2012 National Underclass Session 1 and West Uncommitted Blogs

Red vs. Green Game Highlights >>
--  The Red team pounded out 7 hits and scored 6 runs, both high totals for a showcase game.  OF Tyson Quoles (2014/Oaks Christian HS, Oxnard, CA) continued his hot hitting that definitely registered on the PG scouting staff, knocking a double and single, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.  SS Harrison McElroy (2014/Palisades Charter HS, Los Angeles, CA) really swung the bat well, driving a triple and reaching on an error and scoring twice, both on Quoles' hits.  McElroy is not consistent yet in his swing mechanics and balance but shows very good bat speed at times and has the ability at a young age to put lots of back spin on the ball, a marker for future power.  1B Austin Zwart (2014/Mingus Union HS, Cottonwood, AZ) had a hard hit double and has lots of strength in his right handed swing.  SS/RHP Grant Fennell (2014/Scripps Ranch HS, San Diego, CA) took the mound for the final inning and showed that he has 2-way potential as a prospect, topping out at 88 mph with an effortless arm action and tight spin on his curveball.

--  The Green team swung the bats very well, too, knocking out 10 hits but only scoring 4 runs.  OF Tyler Williams (2015/Kellis HS, Peoria, AZ) swung the bat very well, lining 2 hits, including one that was 90 mph off the barrel, and stealing 3 bases with his 6.5 speed.  Williams swung the bat much better against live pitching than he did in BP and used the strength on his 6-4/208 frame.  Sean Bouchard (2014/Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego, CA) was one of the few Green hitters who didn't get a hit but impressed none the less, lining one ball 88 mph off the bat and running 4.3 to first base on another.  Bouchard also showed very good hands and range at third base.
Maroon vs. Steel Game Highlights >>
--  OF/LHP Andrew Shaps (2014/Saguaro HS, Paradise Valley, AZ) showed why he has a verbal commitment to Arizona State, lashing a triple and lining out hard to centerfield in his two at bats, showing plus bat speed and very good swing mechanics.

--  3B/RHP Jordan Pearce (2014/El Camino HS, Oceanside, CA), who has a verbal commitment to San Diego, threw 3 no-hit innings, topping out at 89 mph and showing the makings of a plus curveball at 75-76 mph and some feel for a 75 mph change up.  It wouldn't surprise us if Pearce isn't throwing in the low 90's by next summer and his curveball is a legit weapon.

--  A couple of other primary position players who will be on the event top prospect list also threw.  SS Rayn Robinson (2014/Blue Valley HS, Overland Park, KS) pitched in the 82-84 mph range, while C Zach Taylor (2014/Horizon HS, Phoenix, AZ) topped out at 85 mph.

There were only 4 hits in the pitching dominated game.
Gold vs. Black Game Highlights >>
--  Top 2013 Canadian prospect Lachlan Fontaine (Sutherland HS, North Vancouver, BC) broke out in a big way, impressing the PG scouting staff in three different areas.  He had Gold's only 2 hits, including a double that short hopped the right field fence.  Defensively, he made on of the more impressive plays of the weekends with a quick handed stab of a hard line drive, a stop that one scout noted "looked like he had a hockey background as a goalie", which might even be true.  Fontaine then came into pitch the last inning and topped out at 88 mph with an 82 mph slider that had some bite.

--  OF Gustavo Escobar Jr (Yukon HS, Yukon, OR) had his third consecutive impressive game.  He hit the line drive that Fontaine made the highlight play on, then came up against Fontaine to lead off the 5th inning and crushed a double off a 87 mph fastball.  Escobar's bat, running speed and outfield defense all play at a high level and he plays the game hard.

--  OF Landon Brune (Marshall HS, Marshall, TX) has been mentioned in a couple of blogs thus far and keeps on performing at the plate.  He showed his bat speed and power with a triple that was 89 mph off the bat.

--  RHP Connor Syracuse (Brophy College Prep, Phoenix, AZ) threw three easy innings for Gold, striking out 4 hitters.  He has a smooth, low effort delivery and mature pitchability with an 82 mph fastball and 72 mph curveball.
White vs. Navy Game Highlights >>
--  OF/RHP Jared Janczak (2014/Belton HS, Temple, TX) had already established a place on the event Top Prospect list before taking the mound late Sunday morning.  But he bumped himself up a couple of notches with his 4 inning effort, pitching in the 87-89 mph range with a 74 mph curveball and 79 mph change up.  Janczak has a couple of mechanical tweeks that could put him in the low 90's pretty quickly, too.  He's a very talented all around athlete.

--  SS Andrew Banuelos (2014/Hawthorne HS, Inglewood, CA) got on top of a Janczak fastball in the second inning and lined a hard triple over the left fielder's head.  He also showed good arm strength at shortstop on defense.

--  Top prospect C Tanner Gragg (2014/Blue Valley West HS, Overland Park, KS) went 0-2 at the plate but stood out defensively, both for his catch/throw tools but also for the way he controlled the game from the catching position.

--  LHP Walker Reese (2015/Lake Travis HS, Austin, TX) has a nice 6-2/190 build and good left handed velocity for a sophomore, topping out at 82 mph.

--  1B Tanner Gilmore (2015/Bonita HS, Alta Loma, CA) has hit the ball as hard as any player at the showcase.  His 4th inning double was measured at 99 mph off the bat, all the more impressive as it was off a mid 70's fastball.  Gilmore will have to work hard to improve his overall athleticism but his strength and ability to hit the ball hard stand out.

--  C Gustavo Fimbres (2014/ Coronado HS, Coronado, CA) continues to swing a strong bat.  He has a nice balanced swing approach and plenty of strength at 6-2/195.  He had a line drive double over the left fielder's head.
Red vs. Steel Game Highlights >>
--  RHP/IF Jon Teaney (2014/Quartz Hill HS, Palmdale, CA) graded out as one of the best hitters at the showcase in batting practice and the blog comment was made that he would have to be a very talented pitcher to grade out better on the mound.  He pretty much did just that, striking out 8 hitters in 3 innings while pitching in the 87-90 mph range.  Teaney has some effort at release but he repeats his delivery well and has a very fast arm.  His 74 mph curveball had hard spin and some depth and he showed feel for a 78 mph change up.  Teaney also had a hard double to showcase his overall tools.

--  C Zach Taylor (2014, Horizon HS, Scottsdale, AZ) did a good job of handling Teaney's stuff and popped a 2.00 in the game.  Taylor is a strong right handed hitter with bat speed and lined a single that was 86 mph off the bat and scored a run.

--  3B Dane Tofteland (2014/Holy Trinity Academy, Okotoks, AB) lined an Rbi single to drive in Taylor that was 90 mph off the bat.

--  OF Tyson Quolas (2014/Oaks Christian HS, Oxnard, CA) missed a home run by about 10 feet, lifting a high and deep triple up the right centerfield gap that bounced on the warning track.  Quolas has shown an advanced bat in both BP and in the games.

--  SS Danny Terry (2014/Dublin HS, Dublin, CA) gets special mention for taking a 89 mph Teaney fastball in the ribs, refusing to come out of the game and then taking a good swing right away on an infield ground ball out.
Columbia Blue vs. Gold Game Highlights >>
--  RHP Jacob Smith (Highland HS, Gilbert, AZ) threw very well for Columbia Blue and has solid Division I tools.  He struck out 7 hitters in 3 scoreless innings, pitching in the 85-87 mph range with good spin on a 71 mph curveball and good deception on his 72 mph change up.  Smith hides the ball well in his delivery and has a mature mound presence and the ability to mix up his pitches.

--  2B Cal Krainock (Pine Creek HS, Colorado Springs, CO) continues to impress with his bat.  He lined a couple of singles and showed good speed and aggressiveness on the base paths as well.

--  OF Ryan Kravik (Plano East HS, Murphy, TX) also had a couple of hits for Columbia Blue, including a 2 run triple that showed his gap power.

--  C Garrett Crook (Centennial HS, Burleson, TX) has stood out for his catch and throw tools on defense during games and popped a 1.90 with 76 mph arm strength during drills.  The 5-8/170 right handed hitter has a sound fundamental swing and battles at the plate.

--  3B/RHP Kyle Roy (Yucaipa HS, Yucaipa, CA) threw very well in his 2 innings on the mound and may have a future as a pitcher.  He topped out at 84 mph but his best pitch was a 73-75 mph curveball that had hard late biting action.
Navy vs. Green Game Highlights >>
--  IF Connor Caspersen (2014/Amador Valley HS, Pleasanton, CA) is a switch-hitter who has a nice, crisp swing from both sides of the plate.  He hit the ball hard twice from the left side.  Caspersen also looked good defensively, starting a 6-4-3 double play with a quick exchange and perfect feet throw.

--  1B Tanner Gilmore (2015/Bonita HS, Alta Loma, CA) is very big and strong for his age at 6-3/225.  He has nice hitting and power tools to develop and had a hard hit double in the game.

--  SS/RHP Matt Lloyd (2014/Foothills Composite HS, Okotoks, AB) is one of many Canadians who've shown well this weekend.  He threw 3 shutout innings from a nice balanced delivery and topped out at 80 mph.  He has a very projectable right handed bat and had a single in the game.

--  OF Tyler Williams (2015/Kellis HS, Peoria, AZ) lined a ball to left field that was 90 mph off the bat.

--  3B Sean Bouchard (2014/Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego, CA) has of the best present tool sets of any player here and is one of the most projectable athletes as well.  He drove a double to left centerfield that carried about 370 feet just short of the fence.

--  SS/RHP Michael Macove (2014/Spring Valley HS, Las Vegas, NV) looked good on the mound.  He pitched in the 81-83 mph range with a loose, fast arm action and threw a 72 mph slider and 77 mph change up.

-- LHP Andrew Rosenzweig (2014/Miramonte HS, Orinda, CA) struck out 10 over his 4 innings of work.  He pitched at 78-81 mph with a funky deceptive delivery.  He showed feel for his curveball at 69 mph.
White vs. Maroon Game Highlights >>
--  C Tanner Gragg (2014, Blue Valley West HS, Overland Park, KS) continues to be one of the most impressive players at the Underclass Showcase.  He drove his second triple of the event up the left centerfield gap and impressed with his combination of short quick swing and power.  Defensively, Gragg popped a 1.96 in the game and the PG Scout who has covered both Gragg's games noted "He hasn't been back to the backstop once in 2 games."

--  LHP Tommy West (2014, Millard North HS, Omaha, NE) threw 4 innings, striking out 7 hitters with a fastball that topped out at 81 mph and a 70 mph slurve.  West is a 6-4/195 southpaw with good present strength and lots of room to get stronger.

Columbia Blue vs. Black Game Highlights >>
--  OF Cameron Baranek (Canyon HS, Orange, CA) had another outstanding game for Columbia Blue.  He went 0-2 at the plate but crushed the ball in both at bats, hitting deep fly balls to center and left fields.  He also made a diving laid out catch going back in centerfield.  The Perfect Game scouts are all wondering why Baranek doesn't have a D1 college commitment yet, as he clearly has the tools and skills to play at that level.

--  2B Christian Camarena (Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego, CA) showed solid bat speed, lining a hard single and also showed good speed on the bases.

--  OF Gustavo Escobar (Yukon HS, OK) continued his hot hitting with an Rbi single that drove in Camarena.  Escobar is another player that has D1 tools in the opinion of the Perfect Game scouts.

--  3B/RHP Jordan Valdez (St. Paul HS, La Mirada, CA) had the best raw stuff of the game's pitchers, throwing 2 perfect innings and topping out at 82 mph with a 70 mph 12/6 downer curveball and throwing strikes aggressively with both pitches.
Gold vs. Black Highlights >>
-Billy Clemens (2013, RHP/1B, Corona Del Sol, Tempe, AZ) has a 3/4 arm slot with a long loose arm action and an online delivery. His FB ranged from 81-84 MPH and mixed in a 12/6 CB at 70 MPH.

-Gustavo Escobar Jr. (2013, OF/RHP, Yukon HS, Yukon, OK) He has a high 3/4 arm slot with a long arm action. Showed good arm speed and an online delivery. His FB ranged from 84-87 MPH. He is raw on the mound with more velocity to come. At the plate he went 1-2 with a single and run scored. Displayed consistent hard contact.

-Lachlan Fontaine (2013, 3B/SS, Sutherland HS, North Vancouver, BC) his bat stayed hot going 1-2 with a hard LD single registering 93 MPH off his bat. Showed good bat speed, and consistent hard contact.

-Kyle Yockey (2013, SS/RHP, Layton Christian Academy, Layton, UT) showed off his 6.85 60-time stretching a normal single into a double. Showed aggression and good instincts on the bases.
Steel vs. White Highlights >>
-Tanner Gragg (2014, C/1B, Blue Valley West, Overland Park, KS) went 1-2 with a triple that registered 88 MPH off his bat, and had a line out to LF that registered at 94 MPH. He displayed a short simple stroke with plus balance and good extension.

-Matt Guenther (2014, OF/1B/IF, Geneva Community, Geneva, IL) had a ball register 91 MPH off his bat on his only AB of the game. Displayed a power approach at the plate with good balance and strength in his swing.

-Kevin (Alex) Shelton (2014, RHP, Lake Travis HS, Lakeway, TX) pitched 6 innings, giving up 0 hits and striking out 7. He has a projectable frame listed at 6'4'' 185. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot, arm really works, quick and whippy arm action. FB range was 82-86 MPH. Throws a lot of strikes, mixed in a 11/5 CB with some late bite and fade, CH had good arm side run.

-Walker Reese (2015, LHP, Lake Travis HS, Austin, TX) was effective on the mound pitching 3 innings, giving up 3 hits, and punching out 5 hitters. He has a high 3/4 arm slot and had late life to his FB that sat 79-81 MPH and mixed in a good CH with good fade at 71 MPH to keep hitters off-balance. Flashed CB potential.

National Underclass Batting Practice Highlights >>
Highlights from the National Underclass Batting Practice (Players 2014 unless noted)

--  3B Sean Bouchard (Green #15, Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego, CA): Cathedral Catholic is becoming quite the prospect school and the 6-3/180 Bouchard looks like he will be part of that mix.  He has a nice balanced swing with good bat speed and lots of projection.  He also ran an impressive 6.7 in the 60.

--  SS Justin Thaxton (Green #11, Regis Jesuit HS, Aurora, CO):  Thaxton has an aggressive left handed swing and more power than it looks like he should have in his frame.  He does a very good job of moving into contact and using his lower half.  It wasn't surprising when he crushed a triple in his first game at bat after watching how he finished BP.

--  3B/RHP Jordan Pearce (Maroon #15, El Camino HS, Oceanside, CA):  The 6-2/205 Pearce is a very strong athlete with a pull and lift approach, so it wasn't unexpected to see him blast a HR on the first pitch he saw in BP (always a nice thing to see).  His swing gets long at times but there is no mistaking his bat speed and lift.  He may be a better pitching prospect, though, which we should see more of tomorrow when he takes the mound.

--  OF/LHP Andrew Shaps (Maroon #17, Saguaro HS, Paradise Valley, AZ):  Shaps is a multi-talented athlete who already has a verbal commitment to Arizona State.  He has a short, quick line drive swing from the left side and got into a nice groove in BP.  He also ran 7.06 and threw 92 from the outfield.

--  SS Rayn Robinson (Maroon #44, Blue Valley HS, Overland Park, KS): The 6-3/185 Robinson hits from a bit more of a spread stance than is normally comfortable but he has bat speed and strength and the ball comes off the barrel hard.  He projects nicely to gain more strength.

--  MIF Alejo Lopez (Navy #8, Holy Trinity HS, Okotoks, AB):  Lopez doesn't look very strong at 5-10/165 but the Canadian has some bat speed from both sides of the plate.  He has similar hitting mechanics both left and right handed but a bit more speed and extension left handed, which he showed on a home run.

--  SS Matt Lloyd (Navy #16, Foothills Composite HS, Okotoks, AB):  There are some good prospects here from Canada, including these two from Alberta.  Lloyd has a nice projectable 6-1/170 build and a smooth left handed swing that has present bat speed with more to come.

--  RHP/IF Jonathan Teaney (Red #18, Quartz Hill HS, Palmdale, CA):  Teaney is a primary pitcher but he will have to throw very well to convince us he's a better pitcher.  He took an outstanding BP, showing present bat speed with a loose, tension free swing and lots of projection.

--  MIF Harrison McElroy (Red #4, Palisades Charter HS, Los Angeles, CA):  McElroy will need to work on being able to repeat his swing mechanics but he has lots of natural talent and present bat speed.

--  SS Grant Fennell (Red #16, Scripps Ranch HS, San Diego, CA):  Fennell is a quick twitch athlete with good present strength, which most often translates to bat speed.  Fennell definitely has that and the ball comes off his barrel hard.  He can make some swing adjustments to make that will enable him to continue to develop as a hitter.

--  OF Tyson Quolas (Red #5, Oaks Christian HS, Oxnard, CA):  Quoles is a very aggressive hitter who does a very good job moving through contact and using his lower half to help generate bat speed.  He has bat speed and hits hard line drives.

--  MIF Nicholas Quintana (Steel #2, Arbor View HS, Las Vegas, NV):  Quintana is only a 2016 (!) but had one of the nicest swings at the event.  He's got a very good chance to develop into a top prospect hitter over the next four years.

--  C Zach Taylor (Steel #33, Horizon HS, Scottsdale, AZ):  Taylor is very strong at 6-1/208 and it shows in his bat speed and power potential.  He tends to get long to the ball looking for power but is strong enough that he really doesn't need to lengthen his swing to drive the ball hard.  Taylor also threw 82 mph and popped a 1.89 in drills, so he has catching tools as well.

--  1B Eric Ramirez (White #8, Rio Mesa HS, Oxnard, CA):  Ramirez is another player who is plenty strong at 6-0/200 who gets a bit long at times trying to be aggressive and lift the ball, but he has nice bat speed and squared the ball up well from the left side.

Green vs. Maroon Highlights >>
-Matt Roll (2015, RHP, Rocky Mountain HS, Meridian, ID) has a lean athletic build. On the mound, he pitches from a high 3/4 arm slot and hides the ball well. He has a compact online delivery, with a clean arm action. His FB sat 80-83 MPH with short sinking action and mixed in a 12/6 CB at 72 MPH. He is a very interesting young prospect.

-Andrew Shaps (2014, OF/LHP, Saguaro HS, Paradise Valley, AZ) pitches from a low 3/4 arm slot and works through with a loose easy arm action. The ball comes out of his hand well, has some arm side run on FB that sat 83-86 topping out at 87 MPH. Complimented his FB with a Slurve that had good spin. Projects well.

-Jordan Pearce (2014, 3B/SS/RHP, El Camino HS, Oceanside, CA) went 0-2 in the game, but still impressed displaying good bat speed and lift in his swing with a power approach.

-Justin Thaxton (2014, SS, Regis Jesuit, Aurora, CA) was 1-2 in the game with a triple that registered 88 MPH off his bat. He displayed a power approach with a fluid stroke and the ball jumps off his bat.

West Uncommitted Batting Practice Highlights >>
Highlights from the West Uncommitted Showcase Batting Practice Saturday morning

--  OF Landon Brune (Black #2, Marshall HS, TX):  Brune has good strength at 5-11 and hits right handed from a spread stance.  He has a short line drive swing but got the ball in the air and had some power, including blasting one home run over the left field fence at the White Sox minor league complex.  Brune also ran a 6.75 in the 60.

--  OF Gustavo Escobar Jr. (Black #4, Yukon HS, OK):  Escobar has a commitment to long time junior college powerhouse Seminole CC.  He was very toolsy in workouts, running a 6.8 and throwing 92 mph from the outfield.  Escobar hits from a tall, open stance and has short and simple hand path to the ball with good hand quickness.  His best contact was hard pull line drive contact.

--  MIF Kole Eaves (Columbia Blue #7, Pasadena (TX) Memorial HS):  The 5-10/150 Eaves has a short quick swing from the right side from a good hand load.  He peppered the middle of the field with hard line drives and looked like he had a nice mature idea how to hit.  He's a 6.89 runner who profiles at second base.

--  MIF Cal Krainock (Columbia Blue #8, Pine Creek HS, Colorado Springs, TX):  Krainrock has a nice aggressive right handed swing and some strength and bat speed.  He's loose and extended out front and hits the ball hard.  He's also a good runner at 6.84.

--  3B Lachlan Fontaine (Gold #15, Sutherland HS, North Vancouver, BC):  A 6-2/210 left handed hitter, Fontaine was originally scheduled to go to the World Showcase in early January but switched to this event due to some conflicts.  He was the top hitter in the West Uncommitted batting practice and there is no question he's a high Division I hitter.  Fontaine has plenty of strength to drive the ball and has a loose, extended swing with lots of pull power.  He also opened eyes by throwing 90 mph during infield drills.  Scouts will have to account for him next spring  with these type of tools.

--  OF Tyler Garrison (Gold #2, Arbor View HS, Las Vegas, NV):  Garrison has plenty of strength on his compact 5-10/185 frame and uses it well in his swing.  He's a bit rotational and is looking to pull the ball but has bat speed and gets the ball in the air.  He also hit a BP home run.

--  OF Cameron Baranek (Columbia Blue #3, Canyon HS, Orange, CA):  I'm a big fan of Baranek's from past events and know he can swing the bat, although he wasn't as good in BP today as he's capable of.  He's definitely capable of hitting at the next level in my opinion.

Red vs. Navy Highlights >>

-Michael Biasello (2013, RHP/3B/SS, Vandegrift HS, Austin, TX) has a good lean pitchers build. He pitches from a 3/4 arm slot and a short arm action with solid arm speed. Michael likes to work quick and worked down in the zone with a balanced delivery. He  finishes to the plate with good extension out front.  Displayed arm side run on his FB that sat 82-85 and topped out at 86 MPH.

-Ryan Arambula (2013, RHP/SS, Bell Gardens HS, Maywood, CA) threw from a 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action while hiding the ball well. Has a slow tempo on mound with a balanced online delivery. Showed the ability to throw strikes and worked down in the zone with his FB.
