10/25/2010 9:06:40 AM

Sidearming RHP Dylan Dickens shut out FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team on 4 hits to send the Dirtbags to a championship game matchup against Chet Lemon's Juice.  Dickens had served as the Dirtbags closer earlier in the tournament, finishing up 3 games with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, although none were save situations.  Dickens is well short of overpowering, as his fastball tops out at 80 mph, but his deceptive release point and big sweeping 65 mph curveball kept Mizuno's sluggers consistently off balance and reaching for pitches.

The Dirtbags threatened consistently throughout the game but left 9 runners on base against 3 Mizuno pitchers.  The scraped across a run in the top of the 6th inning when a "swinging bunt" by CF Seth Constable with the bases loaded scored SS Mikal Hill with the game's only run.

10/25/2010 8:41:35 AM

2005 co-champion Chet Lemon's Juice booked a spot in the 2010 WWBA World Championship game with a convincing 8-0 win over Canes Baseball.

RHP Thomas Renda threw a 1 hit shutout over 5 innings in the run rule victory, his second run rule 1 hit shutout of the event.  Renda was hardly overpowering, pitching exclusively with an 83-84 mph fastball and throwing a single change up and no breaking balls during the game, but his fastball command was outstanding.

The game was close through 3 innings, with the Juice hanging to a 1-0 lead before erupting for 7 runs in the 4th inning.  A 2 run pinch hit double by LHP/1B Corey Stump, followed by a run scoring triple by 2B George Ragsdale, were the key hits in the inning.

The Orioles Scout Team defeated the Diamond Devils 4-1 Sunday afternoon to create on of the closest pool play finishes in WWBA history.  Three teams in Pool O finished with identical 3-1 records, the Orioles, the Diamond Devils and the Syracuse Sports Zone Chiefs.  The first tie breaker in such a situation without a clear head to head winner is total runs allowed.  However, all 3 teams allowed the identical total of 7 runs.  The next tie breaker is total runs scored, which gave the advantage to the Chiefs by a 25 to 22 (Diamond Devils) to 19 (Orioles) margin.

LHP's Shawn Morimando and David Yakopec combined to hold the Diamond Devils offense to 6 hits and a single run.  Morimondo topped out at 91 mph on his fastball but still has some work to do with his off speed stuff.  Yakopec didn't throw as hard, topping at 86 mph, but has a nice curveball/change up combo.  Each 2011 grad was effective with his different stuff.

RHP Jose Fernandez of FTB put on one of the most impressive pitching displays seen at this or any WWBA World Championship, throwing a complete game 2-hit shutout with no walks and 6 strikeouts.  The big Cuban touched 96-97 mph frequently in the early innings and didn't throw a pitch under 93 until the final inning.  His final pitch was 96 mph.  Even with that velocity, his fastball was probably the 3rd most notable part of Fernandez's performance.  His low 80's slider was a present plus big league level pitch at times with outstanding depth and his command of both pitches impeccable.  In fact, Fernandez didn't walk a hitter in 10 innings of work during the championship.

Dallas sent 3 pitchers to the mound to try and slow down the FTB juggernaut, all armed with fastballs of at least 88 MPH, including starter RHP John Curtiss who topped out at 93 mph. Not a one of them could slow the offensive machine.

SS Francisco Lindor (2011), 3B Javier Baez (2011) and C Tyler Marlette (2011) all had multi-hit efforts. Lindor also Doubled, Walked and Stole a Base. CF Dominic Jose (2011) stole a pair of bases, including home in the 2nd and drove in a run.

SS Trevor Story (2011) and CF Josh Bell (2011) each picked up a hit for the Dallas Patriots in the loss and both have the tools to excel at LSU next season, where both are committed...if MLB teams do not have other plans for the. FTB will take on San Gabriel Valley Arsenal in the 2nd round.

RHP Kyle Funkhouser (2012) stole the show in a game that featured plenty of pitching talent. The young righty allowed just one hit over 4 shutout innings and topped out at 92 MPH.

The 6' 2" 187 lb. righty from Oak Forrest, IL throws from a High 3/4 arm slot, working downhill with a smooth easy delivery and mixed in a plus Slider that sat between 79-81. Funkhouser still has room to grow on his long athletic frame and projects to continue to increase his velocity.

RHP Brandon Colbreth (2011) was up to 91 for the Dirtbags and mixed in a hard 11-5 Curveball at 77. Teammate RHP Keaton Hack (2012) was up to 88 with a tight 12-6 Curve at 74 MPH.

RHP Charlie Naso (2011) got the Win in relief for Bo Jackson with 2 innings of work. Naso was up to 87 MPH and allowed just one hit. Naso has a strong build with good athleticism, hides the ball well and worked in a big 11-5 Curveball and solid arm speed on the Changeup. RF Mariano Long (2012) showed good bat speed in a 1-for-3 effort, squaring up balls that registered at 87 and 88 MPH off the bat in each of his first two trips to the plate.

Pitching has been the hallmark of the Juice team all tournament, as it usually is, as the team allowed only 1 run in their 4 pool play games.

Palm Beach Select survived numerous Ontario Blue Jays threats to pull out a 6-5 win Saturday night.  The Blue Jays left 14 men on base in 7 innings, including at least one in every inning.

Ontario left the bases loaded in both of the first 2 innings against Palm Beach starter Nico Slater.  Slater showed impressive stuff, topping out at 91 mph, but walked 6 of the 12 hitters he faced before being pulled in the second inning.

Palm Beach also stranded their share of runners, leaving 9 runners on base.  They received contributions from from literally everyone in their lineup, as 10 players had base hits and another scored 2 runs after drawing 2 walks.

2012 lefty Bradley Emery got the win for Palm Beach, working out of Slater's 2nd inning jam and settling in to pitch 3 2/3 strong innings of relief.  Emery, who attends Dwyer HS literally right down the street from the Jupiter complex, topped out at 84 mph and showed a loose quick arm.

LHP Andrew Chin, EH/CF John Norwood and RF Zach Blanden played key roles in Syracuse Sports Zone Chief's 5-2 win over the Orioles Scout Team Satruday afternoon.

Chin threw 6 shutout innings to set the tone for Syracuse.  The 2011 southpaw struck out 8 hitters, working primarily with a 86-90 mph fastball from a mid 3/4's release point that had excellent movement at times.  Chin's challenge as a pitcher has always been to develop a better breaking ball and he showed flashes with a 80-82 mph slider.

Blanden reached base 3 times from the #2 spot in the order, twice on base hits, and scored 2 runs.  The 5-9 left handed hitter showed very good speed and base running instincts and also made an outstanding diving catch in the 5th inning to stop a potential Orioles rally.

Norwood is an outstanding athlete who was very impressive during the summer at numerous major events.  He has a mature, polished approach at the plate and very good bat speed.  He went 3-4 yesterday.

Orioles 1B Dennis Mitchell spoiled the Syracuse shutout with a long home run to right field in the 7th inning.

Davies is also a big young man at 6-4, 230 lbs.  He threw a big tailing 80 mph fastball to the corners and a downer curveball in the upper 60's.

10/24/2010 6:04:30 AM

LHP Matt Lees and RHP Bobby Ruse combined on a 3-hit shutout Saturday afternoon to lead Orioles Scout Team to a 3-0 win over the MSL All-Stars.  Interestingly, if you take away the first 3 MSL hitters of the game the duo combined for a no-hitter, as the first 3 hitters in the MSL lineup singled in the first inning but MSL didn't score after one runner was picked off.

Lees, a 6-0 senior from Richmond, VA, topped out at 85 mph but his out pitch was a big, deep curveball around 70 mph that he commanded with precision in working 4 innings.  Ruse, a 6-2 senior from Harford, MD, took more of a power approach to retiring 9 straight hitters, 5 on strikeouts.  Ruse has a deceptive delivery and pounded the strike zone with a 86-89 mph fastball.

6-3, 230 lb first baseman Dennis Mitchell continued his hot hitting with a leadoff triple in the 2nd inning and scored the first Orioles run.  Mitchell has big left handed power and has consistently hit well at WWBA events this year.

SS Mikal Hill continued his outstanding play for the Dirtbags, going 3-4 at the plate and driving in 3 runs.  Hill could be a very strong MVP candidate if he continues his fine play both offensively and defensively and the Dirtbags make a run deep into the playoffs.

C Connor "D.C." Andrus is also having a very strong tournament for the Dirtbags and went 2-3 with an Rbi in addition to handling Jernigan and Dickens well.

Glenn, a 6-4 senior, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2.  He relied primarily on a 87-90 mph fastball that he spotted well on the outside corner of the plate.  His curveball flashed plus spin in warmups but was inconsistent against hitters.

Fria accounted for 4 of those Rbi's on one swing with a Grand Slam home run to punctuate Central Florida's 8 run 6th inning and ended up 2-3, with 5 Rbi's.  Conde, who has been a consistently high level performer at PG/WWBA events throughout the last year, went a perfect 4-4 with a double and triple and scored 3 times.  Okey got into the act with a 2 run single in the 6th inning and finished 2-3.

Baseball U won all but the first 3 batters in the first inning but it wasn't enough to defeat the Ohio Warhawks in a hard fought game Saturday morning.

The Warhawks got a single, triple and double by CF Brett Bell, 2B Jake Hager and DH Greg Bird respectively as the first 3 hitters in the first inning to account for both Ohio runs.  They were then shutout by Baseball U LHP Javier Reynoso for the rest of the way.  The 2011 southpaw allowed only 4 hits and no walks the rest of the way, working at 85-88 mph with a nice mid 70's slurve.

Four Warhawks pitchers combined on a 3 hitter, holding the top 4 hitters in the Baseball U lineup to a combined 1-12 performance.  2011 RHP Eric Holdren and 2013 LHP Stephen Gonsalves were especially impressive in the middle innings.  Holdren retired 6 straight hitters over 2 innings, 3 on strikeouts, while pitching at 88-89 with a 12/6 72 mph curve.  The 6-4 Gonsalves, one of the top sophomores in the country, has smooth pitching mechanics and sat at 88 mph with his fastball for 2 easy innings of work.

The Dallas Patriots have clinched the playoff spot in Pool G by virtue of the Ohio Warhawks 2-1 win over Baseball U.  The Patriots are 3-0 with one game remaining in pool play and hold a 7-4 win over the Warhawks, the only team that could potentially tie them at 3-1.

10/23/2010 11:06:01 AM

Team Mizuno Puerto Rico clinched a playoff berth with a 5-3 victory over Miami PG Maroon.  Mizuno is now 3-0 in pool play but has already defeated the only team that could potentially tie them, the Dallas Yankees, with one game remaining to play.

Mizuno went down to the final at bat to beat Miami, getting an Rbi single from DH Harold Diaz in the top of the 7th inning to drive in C Michael Perez, who had doubled to start the inning.  Perez is a very interesting 2011 catching prospect with outstanding arm strength that resulted in a couple of 1.95 - 2.00 game pop times.  He's a free swinger at the plate who got himself out on pitches out of the strike zone but has strength and looseness in his swing and some present bat speed.

10/23/2010 9:51:40 AM

LHP Brendan Giovannotto and RHP Geoff DeGroot combined on a 4 hit shutout with 10 K's to lead PG Orange to a 4-0 win over the Bellaire Off-Season Cardinals.

Giovannotto, a junior, threw the first four innings, allowing all the Bellaire hits.  He pitched in the low 80's and depended on a mid 70's slider as his out pitch.  DeGroot finished up with 3 hitless innings, striking out 5.  He touched 85 mph from a low 3/4's slinging arm action and his hard moving fastball got on hitter's hands quickly.

10/23/2010 9:43:58 AM

BigStix Gamers RHP Wade Palmer (2011 Fayetteville, GA) pitched a five-inning one-hitter for a 12-0 win over the Miami PG Maroon squad Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, two Gamers went 2-for-3. 2B Jeried Woods (Zebulon, GA) hit two singles and showed a nice line-drive swing path and flat bat through the zone. RF Chris Long (2011 Zebulon, GA) managed a RBI double and a RBI single, showing solid contact at the plate.

10/23/2010 9:38:40 AM

CF Josh Bell continued to leave his mark on these championships, going 2-3 with a double and 3-run home run, driving in 5 runs total, to lead the Dallas Patriots to a 10-0 run rule victory over Sandlot/Midwest Scout Team.  Bell is a 5-tool type athlete and switch-hitter who one scout compared physically to the Orioles all-star CF Adam Jones.  His thus far dominant performance here in Jupiter has been extra important to scouts, as Bell missed most of the summer showcase circuit with a leg injury.

LSU commit SS Trevor Story also continued his strong play, going 1-3 with a double and 2 Rbi's.  Story has one of the best arms in the 2011 class at shortstop and has been up into the mid 90's in rare appearances on the mound.

LHP Kyle Bailey threw a 3 hit shutout over 5 innings for the Patriots to pick up the win.  Bailey has a simple, effective delivery and a nice combination of an 84 mph fastball and 72 mph change up, along with a 69 mph curveball, to keep hitters off balance.

10/23/2010 9:33:51 AM

1B Sean Cramer (2011 Seffner, FL) and CF Tommy Joyce (2011 Sewell, NJ) both recorded multiple hits in a 10-2 South Bergen win over the PG NE Purple squad Saturday morning.

RHP Mike Daley (2011 Sommerville, NJ) topped out at 86 mph for the Mets during a two-inning relief appearance. Daley showed good arm speed, a direct and inline delivery, and good use of his lower half.
10/23/2010 9:25:04 AM

2011 RHP Daniel Concepcion threw a complete game 4 hit shutout for Puerto Rico Baseball Academy to down Kentucky Baseball Club 2-0.  The 6-4, 195 lb righty struck out 7 hitters, showing a very polished approach to pitching.  Concepion mixed up 4 pitches, an 82-86 mph fastball, a curveball, slider and change up, from an overhand release point and only walked 2 Kentucky hitters.

2012 SS Will Hurt was the only hitter who solved Concepcion, going 3-3 from his leadoff spot and showing a very balanced and quick swing.  Hurt's speed and defensive tools at shortstop also stood out and he appears to be a young middle infield prospect to follow very closely.

Three Kentucky pitchers combined on a 2 hitter and both Puerto Rico runs scored without benefit of a hit and were unearned.  RHP Matt Spalding made his second 2 inning relief appearance of the event and while he didn't throw the 93/94's he did on Friday, he was 89-91 and struck out 3 hitters in 2 innings.

RHP Jamie Cyr (2011 Palm Bay, FL) touched 85 in relief, showing a simple delivery, a loose arm, and nice downhill actions.
10/23/2010 9:15:03 AM

The Diamond Devils took advantage of 8 walks and 2 hit by pitches to record an 11-3 win over the MSL All-Stars.  SS T.J. Costen and C Grayson Geiner each drove home 2 runs for the Diamond Devils.  RHP Brandon Hester got the win, retiring 9 straight hitters to start the game, 6 on strike outs, before being relieved to start the 4th inning.  Hester is a 6-7, 190 lb junior who has very nice feel for an 83-87 mph fastball and commands it well to both sides of the plate.  He'll have to tighten up his curveball in the future but he's very projectable and already knows how to pitch.

DH/C Hunter Lockwood had a strong game at the plate for MSL, just missing an opposite field home run in one at bat that drifted foul and slamming a 2 run triple off the left centerfield fence in his other at bat.  Lockwood has been consistently impressive with his bat speed and power potential at PG/WWBA events all year.

10/23/2010 9:04:51 AM

LHP Carlos Rodon (2011 Holly Springs, NC) pitched three outstanding innings for the Royals Baseball Club in a 8-1 win over the NJ Twins Saturday morning.

CF Roman Quinn (2011 Port St. Joe, FL) went 2-for-4 with a single and a double and stayed inside the ball well to hit to the opposite field. He also flashed some speed.

Meanwhile, NJ Twins RHP Evon Previte (2011 Raritan, NJ) touched 87 mph, showing an inline finish and good balance in his delivery. RHP Charlie Gaines (2011 Phoenix, MD) hit 86 and showed some arm speed, normal effort, and a 71-mph curve with nice break.

Baseball U. outhit the South Florida PG Kelly Green 9-5  but left 9 runners on base in 5 innings and settled for a 6-6 time rule shortened tie Satruday morning.

The big and intimidating middle of the Baseball U.  lineup was again effective, as RF Mike Papi, DH/1B Keon Barnum and XH/C Chris Harvey combined to go 4-7 with 3 runs scored and 4 Rbi's, including a double and triple.   Barnum and Harvey are 2 of the most impressive 2012 hitting prospects in the country and look the part, with Barnum weighing in at 6-4, 220 lbs and Harvey listed at 6-4, 215 lbs.

South Florida RHP Chuckie Lopez (2012 Pembroke Pines, FL) impressed as well, topping out at 87 and showing a long, loose, and quick arm, good command of all his pitches, and solid, repeatable form.

LHP Andre Martinez (2012 Pembroke Pines, FL) sat between 84-86 during his two innings of relief work, allowing only two hits and showing a long and loose arm, a repeatable delivery, and good command.
10/23/2010 8:30:29 AM

RHP Luke Weaver faced only 2 batters over the minimum in shutting out the previously undefeated St. Louis Pirates Saturday morning, 3-0.  Weaver, a 6-2 senior who is committed to Florida State, allowed singles in the 2nd and 7th innings while striking out 8 hitters.  The Pirates had scored 20 runs in their previous 3 games.

Weaver worked in the 88-91 mph range with a very hard consistent late movement.  His upper 70's slider is a big breaking out pitch and he occasionally mixed in a 79 mph change up.  Weaver was in complete of both sides of the plate the entire game.

Pirates starter LHP Bryant Holtmann threw well for 4 innings but was let down by his defense, allowing 3 unearned runs.  The 6-5 southpaw topped out at 88 mph, pitching mostly with his fastball and showing very good command.

FTB Mizuno brought out some of the big weapons Friday night in their 8-2 win over the Mid-Atlantic Rookies.  The game was perhaps the most heavily scouted of the tournament thus far, as there were only 4 games being played under the lights at the 7:40 pm time slot.  Golf carts were lined up foul pole to foul pole and navigating the traffic jam behind home plate was worse than rush hour.

The game got off to a strange beginning, as Mizuno starter RHP Hudson Boyd was forced to leave the game after 2 pitches (92 and 94 mph) when he injured his left shoulder fielding a bunt leading off the bottom of the 1st inning.  That forced Mizuno to bring in Aflac All-American LHP Henry Owens, the 2009 Jupiter Most Valuable Pitcher, who was more than up to the task.  Owens threw 3 2/3 hitless innings, striking out 7 hitters, in a dominating performance.  The 6-7 Owens appears to hand his 90-91 mph fastball to the catcher at times with his extra long arms.

The Mizuno bats broke out after a slow start at the tournament.  3B Javier Baez went 3-4 with a triple and 2 Rbi's to key the offense out of the #2 slot in the line up.  1B Dan Vogelbach crushed a triple to RCF and reached base all 4 times at bat.  LF Dante Bichette had a couple of hits, including a absolute bullet ground rule double that was 101 mph off the bat.

RHP John Taylor started for Mid Atlantic and went 4 solid innings, allowing 3 runs while showing an 88-91 mph fastball and a snappy 76 mph curveball.

The Orioles Scout Team scored 9 runs in the 4th inning to coast to a 10-1 run rule victory over PG Teal Friday night.  The Orioles only managed 2 hits and 1 run in their other 4 at bats but that one inning was more than enough.

C Stephen Perez and LF A.J. Lardo each had triples in the big inning.

2011 RHP Andrew Flaherty went 3 shutout innings to get the win, striking out 7 hitters with a mid 80's fastball and hard 76 mph curveball.  2012 LHP John Allen (6-4, 180, Creedmoor, NC) stood out for his arm strength in relief, touching 87 mph with an effortless arm action and release.  Allen has a few balance/pace issues to work out with his delivery but is a young southpaw to follow carefully.

One game slot after Team British Columbia upset the ABD Bulldogs, the Ontario Blue Jays made it two straight notable victories Friday night by downing Marucci Elite 7-5.

The game was a see saw affair that didn't stand out for its clean, crisp play, as both pitching staffs walked 7 hitters and were consistently working in and out of jams.  As an indicator, perhaps the two most important offensive players for the Blue Jays were C Justin Marra and RF Alex Kupchak, who went a combined 0-0 in 6 at bats with 4 walks, a hit by pitch and a Sac Fly that accounted for 3 runs scored and 2 Rbi's.

2011 RHP Wes Wisler started and went 3 2/3 innings for Marucci, working at 88-91 mph with a big breaking mid 70's curveball that could be a plus pitch with a more consistent release point and better command.

2012 RHP Walker Buehler (Lexington, KY) was notable in relief, showing 3 nice pitches in a 86-89 mph fastball, a big 78 mph curveball and a fading 80 mph change up.  The 6-1, 150 lb Buehler has a fast arm and a sound delivery.

The Houston Heat knocked out 11 hits and cruised to a 8-2 win over PG Canada in one of the late games Friday night.

C Cole Lankford (2011, Houston) went 2-4 with a double and a couple of runs scored.  Lankford is a 6-1, 195 right handed hitter with very good strength and present bat speed and has sound hitting mechanics.  Interestingly, Lankford has started both Heat games behind the plate while Aflac All-American C/RHP Daniel Mengden has been playing left field.  Mengden, a very good all around athlete, was 1-2 with a walk, sacrifice fly and 2 Rbi's in the game.

2011's RHP Joe Kirkland and LHP Austin Fairchild both threw well for the Heat.  Kirkland started and went 3 shutout innings, striking out 7 Canada hitters. He has a well balanced slow paced delivery with a long extended arm action and was 87-90 mph with a hard breaking downer curveball at 74 mph.   Fairchild struck out 5 in 2 1/3 innings of work, working at 87-89 mph with a 75 mph curveball.  Fairchild will have to work on his delivery, as he walked 4 hitters and was wild all over the zone, but he has plenty of arm strength and deception.

EH/C Spencer Angelis and 1B Sikes Orvis showed their power in leading the Orlando Scorpions to a 8-2 win over the PG White team.  Angelis stroked a 2 run double in the first inning after singles by 3B Sean Trent and CF Austin Bousfield opened the inning.  The left handed hitting Orvis followed with a bomb deep to right field to make the score 4-0.  Angelis later added another double and Rbi in the 5th inning and popped a 2.00 game throw as well.

Catching is not a position that the Scorpions are short of.  Angelis is a primary catcher hitting 3rd in the line up, Orvis is a secondary catcher in the cleanup spot.  #5 hitter A.C. Carter is the regular Scorpions catcher and #6 hitter Blake Sydeski is also a primary catcher but playing in the outfield to get his bat in the line up.

2011 RHP Jake Herrera pitched the first 3 innings for Orlando, striking out 7 hitters, including the first 5 of the game, while allowing 1 hit.  Herrera throws from a low 3/4's release point and hard sink on his 84-87 mph fastball.  Herrera also gets very good spin on a 78 mph slider for his release point.

Shull has an easy, low effort delivery that makes his 84-86 mph fastball seem to get on hitter's hands quickly.  He also mixed in a 70 mph curveball and 71 mph change up with good sink while working consistently in the strike zone with all 3 pitches.

RF Jake Ivory continued his hot hitting for the Pirates, hitting a couple of doubles and scoring twice.  Ivory is a 6-1 right handed hitter with a very nice looking swing and good power projection.

Richmond's Kevin White went 3-3 with a stolen base.

Big 2012 RHP Karl Keglovitz (6-7, 235 lbs) threw a complete game for Syracuse, not walking a hitter and striking out 6.  Keglovitz has a quick, compact arm action for his size and pitched in the 88-90 range the entire game while topping out at 92 mph.  The Pennsylvania native has more work to do to develop his curveball or move to a slider but fastball velocity and command are not an issue.

Syracuse threatened frequently during the first 5 innings, stranding 7 runners, before breaking out for 7 hits in the 6th.  Their speedy outfield duo of CF Williams Jerez and LF John Norwood combined to go 5-8 at the plate and both got hits and scored in the big 6th inning.  Jerez is a 6-4, 190 lb left handed hitter from Brooklyn, New York, who is attending his first PG/WWBA event, showed a very nice controlled swing and some power to the opposite field along with 4.3 speed to first base.

RHP Dylan Davis started for the Yankees and the Aflac All-American was impressive, pitching in the 90-94 mph range and allowing 1 hit.  Davis did a good job locating his fastball and getting some good arm side running action, especially to left handed hitters.

Kentucky Baseball Club RHP Matt Spalding was just as impressive as Davis on the mound.  Throwing 2 innings of scoreless relief, Spalding pitched in the 92-94 mph range from a very extended high 3/4's release point that gives his pitches much more downhill angle than you would expect from a 6-0, 190 lb right hander.

Gamers RHP Rashad Billups (2011 Senoia, GA) also touched 86, flashing late drop and cut on his 76-mph change up and short break on his 72-mph curve.

LHP John Clark (2011 Duluth, GA) topped out at 85 and struck out six through 4 1/3 innings.

Florida Legends/White Sox Scout Team SS Tyler Greene (2011 Roswell, GA) and C Aramis Garcia (2012 Pembroke Pins, FL) both tallied multiple hits in a 7-6 win over the PG Canada Gold squad.

Greene went 2-for-4 with a RBI single and a double in the No. 2 spot, showing an even, line-drive swing, quick actions on defense, and solid arm strength on the field.

Meanwhile, Garcia hit a pair of doubles — one for two RBI — in his 2-for-3 effort that included a RBI sacrifice bunt. He showed an upright, quiet approach in the box and plus arm speed behind the plate, recording a 2.06 pop time in between innings.

The Legends also got a gem effort from RHP Andres Gracia (2011 Miami, FL) who pitched four scoreless innings. Gracia allowed just three hits and struck out five while touching 88 mph. He showed solid life, some effort in his delivery, good command, and a solid feel for his 76-mph slider.

Three East Coast PG Grey pitchers combined on a 1-hitter in a 3-1 over the South Florida Elite:  RHP Harlan Richter (2 innings), LHP Victor Cole (3 innings) and RHP Devin Perry (2 innings).  Perry showed the best prospect stuff of the trio, touching 90 mph with a hard breaking curveball up to 75 mph but struggled with his command at times, allowing the sole South Florida run after walking 3 hitters.

2012 RHP Dominick Mancini (Westin, FL) threw very well at times, striking out 7 hitters in 3 innings, but was hurt by his defense and allowed a couple of unearned runs in taking the loss.  Mancini pitched at 86-88 mph with a 12/6 curveball from a high 3/4's arm slot.

All-American Prospects/Indians Scout Team SS Jack Tillery (2011 Naples, FL) was the only player to record multiple hits in a 1-0 loss to the Homeplate Chilidogs Thursday afternoon.

Tillery went 2-for-3 in the No. 6 spot, hitting a single and a double off Chilidogs RHP Kevin Werner (2011 Sharpsburg, GA) who topped out at 86 mph and allowed just four hits through five innings while striking out five. Werner showed good mechanics, a good slide-step pick-off move to first, and a solid 78-mph change up.

Homeplate LHP Morgan Pittman (2011 Sharpsburg, GA) also impressed in the final two innings in which he struck out four and allowed just one hit. Pittman also showed some arm-side run on his fastball and good command on the mound.

The Prospects weren't without quality arms either, however. RHP Tanner Anderson (2011 Tampa, FL) topped out at 89 mph during his five innings of work for the Prospects. Anderson allowed just one hit and struck out four, showing good mechanics, a long, loose arm, and nice command of all three of his pitches. He flashed a 77-mph curve and a 82-mph slider in addition to his fastball.

RHP Jose Brizuela (2011 Weston, FL) also pitched well, hitting 90 through two innings. Brizuela worked quickly and threw only from the stretch.

RHP Joe Goodman (2011 Ames, IA) helped the St. Louis Pirates to a 1-0 win over the Philly Senators Thursday afternoon. Goodman only allowed two hits and struck out two through three innings, touching 87 mph in the process while showing a fast arm, a long two-piece arm action, a drop-and-drive delivery, and good pitchability. He also flashed a short, tight 76-mph curve with 12-6 spin and a good, tight 79-mph slider with downward break.

The Toronto Blue Jays have the largest amateur scouting staff in baseball and their organizational approach to scouting is very, very detailed.  That certainly shows in their approach to the WWBA World Championships this year.

Toronto has in excess of 30 scouts here in Jupiter and have rented 23 golf carts for the weekend.  Suffice to say, every player on every team, from the eventual champions to the team that doesn't win a game, will be covered by the Blue Jays.

In the first upset of the tournament, Northeast PG Purple scored a couple of unearned runs in the 3rd inning and made it stand up for a 2-1 win over Canes Baseball.

LHP Mike Gilroy (3 1/3 innings) and RHP Evan Beal (3 2/3 innings) threw plenty well enough to get the win for Canes, allowing only 4 hits and ringing up 13 strikouts.  However, 2 out singles by Northeast CF Mike Presley and EH Sam Garito came back to haunt Gilroy in the third inning when both came around to score on a double error on what should have been the third out of the inning.

The 6-5, 190 lb Beal (2011, Fairfax Station, VA) showed nice projectable stuff while striking out six hitters.  Beal pitched in the 86-88 mph range and threw a hard slider that had nice hard 2 plane action at times.

2012 CF Andrew Velazquez continued the clutch play that won him the MVP award from the WWBA Underclass World Championships 2 weeks ago, driving a 1 out double in the bottom of the 6th inning and coming around to score the only run in a 1-0 Marucci Elite win over Palm Beach Select.

Three Marucci pitchers combined on a 4 hit shutout.  2012 RHP Gabe Gunter went the first 3 innings, striking out 6 hitters with a 85-87 mph fastball and a low 70's curveball that showed very good depth at times.  Gunter, who is from Crestview, Florida, has a pro type build at 6-5, 225 lbs.

2011 LHP Henri Faucheux threw the middle 2 innings for Marucci, striking out 4 hitters and topping out at 88 mph with a very sharp downer curveball.  Fellow 2011 southpaw Art Moran-Vidrio finished up with 2 scoreless innings to get the win, also topping out at 88 mph.

RHP Cory Slater threw very well in his 2 innings of work for Palm Beach, topping out at 89 mph with a tight spinning 74 mph curveball.

FTB Mizuno has one of the most impressive lineups in Jupiter, with 3 Aflac All-Americans and a host of other top hitting prospects including 1B Dan Vogelbach and 3B Dante Bichette.

That evidently didn't intimidate RHP Kevin Elder of the Reds Midwest Scout Team.  Elder, a 6-0, 215 lb junior from Elgin, Illinois, threw a complete game 3 hit shutout at Mizuno but had to settle for a "no decision" when 3 Mizuno pitchers combined on a 1 hit shutout themselves.  Elder pitched between 85 and 90 mph on his fastball with some deception to his delivery and arm action.  His upper 70's slurve was especially snappy but he did a very mature job of throw strikes with it to spots, walking only 2 hitters while striking out 7.  With a couple of hundred scouts and college coaches watching the game, Elder is sure to get plenty of attention after his performance.

RHP Jose Fernandez started for Mizuno, throwing 4 near perfect innings, striking out 6 hitters.  Fernandez pitched in the 92-95 mph range and showed plus potential with both his slider and change up in a dominating performance.

2012 LHP Tyler Pike threw 2 2/3 innings for Mizuno and was very impressive as well, pitching in the upper 80's with good consistent spin on an upper 60's curveball.  Pike has a loose, athletic 6-1, 165 lb build and projects well.

In what has become a Jupiter tradition, Team British Columbia defeated the Ontario Blue Jays 6-2 in an exhibition game prior to the start of play today.  The two Canadian teams both come with very deep rosters to the event and the extra game not only allows them to work on a little East/West Canadian rivalry but lets them get more playing time for their young players.

2B Zach Mihic was the star for Team BC, going 3-3 with a couple of doubles and 2 Rbi's

The Dirtbags posted the first win of the championship, defeating New York PG Dark Green 9-0 in a run rule shortened game.

The North Carolina based team ran out a quartet of hard throwing right handed pitchers.  Adam Griffin started and went 3 innings, striking out 4 hitters and allowing the only NY PG hit of the game.  Griffin topped out at 91 mph with good arm side run and showed an easier delivery and better command that he showed at different times this past summer.

Jason Creasy (88-90, 74 CB), Keaton Haack (85-88, 71 CB) and Brandon Culbreth (89-91, 75 CB) finished up the last 2 innings in flawless fashion for the Dirtbags.

SS Mikal Hill was very impressive defensively for the Dirtbags, showing outstanding range up the middle and plenty of arm strength.  He also reached base 3 times via a single and 2 walks and scored a couple of runs.

It's only an hour into play at the 2010 WWBA World Championships and things look like they are in full swing.  Four games started on the blue quad fields at 3:00 pm and five more started on the red quad fields at 3:30.  There will be a total of 15 games played today, including an 8:15 pm game on the Roger Dean Stadium field between the Palm Beach PAL and the East Cobb Astros that should be an outstanding pitcher's dual between Aflac All-American RHP John Magliozzi of the Astros and RHP Kyle Smith of Palm Beach.

The big attraction for the scouts and coaches right now seems to be on field 5 on the blue quad, where FTB Mizuno is facing the Reds Midwest Scout Team.  Aflac All-American RHP Jose Fernandez started on the mound for Mizuno and has been up to 95 mph in the early going.
