2012 17u/18u East Cobb Invitational
RHP Reed Hayes (2013, Science Hill HS, Johnson City, TN) threw five innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts, and also chipped in on offense with two hits, a walk, and an RBI, as the East Cobb Yankees 17u combined for 10 hits to beat the Georgia Titans 11-1 in five innings.
Hayes throws downhill, with good arm speed and action coming from a high 3/4 angle, and has a balanced, smooth delivery, in which he puts his lower half to good use. He has projectable stuff, working with a fastball and curveball; his fastball sitting 81-85, touching 86 mph, while his curveball has 12/6 break with out-pitch potential. Hayes issued just two walks, throwing 66.7% of his pitches for strikes. At the plate, he shows a fluid stroke and good bat speed with gap power.
Harrison McClure (2013, North Atlanta HS, Atlanta, GA), drew a walk, doubled twice and drove in a run, showing a compact swing while using a narrow base, with an upright, closed stance, holding his hands out and away from his body. McClure has a lean, projectable frame, with room to fill out.
Eight different Yankees contributed RBIs in this game.
East Cobb Indians 17u' OF Bill Rose (2013, North Cobb, GA) hit the winning single to LF to give the Indians the walk off win, 4-3, over the Upstate Mavericks 18u. The Indians responded after The Mavericks went up 3-2 in the top of the 7th.
East Cobb was also led by C Anthony Perez (2013, Peachtree Ridge HS, GA) who had 2 hits, 1 run, and 1 RBI. One of his hits was a double as he recorded the only multi-hit day between the two teams.
The Indians' RHP Cole Branch (2013, Riverwood HS, GA) set up hitters well with his FB and CB en route to giving up 1 ER and 4 hits through 6 innings of work. His FB would work between 75-78 while CB touched between 61-63. LHP Brandon Baker (2013, Redan HS, GA) finished the game for the Indians with his lively FB. He gave up 2 ER and 1 hit through 1 inning but his FB had potential hitting between 85-87 and peaking at 88.
The Upstate Mavericks were led by the trio of University of South Carolina-Sumter commit SS Will Thompson (2012, Dorman HS, SC), Cory Cremonese, and North Greenville commit C Wheeler Smith (2012, Laurens HS, SC). They would each have 1 hit and 1 RBI apiece.
They were paced by the solid outing of LHP Teddy Cillis (2013, Blair Academy, NY) who gave up 1 ER and 3 hits in 6 innings while fanning 11. He was great around the plate, had life on his FB, and had a solid CB. He evenly mixed his FB with his CB hitting between 81-85 on his FB topping at 86 and reaching 70-74 on his CB.
