consistently squared the ball up well.  He projects very well and needs to be closely followed.
1- Purple vs 12- Steel >>

12/28/2012 7:26:01 PM

The late afternoon time slot on Field 4 was highlighted not only by several high profile position prospects on the Purple roster, but it was the quality of arms that stole the show.

-2015 RHP Julian Infante (Coral Gables, FL) faced one over the minimum (reached via error) in his three innings of work, striking out five. The 6-foot-3, 194 pounder sat 84-86 for most of his outing, touching 88 several times. His curveball sat between 68-70 with good spin and break and 11-5 shape. While he has some strides to make with consistency, he spotted up his fastball frequently and had a dominant outing against a very strong Purple lineup that is comprised of players from the Orlando Scorpions organization.

-Infante came on in relief for the Steel team, and he had a tough act to follow coming in after starter 2016 RHP Ethan Routzahn (Crystal Lake, IL). Routzahn touched 85 mph during the warmup, and though he wasn't able to maintain that impressive velocity, he did show a lot of promise while working in the 81-83 range early on. Still a freshman, Ethan is already 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds and with massive feet, it appears that he isn't done growing either. He got hit by high level prospects from two classes ahead of him in age, but he showed the PG scouts the ability that you look for in a player his age and we look forward to following his development over the next few years. His best inning of work came in the third when he struck out the side.

-It would be easy to overlook the solid outing by 2014 RHP Alex Moradian (Winter Springs, FL) because of the pitching performance by the Steel hurlers, but Moradian allowed just two hits over four shutout innings and topped out at 84 mph. He supplemented his fastball with a 69 mph 12-6 curveball and 71 mph changeup. He was relieved by 2014 RHP/MIF Christian Hammond (Ft. Myers, FL) who was up to 82 and also showed well at the plate with an RBI double and a run scored in the fourth inning.

-While pitching was the story of the game, perhaps the top prospect on the field was 2015 MIF Brendon Rodgers (Longwood, FL). In his first trip to the plate Rodgers got a hanging breaking ball and teed off, crushing it off the top of the fence in left field. It was a shot that would have left the yard (with MLB dimensions) on a warmer day. He would have to settle for an RBI double, before coming around to score on a ball that squirted a few feet away from the catcher, making a good read to score safely from 3B on a ball that most players wouldn't have attempted to advance on.

-2014 C Jose Lopez (Tampa, FL) was impressive behind the plate for the Purple team, showing good lateral agility and quick feet with some feel for receiving already. He posted a sub 2.0 pop in the workout and has solid present arm strength with more to come. He didn't show much in the box score but he showed some offensive tools as well.

-2014 OF Shelton Schimming (DeLand, FL) lined a ball back up the box that registered at 89 mph off the bat for an RBI single in his first at bat of the game. He followed that up by stealing second.

-2015 SS/OF Alonzo Jones (Columbus, GA) didn't fill up the boxscore but he really stood out to the PG scouts. He lifted a ball to the right center gap in his first at bat that was well struck but hung up thanks to the backspin he put on the ball and went for a flyout thanks to a good read and jump by the CF. As he adds strength and the ball begins to travel further off the bat that ability to backspin the ball will be important and to be able to do it at a young age is a promising sign. Perhaps more impressively, Jones showed very good range attempting to chase down a ball in the Bermuda Triangle behind third base coming over from shortstop, he's a very good young athlete who has interesting defensive tools as well.
Batting Practice Highlights -- Part 2 >>

12/28/2012 6:02:40 PM

Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has one of the best known and most successful programs in the country, with Mets 2012 first round pick Gavin Cecchini being their most recent notable graduate.  2014 3B Braedon Barrett (15-White) is a junior at Barbe and had perhaps the best switch-hitting approach of any hitter today.  He has similar swing mechanics and bat speed from both sides, a rarity in a young hitter.

OF Cory Crow (16-Gold/2014, Deland, FL) has a strong 6-2/185 build and a strong right handed swing with lots of lift out front.  He used that strength and lift in his swing to lift a ball over the Green Monster in left field and squared up a number of other balls hard.

Crow's high school teammate 3B Garrett Hall (17-Purple/2014, Deland, FL) is a different type of hitter but very talented in his own right.  Hall has a short and strong line drive swing with quick strong hands that produce line drive after line drive.  We'd guess that he is probably a very high average type of hitter in game situations.

C Benito Santiago (17-Purple/2014, Pembroke Pines, FL), son of the former big league All-Star, might have had the most impressive overall BP round of the day.  Santiago is a left handed hitter with more strength than is obvious in his 5-11/168 frame but loads of quick twitch fibers and a very quick bat.  He hit a ball about 390 feet up the right centerfield alley and repeatedly crushed hard line drives to deep right field.

If anyone had counted who hit the most balls off the Green Monster, the hitter with the most would have likely been OF Conner Prater (17-Purple/2014, Melbourne, FL).  The 6-0/192 right handed hitter has a long lifting swing with lots of extension and bat speed and probably hit 5 balls off the wall after getting in an early groove.

The 17-Purple team, which had a number of players from the Orlando Scorpions organization on their roster, was by a large margin the most impressive of the 14 teams that took BP today.  Other players who graded out especially well included C Austin Hale (2014, Winter Springs, FL), OF Vincenzo Catanza (2015, Longwood, FL), SS Gabriel Coburn (2016, Winter Garden, FL) and OF Cameron Montgomery (2015, Windemere, FL).  Coburn was especially notable as he is still a freshman but had very good swing mechanics and present bat speed.

Calvin Scott III (2014 Newark, DE) has good bat speed, with line drive swing.  He has a large athletic strong frame.

Joshua Parker (2015 Boca Raton, FL) was 1 for 2 in the game with a double and two RBI's.  He showed a good bat path with good bat speed.

Luke Belt (2014 Vienna, VA) had good bat speed, hits from slightly open stance.  He had a triple with a run scored.  Has good plate coverage at the plate.

Kyle Arjona (2015 Cape Coral, FL) sat 84-86 mph with a good slider at 74 mph. He has a 3/4 arm slot, quick arm, good arm side on run fastball, showed excellent command of all his pitches.
Batting Practice Pitchers >>

12/28/2012 5:46:31 PM

When you have 26 teams and over 400 players that need to take batting practice, you can never have too many pitchers available.  Fortunately for everyone today, two unscheduled pitchers showed up to fill in some unexpected holes in the rotation.

The most notable was Mike "Mr. 7000" Mosley, who holds the Guinness Book of World Records mark for throwing 7,003 hittable balls over a 8 hour and 33 minute period in 2008.  Mosley has worked with numerous professional teams and was dubbed "Mr. Rubber Arm" by Tommy Lasorda in the early 2000's.  He's here in Fort Myers with former big leaguer Mike Cameron and his son Daz.  Mosley, who says he throws about 2,000 pitches a day, hardly even had a workout according to his standards, throwing to four teams and probably throwing in the vicinity of 800 pitches.

Here's a video of Mosley "at work".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uod2MO5cR84

The other pitcher who stepped up is much more well known to Perfect Game as he's been throwing at events for over a decade; Ralph Suarez.  Suarez cruised through 4 1/2 teams when another pitcher went down with a blister and will likely throw another 4-5 teams tomorrow as well.  He's a machine.  After one of the first hitters he faced crushed a long home run, he turned to the PG staff members with his arms open, as if to say "Tell me I don't help make these hitters look Good!"

Thanks to both gentlemen for their help!

Batting Practice Highlights - Part 1 >>

12/28/2012 5:32:42 PM

14 teams took batting practice today at the jetBlue Stadium field at "Fenway South".  It must have been a thrill for many of the players, even those who might be Yankees fans, to look out in left field and see a replica of the famous Green Monster.  While many players hit the wall today, only two cleared it.   More on them later.

C Robby Dau (5-Navy/2015, Dallas, GA) stood out right away for 5-Navy, the first team to hit.  Dau is a strongly built 5-9/180 receiver and has a very short  and crisp right handed swing with good present bat speed.  He keeps his swing mechanics simple and well balanced and the result was a round of hard line drives.

SS Jonathan Koski (5-Navy/2014, Chesire, CT) has a nice and projectable 6-2/185 build and his left handed bat has plenty of projection in it as well.  He takes a long stride into contact, which creates some length, but hits thru the ball at contact and has good bat speed with more to come as he gets stronger.

SS Jonathan India (6-Red/2015, Coral Springs, FL) jumps off the page in the program because of his early verbal commitment to U. Florida.  He's listed at 5-10/175 but appears bigger and stronger, strength that shows in his swing.  He uses his hips and lower half very well in his swing and stays short and fast to the ball.  He's a very legit guy with the bat.

OF Matthias Johnson (6-Red/2014, Jenks, OK) came all the way from Oklahoma to show off his tools and did a good job of it in Batting Practice, showing sound hitting mechanics and good balance to go with quick hands and gap to gap power.

3B David Villar (6-Red/2015, Pembroke Pines, FL) is still only a sophomore but has the strength of an older player at 6-1/187.  He has a simple power oriented swing that's especially effective when he's pulling the ball.

The first home run of the day came off the bat of SS Daniel Wentworth (9-Vegas Gold/2014, Perry, FL) but it was just one of many good swings that he put on the ball.  In fact, Wentworth's swing was more impressive for it's shortness than for its power potential.  He has very good bat speed and really squared the ball up well throughout the entire round.

SS Sam Armstrong (9-Vegas Gold/2014, Ocala, FL) is a left handed hitting middle infielder with an aggressive pull oriented swing and lots of bat speed, too.

There seem to be lots of players from Minnesota at this event and one that stood out was 3B Jack Mattson (10-Cedar/2015, Chanhassen, MN).  Mattson packs good present strength on his 5-11/190 build and is a similar hitter to Sam Armstrong (above).

OF Bryant Harris (10-Cedar/2015, Luella, GA) is one of the most impressive physical specimen's at the showcase with a strong and projectable 6-3/190 build.  He has present bat speed and can already hit the ball a long way to left centerfield and projects plus power in the future.
