Thursday Batting Practice Standouts >>
The final eight teams took batting practice Thursday morning at the Red Sox 5-Plex.  Here are a group of players who especially stood out.

C Forrest Bramlett (2013/Gilmer County HS, Ellijay, GA):  It's always good to see a young hitter drive the ball deep to right centerfield and Bramlett has the strength and bat speed to do that.
MIF Jonah Garrison (2015/Boone HS, Orlando, FL):  Garrison's father has an extensive football background and the athleticism shows in this freshman.  He has very strong hands and the ball already jumps off his bat hard.
1B Randolph Gassaway (2013/Woodland HS, Ellenwood, GA):  Gassaway's 6-3/205 frame gives him a long and strong swing with plus bat speed and he swings like he wants to hurt the ball
1B Jacob Heyward (2013/Eagles Landing Christian Academy, McDonough, GA):  Jason's younger brother has improved tremendously over the last year and is a legit prospect in his own right.
C Griffin Helms (2014/Norcross HS, Duluth, GA):  Helms is very strong for his age and has a simple, short swing with good, loose extension out front.
OF Kel Johnson (2014/Home Schooled, Palmetto, GA):  The 6-4/200 right handed hitter had one of the most aggressive swings of the showcase, along with some of the best bat speed.  He's one to follow very closely.
OF Terry McClure (2013/Westlake HS, Atlanta, GA):  McClure, who could of well been the best overall athlete at the showcase, has some extra length to his swing he'll have to continue to work on but he has excellent barrel whip through the hitting zone and lots of lift in his swing for future power.
1B Zach Michalski (2013/Wesleyan Christian Academy, Belews Creek, NC):  Usually when you scout a 6-6/215 hitter you see a long swing, but Michalski combines huge strength and bat speed with the swing mechanics of a 6-0/180 type of athlete.  He could develop into a very special hitter.
OF Daniel Rowbottom (2013/St. Ignatius HS, Boradview Heights, OH):  Rowbottom had one of the best fundamental swings of the 400 or so hitters at the event and sees the ball very well from the left side.
OF Shelton Shimming (2014/Deland HS, Deland, FL):  Shimming has a very projectable 6-1/170 build and a loose, easy swing that's going to develop real power down the road.
3B Justin Williams (2013/Terrebonne HS, Houma, LA):  Williams is some kind of strong and was one of 2 hitters at the showcase to grade out as a top of the grading scale "10" in the power department, the other being Zach Michalski.

-RHP Andrew Lantrip (2013, Livington HS, Goodrich, TX) is an athletic pitcher with lots of projection as well as present velo. He sat 84-88 with long arm action but a smooth delivery that comes out easy. His fastball jumps out of his hand and a sweeping slider at 73-75 compliments it nicely.

-C Alfreddi Ramos (2013, Mater Lakes Academy, Hialeah, FL) is a strong, athletic, left-handed hitting catcher. That prototype is always interesting to coaches and scouts. Ramos has power in his bat and seems to square all the balls up. He has good lateral movement and arm strength behind the plate.

-SS/3B Sam Mrstik (2013, City High, Iowa City, IA) is familiar to PG staff as he has attended many PG events as well as playing in the fall for Iowa Select team. Mrstik has a very good idea and approach at the plate as well as loose, easy bat speed and the ability to take the ball to all fields.

-Smooth is the word that comes to mind when watching LHP Christian Pelaez (2013, Florida Christian HS, Miami, FL) on the mound. The slight, slender lefty is athletic and has a smooth delivery with quick arm action, running his fastball up to 83 and showing a 12/6 curveball at 66-67.
17-Steel vs. 18-White Highlights >>
-MIF Ronnie Rocca (2013, St. Andrews HS, Boca Raton, FL) is a small build player with a short swing and very solid contact skills. He squared up balls in all three at-bats going 3-3 with two singles and a double. He also made all the plays at SS and 2B showing short arm action and a quick release.

-C Gabe Levanti (2013, Baker HS, Baldwinsville, NY) is a strongly built catcher with good receiving skills and arm strength. He was consistently 2.00-2.05 pop times in between innings. He is a little more raw with the bat but has good extension and leverage in his swing, projecting for power in the future.

-RHP/OF Christopher Simon (2014, Enterprise, AL HS) had a very good workout from the outfield and crushed a leadoff double to left-center field in his final at-bat, bringing his hands in nicely and getting thru the ball and driving it into the gap. He also topped at 80 on the mound, throwing on a downhill plane, also flashing a 69 mph curveball with some depth.

-RHP Robbie Baker (2013, The Lovett School, Atlanta, GA) is a lean, projectable Georgian with an online delivery and a fastball that was consistently 80-82, topping at 84 with movement. His velocity projects and he will benefit from better feel for his 67-68 mph curveb all and 72-73 mph changeup.

-LHP Axel Bueter (2014, Wauseon, OH HS) struck out seven in two innings of work showing one of the best curveballs of the day. He was 79-81 with his fastbal but his 1/7 curve had very good shape and depth and incurred many swings and misses.

-SS Errol Robinson (2013, St. John's College HS, Boyds, MD) is the kind of quick twitch athlete that scouts and coaches love. He has a loose swing with a quick bat and gets down the line very well from the right side.

-SS Drew Reid (2013, Maret School, Washington, DC) showed athleticism and a solid swing from both sides of the plate, but it was his quick hands and good footwork at SS that made him standout on the day.

-OF Kevin Williams (2014, American Heritage HS, Miramar, FL) is a good athlete with a quick bat and strong actions. He has a strong lower half and showed the ability to go the other way, ripping a line drive to right-center field in the 4th inning. He has wrist and hand strength projecting for good pop in the future.

-LHP Scott Tully (2013, Reading Memorial, Reading, MA) took the mound for the last three frames, throwing a consistent 83-85 with a top of 86 as he hid the ball well and had good extension, getting on hitters quickly. His arm works well and he stays closed with his front side. His changeup has good sink and is better when thrown 72-73 rather than 67-68 that he showed at times. His curveball at 67-69 had shape but not hard break. Tully impressed with a standout final inning of work striking out the side and sitting 86 with his curve showing improved depth and late break.
Col. Blue-15 VS. Kelly Green-16 Highlights >>
Josh Grubbs (2013, RHP, Venice HS, Englewood, FL) had his fastball sitting at 82-83mph with it topping out at 84mph with his curveball at 66-69mph and a changeup that was 66mph. Grubbs has a 3/4 arm slot, some arm strength, his arm works, has some arm side run on his fastball, and a balanced delivery.

Clarke Schmidt (2014, MIF, Allatoona HS, Acworth, GA) reached base a couple of times for Col. Blue. Schmidt has a medium frame, who makes consistent contact at the plate, and makes plays defensively.

Anthony Lyons (2013, OF, Arlington Martin HS, Delworthington Gardens, TX) had a hit in the game for Col. Blue. Lyons has a big frame with a solid build, has good bat speed, and smoked a line drive single to the opposite field in the game.

Silento Sayles (2013, OF, Port Gibson HS, Pattison, MS) had 3 hits in the game with 4 stolen bases for Kelly Green. Sayles has good speed, is an aggressive base runner, and was clocked at 4.13 from home to first.

Moises Bello (2013, MIF, Angel De La Guarda HS, San Juan Guarico, VZ) showed well defensively this evening. Bello has quick actions, some arm strength, has a quick exchange, and when he is on base is an aggressive baserunner.

Stone Garrett (2014, OF, George Ranch HS, Sugarland, TX) showed well at the plate this evening. Garrett has an athletic build, with good bat speed, and the ball jumps off his bat.
5-Purple vs. 6-Vegas Gold >>

-OF Dalton Duty (2013, Palatka, FL HS) had the big blow for the 5-Purple offense with a solo home run to right field. Duty is very aggressive at the plate with a classic uppercut left-handed swing. He drove a low, inside fastball over the fence in straight-away RF to put 5-Purple up 2-0.

-OF/C Beau Zeihan (2013, Portage, WI HS) is a long, projectable athlete who was good in the outfield as well as behind the plate, a position that he is new to. Zeihan received well and had a pop of 2.06 in between innings and ripped a single up the middle in his first at bat.

-C/OF Trevor Goldberg (2013, Air Academy HS, Colorado Springs, CO) is a good receiver with quick feet and threw out two runners on the bases as well as showing a quick bat with a pull approach at the plate.

-RHP/1B Michael White (University School of NSU, Pembroke Pines, FL) tripled in each of his first two at-bats, showing opposite field pop, twice driving balls to the right field fence. He is a long, projectable athlete and the ball comes off his bat well with good sound.

White was even better on the mound as he struck out seven and allowed just one hit in three innings. He worked 81-83, topping at 85. His velocity was deceptive as he got on hitters quick due to his great extension and long arm action. His best off-speed pitch was a changeup at 69-71 with good arm action and some late sink. He also used two off-speed pitches, a 69-71 mph slider with slurvy break and a 12/6 curveball with bigger shape and solid break at 66-68. He used his slider more frequent but had better feel for the curveball.

-RHP Yianni Pavlopoulos (2013, Providence Catholic, Homer Glen, IL) was the hardest thrower of the game, running his fastball up to 87. He featured simple, step-throw mechanics and repeated his delivery well. His off-speed pitches were inconsistent but showed potential, as his 78 mph slider flashed sharp late break.

-Starting pitchers RHP Kyle Pluta (2013, St. Ignatius HS, North Ridgeville, OH) and RHP Juan Pimentel (2013, Felix Varela HS, Miami, FL) were both strike throwers who repeated their deliveries and threw strikes with Pluta topping at 85 and Pimentel at 84. Pimentel did feature a 72-74 mph changeup with good arm action that will get a lot of outs and Pluta’s 69-71 mph curveball with 11/5 break showed tighter bite and better command as he went along.

-6-Vegas Gold SS Luis Guillorme (2013, Chaminade-Madonna HS, Davie, FL) is a very aggressive baserunner but stands out most with his smooth, easy tools at SS. He gets to balls easily with short, quick steps and a very quick transfer and release make his arm strength play from deep on the left side of the infield. He made nearly every play look routine.

More Batting Practice Standouts - Day 1 >>
Here are some more of the standouts from the 16 teams that took batting practice on Wednesday.

C Edgar Badaraco (2014/American Heritage HS, Miramar, FL): Long loose fast swing with very good power potential.

MIF Charcer Burks (2013/Travis HS, Houston, TX): Burks does everything on the field well and has a easy, athletic swing and pulls the ball hard consistently.

C Anthony De La Cruz (2013/Pace HS, Hialeah, FL): De La Cruz packs lots of strength and power in his 5-8/170 frame and uses it to drive the ball hard.

SS Evan Dougherty (2014/Bishop Verot HS, Fort Myers): Very projectable athlete who has the chance to have plus power with more strength.

OF Collin Edwards (2013/Seckman HS, Arnold, MO): Looks the part at 6-2/195, a bit raw in his approach but has big power potential.

C Karl Ellison (2013/Barron Collier HS, Naples, FL): Very strong with lots of lift in his right handed swing.

MIF Gordon Fisher (2014/U Detroit Jesuit HS, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI): 6-2/160 with lots of projection, has an easy loose swing now with deceptively strong hands at contact.

3B Will Foreman (2013/Lamar HS, Houston, TX): Very aggressive hitter who generates bat speed and drives the ball hard.

1B Levi Hollingsworth (2014/Columbia HS, Lake City, FL): Oversized left handed hitter in the Dan Vogelbach mode who hit some bombs.

C Henri Lartique (2013/Southhaven HS, Southhaven, MS): Switch-hitter who really graded out well left handed with a short, quick swing with bat speed.

SS Sam Mrstik (2013, City HS, Iowa City, IA): Smooth swing and the ball carries very well off the barrel.

IF Brooks Morgan (2013/Buchholz HS, Gainesville, FL): Loose easy swing with some bat speed and consistent hard mid field contact.

MIF Cole Ondrejka (2013/Island Coast HS, North Fort Myers, FL): Moves through contact very well to help generate bat speed.

3B Jason Plyn (2014/Home Schooled/Lake City, FL): Absurdly strong for his age, overpowers the ball.

OF Bradley Ramon (2014/Ferguson HS, Miami, FL): Very strong for his age, has the ability to pull and lift the ball.

C Chris Tinsman (2014/Cape Elizabeth HS, Cape Elizabeth, ME): Catchers who can hit were one of the themes today and a talented prospect from Maine is always fun to see.
Top Batting Practice Hitters >>
16 of the 24 teams at the National Underclass took batting practice today on Clemente Field at Terry Park.

8 of the hitters really stood out for me, grading out in the 9-10 range on the PG grading scale.  They were, in alpha order:

C Scott Adkins (2013/Bob Jones HS, Madison, AL):  Adkins is a very polished left handed hitter with big bat speed and power and he stays very short to the ball for his ability to lift and drive the ball.  And we all know how rare left handed hitting catchers with pop are.

3B Juan Escarra (2013/Mater Academy, Hialeah, FL):  Escarra is strong and athletic at 6-2/185 with a sweet left handed swing that's just going to keep adding bat speed.

OF Stone Garrett (2014/George Ranch HS, Sugarland, TX):  Garrett has a smooth, easy extended swing with present bat speed and the ball really carries off the bat.  A bit better rhythm and added strength and Garrett could have the highest ceiling of any hitter who worked out today.

LHP/OF Jonathan Hernandez (2013/Pace HS, Hialeah, FL):  Hernandez is a primary left handed pitcher but he unless he is really, Really good on the mound, his hitting tools are going to be his future ticket.  He hit some bombs and did it easily.

1B/LHP Nick Longhi (2013/Venice HS, Venice, FL):  Along with having plus bat speed from the right side, Longhi also was one of the few hitters to show the ability to drive the ball to both RCF and to the pull side.  Not that it matters in evaluating a hitter but Longhi also touched 90 mph on the mound earlier in the day.

1B/BHP Aubrey McCarty (2013/Colquitt County HS, Doerun, GA):  McCarty is a unique type of athlete, who is both a switch-hitter and switch-pitcher, along with being 6-3/200 with plus strength.  He hit showed outstanding power from both sides of the plate.

1B David Palenzuela (2013/Pace HS, Miami Lakes, FL):  The 6-2/180 left handed hitter has a very smooth and polished approach at the plate and has true hitter's hands that enable him to square up everything.  He's just going to improve with more strength.

C Alffredi Ramos (2013/Mater Academy, Hialeah, FL):  Mater Academy is going to have a scary good team this spring, as Ramos and Juan Escarra are just a couple of the quality young prospects supporting PG All-American Albert Almora.  Ramos, like Scott Adkins, has the added value of being a left handed hitting catcher with power.

DR
11 - Black vs 12 - Teal Highlights >>

19 - Navy vs 20 - Red Highlights >>
-Navy 1B/RHP Zach Michalski (2013 Wesleyan Christian Academy, Balews Creek, NC) impressed with his big time raw power. The 6’ 6” right handed hitter blasted a triple in the fourth inning, showing a good balanced swing, with big time raw power.

-Red SS Justin Thaxton (2014 Las Animas HS, CO) showed off some big time power of his own, slamming a towering two-run Home Run to right center field in the seventh.

-Navy MIF/RHP Liam Sabino (2014 Blair Academy, East Stroudsburg, PA) showed well both ways, going 1-for-3 with some power potential at the plate. But it was his defensive play at shortstop that was most impressive, with smooth quick actions and sure hands. He also topped out at 82 mph with four strikeouts on the mound.

-Red RHP/C Christian Fasig (2013 Martin County HS, Stuart, FL) sat 79-81 on the mound, with a 67mph slider and 75 mph changeup. At the plate he went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

-Gold LHP/OF DaltonMoats (2013 Park Hill HS, Kansas City, MO) struck out all nine batters hefaced, sitting 82-85 with his fastball, and backing it up with a good 75 mphcurveball. Moats hides the ball well in his delivery and showed good command ofboth pitches.

-Columbia Blue C BeauStrickland (2013 Pickens HS, Sunset, SC) impressed with his in-gamereceiving and blocking skills behind the plate, and projects to develop highlevel defensive tools.

Teams 1-12 OF Highlights >>
-Lincoln Henzman (2014, Lexington Christian Academy, Lexington, KY) is a player who stood out at August’s Ohio Valley Showcase in his hometown with his athleticism and arm strength. He was impressive again a thousand south as he was aggressive fielding the ball, showing clean hands and smooth arm action on a downhill plane with 85 mph velocity.

-The two Texas Orange teams, full of players from the Marietta based East Cobb program had the most impressive teams of athletic outfielders with Josh Hart (2013, Parkview HS, Lilburn, GA), Anthony Young (2013, Columbus, GA HS), Daz Cameron (2015, Eagles Landing Christian Academy, McDonough, GA), Jacob Heyward (2013, Eagles Landing Christian Academy, McDonough,GA), and Terry McClure (2013, Westlake HS, Atlanta, GA) all showing top level fielding skills and loose quick arms. Hart’s OF velo was 89, Young at 86, Heyward at 83, and McClure at 86.

Cameron, son of longtime ML Outfielder Mike, and the youngest of the group, may have been the most impressive with free and easy athleticism and loose arm action and a velo of 82.

-Avery Geyer (2013,Pensacola Catholic HS, Navarre, FL) is a physically compact and strong player with long arm action and quickness in him arm. He had a velo of 85 and showed very good carry and accuracy and is a player to keep an eye on the rest of this showcase and in the upcoming HS season.

-Dalton Duty (2013, Palatka, FL HS) has impressed PG scouts before with his all around play at the Sunshine East Showcase as well as with the Florida Hardballers travel team. He had the most advanced feel for the OF position of all players, fielding cleanly and getting thru the ball very well and showing arm strength up to 87.

-Christopher Koppenhaver (2014, Pine Crest School, Davie, FL) is listed as a primary RHP and showed why with long, downhill arm action and lots of extension. He is a solid athlete who showed good feel in the outfield and will be an arm to watch when he takes the mound. He was 85 from the OF

-Cre Finfrock (2014, Jensen Beach, FL HS) with his lean, wiry 5’11, 150 lb. frame does not look the part of a player with some best arm strength at a PG showcase. But first glances are deceiving as he has an extremely loose arm and solid mechanics as the ball jumps out of his hand. He projects very well and also shows athleticism and light footwork in the OF and a velo of 88.

-Chris Gaetano (2013, Scranton Prep School, Madison Township, PA) is a projectable athlete with long arm action and velocity up to 86. The ball comes out of his hand very well and he gets downhill with good extension.

-Justin Williams (2013, Terrebonne, Houma, LA) is one of the handful of players attending this event that have already committed to play for a major D1 school. The LSU commit is one of the most impressive physical specimen’s of the showcase and although he has unconventional mechanics and arm action, his quick twitch athleticism takes over and allowed him to throw 89 from the OF.

-Jonathan Flores
(2013, Pine Charter HS, Miramar, FL) is a strong, well-proportioned athlete with very short arm action but good arm strength, up to 85. The ball came out of his hand well and was accurate with carry.
Infield Workout Highlights >>
Below are a few of the infielders who stood out during the Day 1 Workouts (listed in alphabetical order):

-Moises Bello (2013 Angel De  La Guarda, San Juan Guarico, Venezuela) showed quick actions, a quick release, and a short arm action with good range.

-Bryan Bermudez (2013 Monsignor Pace  HS, Miami Lakes, FL) showed very quick aggressive actions, attacking the baseball well and showing sound footwork.

-Edwin Bonilla (2013 Osceola HS, Kissimmee, FL) showed quick actions with good lateral agility and soft hands.

-Charcer Burks (2013 Travis HS, Houston, TX) showed quick actions and good all around athleticism.

-Greg Deichmann (2014 Brother Martin HS, Metairie, LA) showed why he is one of the highest ranked players in the class of 2014, throwing 83 mph across the diamond with good carry and a quick transfer. He also showed very good skills fielding the ball to his backhand.

-Jonah Garrison (2015 Boone HS, Orlando, FL) showed a very quick transfer with sound catch and throw skills, throwing 79 mph across the infield and projects to develop.

-Simon Gravel (2013 Marie Mediatrice Center, Terrebonne, QC) showed well in the infield workouts after posting an impressive 1.93 pop time during the catcher workout. Gravel is turning heads during his first PG event, and looks to be a rare, exciting prospect from the province of Quebec.

-PG veteran Wesley Jones (2013 Redan HS, Lithonia, GA) was impressive, as usual. Throwing 88 mph across the diamond with good defensive actions.

-Nick Kanavas (2013 Brookfield East HS, Brookfield, WI) fired 87 mph across the infield with good carry on his throws, with sure hands.

-Greg Lewis (2013 St. Stephens HS, Hickory, NC) had a very good showing in the 1B workout, with good balance and range.

-Michael Mediavilla (2014 Mater Academy School, Hialeh, FL) showed very good athleticism in the 1B workout, if he were right handed he would likely make a good defender on the left side of the infield.

-Manuel Pazos (2013 Pace HS, Miami, FL) followed up an impressive showing in the catcher workout (1.86 pop time) with a good showing in the infield. As a secondary MIF, Pazos threw 85 across the diamond with good actions. Should he outgrow SS, he will likely have enough arm strength for 3B.

-Pedro Perez (2013 Burlington City HS, NJ) posted the top infield velocity of the day, firing 90 mph across the infield, with good actions and a quick release.

-Logan Warmoth (2014 Lake Brantley HS, Longwood, FL) showed good footwork and hands, decent actions and a short smooth arm action, throwing 79 mph from the infield (82 from OF)
