2011 Atlantic Coast Top/Underclass Showcase

Here is an early look at some of the top players from the Atlantic Coast Underclass Showcase in Greensboro NC.  Players are in no particular order.

Reed Rohlman 2013, (OF, Moore, SC, Byrnes HS): Athletic build, shows knowledge for game, makes solid contact at plate and shows bat speed.

Reed Hayes 2013, (OF/RHP, Johnson City TN, Science Hill): Strong armed OF throwing 89 from right field and topping at 84 on mound and showing a solid 12-6 curveball with depth and bite.

John Booker 2013, (OF/INF, Chesterfield, VA, Home Schooled): Solid actions on INF, feet work well, threw 83 from OF and 80 on INF, using a quick release, makes adjustments at plate, solid contact mid field approach.

Taylor Garcznski 2013 (OF, Salisbury, NC, West Rowan HS): Strong arm from right field, throwing 86, has short quick arm action with good carry through the bag.

Trevor Riggs 2014 (OF, Suffolk, VA, Nansemond River HS): Ran a 6.90 and threw 82 from the OF, has a young build, knee lift trigger, good extension out front, makes consistent contact.

Errol Robinson 2013 (MIF, Boyers, MD, St. Johns College HS): Athletic, has quick hands at the plate, makes consistent contact, line drive swing plane, makes all the plays defensively with good athletic actions on defense, can really pick it.

Will Small 2013 (RHP/OF, Atlanta, GA, Holy Innocents Episcopal HS):  Ran a 6.93 sixty, was 83 from the OF and topped out at 83 on mound with solid command, flashes solid straight change.

James Stroud 2013 (OF, Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam HS): Ran a 6.81 sixty and threw 88 from the OF has short quick arm action, ball carries well.

Pierce Suttles 2013 (C/RHP, Cornelius, NC, W A Hough HS): Good feet with a quick transfer and release behind the plate, popping a 1.93 and throwing 81 from behind plate, topped out at 83 on mound.

Carter Cunningham 2013 (INF, Farmville, VA, Fuqua School) Showed nice power stroke at plate, hitting the ball hard during BP including a home run,  has good extension.

Here is a quick look at some of the top players that stood out during the Atlantic Coast Top Prospect showcase in Greensboro NC. Players are in no particular order.

Hunter Smith 2012 (C/RHP, Whiteville, NC, East Columbus HS): Popped a 1.97 and threw 75 from behind the plate, has a line drive swing plane and quick bat, sat in the mid 80’s topping at 86.

Colin Lawless 2012 (C/OF, Midlothian, VA, James River HS): Solid catch and throw skills, popping a 1.89, has nice swing plane with lift, makes consistent contact at plate.

Colin Gibbons-Fly 2012, (MIF, Midlothian, VA, DeMatha Catholic HS): Clean fielding mechanics, comes through nicely, ball carries, throwing 84 across mound, has easy swing with bat speed.

Aaron Flannagan, 2012, (C/OF, Suffolk, VA, Isle of Wight Academy): Good arm strength (86-OF), 1.97, and 78 from behind plate, also showed pop from the right side hitting a long home run during BP and centering up consistently.

Tyler Yeatts, 2012, (OF/RHP, Richmond VA, St. Christophers School): Strong arm from the OF throwing 88 from right field, has solid fielding actions also, shows good bat speed at plate and makes consistent contact, topped at 83 on mound.

Brandon Light,  2012, (OF, Chesterfield, VA, Cosby HS): Good athletic actions from OF, ball comes out clean and online, hit 84 from OF, has line drive swing with extension through swing.

Dustin Garst, 2012, (C, RHP, Salem, VA, Churchland HS): Popped a 1.91 and 75 from behind the plate using good balance and online throws to second, makes solid contact at the plate.

Tyler Carroll, 2012 (MIF/OF, Oakton, VA, Oakton HS): Ran a 6.95 sixty, solid MIF actions, has quick release, makes good contact and has nice line drive swing.

Tyler Bullard, 2012, (OF, King, NC, West Stokes HS): Ran a 6.79 sixty, has strength in swing, ball jumps off bat when centered up.

John Hlavinka, 2012, (C/OF, Venetia, PA, Peters Township HS) Ran a 6.90 sixty and popped a 2.03 with good feet and accurate throws to second.

Skylar Hunter, 2012, (C/RHP, Hanahan, SC, Hanahan HS) Athletic presence on field, popped a 1.82 and threw 78 from behind the plate, showed his arm strength sitting in the 85-87 range topping at 88, line drive swing plane with good bat speed.

Ryan McGrath, 2012, (RHP, Troy NY, Lansingburgh HS): Solid pitching frame, high ¾ arm slot, sat in the 82-84 range topping at 84, also flashed a nice change up.

Bryan Drager, 2012, (RHP, Centreville, VA, Westfield HS): ¾ arm slot, sits mid 80’s topping at 86 with hard riding life, shows a curveball at 71-73 with good down break and has potential to be plus pitch.

Jered Gesell, 2012, (RHP, High Point NC, High Pont Christian Academy): Long lean build with room to fill out, sat comfortably in the 85-87 range, has a high ceiling on mound.


 
Saturday, August 6

Will Small (2013, RHP, Holy Innocents Episcopal HS, Atlanta, GA) had his fastball sitting at 80-82mph while it was topping out at 83mph with a changeup that topped out at 74 and his curveball touching 74mph. Small has a short arm action, with a high 3/4 arm angle, a good feel for his changeup, good command of his fastball which he locates all over the zone, his curveball has an 11-5 break to it, the ball comes out clean, and he has a deceptively quick fastball.

Matthew Howell (2015, OF, Westchester Country Day HS, Jamestown, NC) had 3 hits and a stolen base in the game for Team Purple this afternoon. Howell has a large frame with a good build; he has a rotational swing, makes solid contact at the plate, puts the ball in play with regularity, is willing to go the other way and has a good line drive swing.

John Booker (2013, SS, Home Educated, Chesterfield, VA) went 2-3 in the game with a triple to help Team Purple this afternoon. Booker has a good build with a large frame, a rotational swing, is able to make adjustments at the plate, has quick hands, has some pop in his bat, and has good speed on the bases.

Ryan Ahlum (2013, MIF, Myers Park HS, Charlotte, NC) was 2-3 in the game as well for Team Purple. Ahlum has a medium build, with good bat speed, makes consistent contact with the ball, gets decent extension at the plate, he makes solid contact with the ball, has an aggressive approach at the plate, will go with the pitch and hustles on the bases. 

Parker Kelly (2013, OF, First Flight HS, Kitty Hawk, NC) was 2-3 in the game with 3 stolen bases and 1 double in the game for Team Royal today. Kelly has a toe-tap trigger, makes good contact when he centers up the ball, gets his hands through, and has gap power.

Trevor Riggs (2014, OF, Nansemond River HS, Suffolk, VA) also had 2 hits for Team Royal with 4 stolen bases in the game. Riggs has an aggressive approach at the plate, with good speed down the line, and has a fluid stroke.

Errol Robinson (2013, MIF, St. Johns College HS, Boyers, MD) collected 3 hits in the game for Team Royal as well as getting 4 RBI'S. Robinson has an athletic build, with an easy swing, has good weight transfer, a line drive swing plane, and has good speed on the bases. Robinson has smooth actions in the field, makes things look easy, has a quick transfer with soft hands.

Zachary Jarrett (2013, SS, Hickory HS, Hickory, NC) had 2 hits in the game for Team Royal with a stolen base and a double. Jarrett has a good frame with a strong build, a line drive swing with lift, makes good solid contact, and has good bat speed, with a live bat.

Jared Gesell (2012, RHP, High Point Christian Academy, High Point, NC) sat at 85-86mph while topping out at 87mph on his fastball with his curveball topping out at 65mph, and a changeup that touched 73mph. Gesell uses a low 3/4 arm angle, with a loose medium arm action, a good downward plane, with a good arm. Gesell has some arm side run to his fastball with some sink as well, a good 12-6 curveball that has good spin and depth to it, with lots of movement on all his pitches.

Bryan Drager (2012, RHP, Westfield HS, Centreville, VA) sat at 83-85mph with his fastball topping out at 86mph while his changeup topped out at 74mph, and his curveball touching 65mph. Drager has a medium athletic build, with a 3/4 arm slot, short arm action, and decent arm speed. Drager has a fastball that has good life and will ride in on hitters, an 11-5 curveball, an online delivery, he attacks hitters, and throws strikes.

John Hlavinka (2012, C, Peters Township HS, Venetia, PA) was 2-3 in the game for Tea Orange with a couple of singles and 1 stolen base. Hlavinka has a rotational swing, with  decent bat speed, a line drive swing plane with lift, and puts the ball in play with regular contact.

Samuel Hanke (2012, C, Loyola Blakefield HS, Kingsville, MD) had 2 hits with 2 RBI's in the game for Team Black this morning. Hanke is a contact hitter with decent bat speed, stays on the ball, and has a rotational swing.

Collin Lawless (2012, C, James River HS, Midlothian, VA) was 2-3 in the game for Team Black with 2 RBI'S and 1 double. Lawless gets the barrel on the ball, has a line drives swing plane with lift, he makes hard contact, has good bat speed, and a rotational swing.

Brett Johnson (2012, 1B, St. Anne's Belfeld HS, Charlottesville, VA) had a couple of hits for Team Black as well. Johnson has an athletic strong frame, with decent bat speed, a rotational swing, makes consistent contact with the ball, and has some pop in his bat.

Black Team Hitters

Aaron Flanagan (2012, C, Isle of Wright Academy, Suffolk, VA) had a good showing in batting practice. Flanagan has a big strong build, with an aggressive swing from the right side, with good bat speed, a line drive swing with lift to it, the ball jumps off his bat, and he showed good power at the plate hitting a long home run to left field.

Timothy Thomas (2012, SS, Surry County HS, Surry, VA) had a good showing as well in batting practice. Thomas has an athletic frame, with decent bat speed, goes up the middle, has a nice easy smooth swing, he has some lift in his swing, and is able to make constant contact at the plate.

Clay Bruce (2012, OF, Charlotte Christian HS, Charlotte, NC) was able to shine in batting practice as well. Bruce has a wide base with a high hand set at the pate, an aggressive approach at the plate, he makes very consistent contact at the plate, he has a line drive swing with some lift to it, and his bat has some pop in it.

Orange Team Hitters

Tyler Yeatts (2012, OF, St. Christophers School, Richmond, VA) had a good day during batting practice. Yeatts has a toe-tap trigger with a rotational swing at the plate, has good bat speed, he makes solid contact at the plate and is a gap to gap hitter with some pop in his bat.

Tyler Carroll (2012, MIF, Oakton HS, Oakton, VA) uses a toe-tap trigger just as his teammate Tyler Yeatts does. Carroll has a low hand set, with a line drive swing, with decent bat speed, a fluid swing, and he makes good contact with some pop in his bat. 

Ryan McGrath (2012, RHP/1B, Lansingburgh HS, Troy, NY) was one of the few guys to hit a Home Run in batting practice today. McGrath gets good extension out front, has a line drive swing with raw power, decent bat speed, and has a fluid stroke at the plate.

Purple Team Hitters

Reed Rohlman (2013, OF, Byrnes HS, Moore, SC) had a god showing in batting practice for the Purple Team. Rohlman has a thin athletic build with decent bat speed, he makes consistent contact at the plate, and he hits the ball to all fields.

Cater Cunningham (2013, 3B, Fuqua School, Farmville, VA) put on a display in batting practice including hitting a Home Run. Cunningham has a strong athletic frame, who makes solid contact at the plate, gets the barrel on the ball, gets good extension out front, with decent bat speed at the plate.

Royal Team Hitters

Errol Robinson (2013, MIF, St. Johns College HS, Boyers, MD) was able to make good contact in batting practice today. Robinson has an athletic build with a loose easy swing,  good bat speed, has a good transfer, with a line drive swing plane, he is a pull hitter who but does have the ability to go with a pitch to right field.

Zachary Jarrett (2013, SS, Hickory HS, Hickory, NC) had a good showing in batting practice as well. Jarrett has a good strong build, with a line drive swing with some lift in it, he makes solid contact when he centers up on the ball, with decent bat speed.

Carter Cunningham (2013, 3B, Fuqua School, Farmville, VA) continued his day after hitting a Home Run in batting practice going 2-3 in the game with a double for the Purple Team. Cunningham has a solid build, who makes strong contact at the plate, gets good extension out front, has some pop in the bat, and is able to get the barrel of the bat on the ball.

Ryne Sigmon (2013, MIF, Hargrave Military Academy, Danville, VA) also had a couple of hits in the game for Team Purple. Sigmon is a switch hitting middle infielder who gets god extension out front, has an athletic build, and is a leadoff type hitter who puts the ball in play. In the field Sigmon has good smooth actions, soft hands, and is able to make plays on the move.

Harris Yett (2014, C, South Mecklenburg HS, Charlotte, NC) was able to get a couple of hits as well for the Purple Team. Yett has a rotational swing, with some bat speed, and makes consistent hard contact at the plate.

Reed Hayes (2013, RHP, Science Hill HS, Johnson City, TN) pitched two innings for the Purple Team topping out at 84mph while sitting at 81-83mph with his curveball touching 71mph. Hayes has a good frame, uses a 3/4 arm slot, with a balanced delivery, and gets good uses of his legs on the mound. Hayes also has a good feel for his 12-6 curveball with good depth to it, attacks hitters, and was able to keep hitters off balance.

Trevor Riggs (2014, OF, Nansemond River HS, Suffolk, VA) was able to get a couple of hits for Team Orange to go along with a stolen base this afternoon. Riggs has a good build, with an aggressive approach at the plate, has a fluid stroke at the plate, and makes good contact with the ball.

Errol Robinson (2013, MIF, St. John's College HS, Boyers, MD) had a hit in the game as well for Team Orange. Robinson has an athletic build, with a loose easy swing, good bat speed, a line drive swing plane, gets good weight transfer at the plate and has good instincts as well as good speed on the bases which he showed on his two stolen bases this afternoon.

Skylar Hunter (2012, RHP, Hanahan HS, Hanahan, SC) sat at 84-87mph while topping out at 88mph on his fastball with a curveball that was touching 72mph this afternoon. Hunter has a short arm action, has good life to his fastball, with a sharp 12-6 breaking curveball which he has good command of. Hunter struck out 3 batters and allowed no runs during his 2 innings of work.
 
Travis Lange (2012, RHP, Thousand Oaks HS, Thousand Oaks, CA) started the game for Team Orange and allowed 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 7 in the game. Lange has his fastball top out at 84mph while sitting at 81-83 with a curveball that touches 67mph a changeup that topped out at 73mph and a slider that topped out at 76mph. Lange uses a long arm action, has an online delivery, and has an extended release. Lange's curveball has an 11-5 rotation to it, with some tight spin to it, and a good feel for his changeup.

Kenneth Pope (2012, RHP/3B, North Davidson HS, Lexington, NC) went 3-3 in the game for Team Orange to help lead his team this afternoon, Pope doubled and scored in the 2nd inning. Pope has a line drive swing plane, makes solid contact with the ball; he has a consistent swing with lift in his swing.

Hunter Smith (2012, RHP, Whiteville HS, Whiteville, NC) topped out at 86mph while sitting at 82-84mph with his curveball topping out at 76mph. Smith has a short arm action, uses a 3/4 arm slot, he has good balance on the mound, gets out front on his release, with a heavy fastball and an 11-5 break on his curveball.
