Team No-Hitter in 0-0 Tie for IA Select Red >>

Gm # 2 | 9/17/2010 | 6:00 PM Minnesota Blizzard Blue vs. Iowa Select Navy

9/17/2010 9:22:27 PM

Iowa Select Red's pitching staff combined for a no hitter on Friday night against the DTA Wildcats, but got little offensive support in a 0-0 tie.  Iowa Select starter Andrew Hedrick (2011/Ankeny/Ankeny, IA) went three innings striking out seven, and turned the ball over to Braden Shull (2011/Mount Pleasant/Mount Pleasant, IA) for two innings.  Daniel Stagg (2011/Valley/West Des Moines, IA) worked the final two innings to complete the no-hitter.

Hedrick was especially dominant and showed the stuff that we've seen in the past from him.  He throws three pitches for strikes.  An 84-86mph fastball that touched 87, a big breaking 2-8 curveball that was unhittable in the low 70's, and an upper 70's changeup that shows fade and had DTA hitters way out front.  Hedrick is fun to watch and really has an idea on the mound.  Really keeps hitters guessing.

Offensively, the lone standout for the game was Iowa Select's Jacob Peter (2011/Mason City/Mason City, IA).  He really swings it well and launched a deep triple to the base of the wall at Duane Banks Field, a nearly 400' drive.  Peter is strong and has a good lefthanded swing.  The ball comes off his bat well.

Defensively, DTA's shortstop Dane Sauer (2011/West Chicago/West Chicago, IL) has very good actions and will be a guy to keep an eye on this weekend.
Hitters Open with Win >>

9/17/2010 9:12:49 PM

Cameron Roegner (Beloit, WI, Memorial HS) started for the Hitters and is one to watch. The 6'6 LHP touched 87 mph and projects for more. He did struggle with his command though.

Ben Maher (Mundelein, IL) pitched well, mixes his pitches and had good movement on his fastball and also showed a nice change and slider. He topped out at 86 mph.

Nolan Peterson (Milwaukee, WI, Marquette HS) closed it out for the Hitters and was up to 90 mph and needs to be followed. He did give up four runs but didn't get much help from his defense.

Tony Butler (Sun Prarie, WI) is a very interesting 2013 shortstop and needs to be followed closely. Hit very well going 2-3 with a double.

Alex McRae (New Berlin, WI, Eisenhower HS) had two hits including a triple.

Brendon Hayden(Twin Lakes, WI, Wilmot Union HS) and 2012 Devin Pickert (Flossmore, IL, Marian Catholic) both have interesting hitting tools.

Justin Hicks (Fowlerville, MI) started for Motor City and was up to 84 mph. Skylar Hoke (Hudsonville, MI) came in relief and was up to 86 mph. He also had a double and made a great diving play a 3B before coming in to pitch.

Larry Herron (Kalamazoo, MI, Central HS) is a bat to watch and had two hits including a double.

Blizzard Storm to Victory >>

Gm # 5 | 9/17/2010 | 8:15 PM Iowa Select Red vs. DTA Wildcats

9/17/2010 9:06:40 PM

The Minnesota Blizzard Blue defeated the Iowa Select Navy team 8-0 in a 5-inning game Friday night at Duane Banks Field at the University of Iowa.  The Blizzard rode a strong pitching performance from starter Andrew Thome (2012/Cathedral/St. Cloud, MN) who went the distance allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking none.  The 6'6" Thome has a great pitcher's frame and does a good job keeping hitters off balance with his 11-5 CB.  He throws a lot of strikes and worked at 84-86 on his fastball, touching 87.

Offensively, the Blizzard were lead by Max Murphy (2011/Robbinsdale/Robbinsdale, MN) who was 3-3 with a double and three runs scored.  Murphy really got things going offensively for the Blizzard and puts the ball in play hard consistently.  Also turning in multi-hit performances were leadoff man and shortstop Dalton Leuschke (2012/Jefferson/Alexandria, MN), Paul Voelker (2011/Wayzata/Plymouth, MN), and Colin Coan (2011/South St. Paul/Inner Grove Heights, MN).  Catcher Aaron Gretz (2011/Apple Valley/Apple Valley, MN) also showed well.  The Ohio State commit is a good defensive catcher and was 1-3 at the plate with a hard hit triple in the 5th inning.

Ean McNeal looked good in his three innings on the mound, getting the start for Iowa Select.  He touched 84 with his fastball, and turned in a line of 3IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 3K, 0BB.
