2016 National Underclass South Showcase

Orange Vs. Green Highlights >>

11/7/2016 4:08:44 AM

Benjamin Content (2018 RHP, Spring, TX) has a loose and athletic build and an easy low effort delivery that enables him to throw consistent strikes.  He worked in the 82-84 mph range with his fastball but his two best pitches were his breaking balls.  His curveball had big 12/6 shape at 72 mph and his 77 mph slider was tight and short.  He struck out six hitters in four innings.

Brett Hammit (2018 SS, Nixa, MO) hit his second home run in two games, lining a no doubt line drive home run over the left field fence.  He later came back to hit a line drive base hit to left center that had serious back spin.  The 6-2/195 Nebraska commit has some big-time bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat.

Mike (MJ) Rodriguez (2020 C, Corpus Christi, TX) also continued his impressive hitting at the showcase, lining a double into the left field corner.  He is unusually strong for a freshman and squares the ball up almost every at-bat.

Jack Merrifield (2018 3B, Prairieville, LA) showed good bat speed in lining a double up the left centerfield gap.  He also threw two scoreless innings on the mound, topping out at 84 mph with his fastball and throwing lots of quality strikes.

William Dolan (2020 SS, Sugar Land, TX) made the defensive play of the game, diving to stop a ground ball up the middle and after getting quickly to his feet firing a strike to first base for the out.

Jacob Mayo (2018 OF, West Monroe, LA) picked up a pair of singles and reached base another time on a fielding error and showed his speed well on the bases.
Purple vs. Royal Highlights >>

11/6/2016 4:25:23 PM

Brett Hammit (2018 SS, Nixa, MO) hit his second home run of the showcase, a no doubt line drive over the left field fence.  He also knocked a hard single later in the game that had severe top spin and got into left field very quickly.  The Nebraska commit has really impressed with his bat speed and ability to square the ball up.

Dawson Woods (2018 C, Corsicana, TX) had a nice game, picking up two hits, one a ringing double up the RCF gap and showing lots of bat speed with a very good swing plane.  He showed off his strong throwing arm as well.

Erick Rey (2019 SS, Oklahoma City, OK) spanked a hard double up the left centerfield gap and also showed athleticism and range at third base defensively.

Steven Beard (2018 LHP, The Woodlands, TX) is a primary pitcher but can swing the bat, too.  He had about as opposite of two doubles as a hitter can have.  The left handed hitter just missed a home run off the top of the right field fence one at-bat, then came back to dump a ball down the left field line for another double the next time up.

Nick Duran (2018 C, Cleburne, TX) was right on the ball all day, hitting a couple of line drive singles and fouling some balls hard off, too.  He showed defensive versatility in the field defensively and has a quick release in the middle infield.

Cade Sitka (2019 RHP, Richmond, TX) threw four hitless innings, striking out four hitters with a 84-86 mph fastball that occasionally topped out 87 and he filled up the zone with strikes.  He's a strong young man for a sophomore and used his lower half and core well in his delivery.

John Dominguez (2018 RHP, Leander, TX) has a slender 6-0/150 build but his arm is easy and smooth, enabling him to throw in the 82-84 mph range with more there as he gets stronger.  Both his curveball and change up were quality pitches.

 >>

11/6/2016 1:35:07 PM

Brock Burling (2018 RHP, Omaha, NE) extremely long and projectable build and pitched well. Threw from an extended 3/4 arm slot with a fastball that worked up to 85 mph with plane to the lower third. He also showed a curveball with depth.

CJ Horn (2018 C, San Antonio, TX) tripled to the opposite field with a short, compact swing. He did well to keep his hands inside with a sound approach and a smooth plane through the zone.

Holden Lane (2018 RHP, Groves, TX) showed very impressive strength through the point of contact with an opposite field triple in game. He drove the ball well with a compact hand path and line drive plane.

Shane Reynolds (2020 2B, Plano, TX) worked two clean and efficient innings pitching to contact. His fastball worked in the mid 70's showing slight cut. He worked well through the ball and also mixed in a big breaking ball.

Trystan Rodriguez (2020 SS, Corpus Christi, TX) showed a sound approach at the plate with quick hands to the ball and swung with intent. Was aggressive on the bases as well, stealing one bag. Also pitched two scoreless innings getting his slider over for strikes.
Red vs White  >>

11/6/2016 12:10:32 PM

Henry Cooper Huspen (2020 OF, Allen, TX) started with an open stance and drove the ball well with a pull side double to the left-centerfield gap. He was leveraged out in front and will continue to add strength to his frame.

Logan Leax (2019 OF, Montgomery, TX) doubled as well with lift off his swing working up to the ball well. He started with an open stance and showed quick hands through the zone. He also moved well out of the box.

Spencer Flatt (2018 LHP, Ardmore, OK) worked with a crossfire element on the mound and threw from a high 3/4 arm slot. His fastball worked up to 80 mph in his three innings and he struck out four batters.

Clayton Young (2018 LHP, Humble, TX) is very strongly built player with a durable frame and physical projection. Fastball worked 76-78 mph with good arm side life inside to left handed hitters. Showed a big breaking curveball with 12/6 shape and a changeup with short fade. Struck out six batters in three innings.

Kyle Foster (2018 2B, Arlington, TX) showed smooth actions up the middle with athleticism and an accurate arm while playing shortstop.

Damon Fountain (2019 OF, Lake Charles, LA) showed a very quick arm on the mound with a full arm action and threw from a high 3/4 arm slot. He created plane to his fastball that worked 82-84 mph with short life. He also mixed in a hard curveball up to 69 mph and 11/5 shape.
Columbia Blue vs Red >>

11/6/2016 10:33:28 AM

Bryce Yosko (2019 SS, Spring, TX) and Chase Ferem (2018 C, Kingwood, TX) each showed impressive barrel control with doubles. Yosko went to the opposite field gap showing quick hands through the zone. Ferem showed off his raw strength and ability to generate carry off the barrel.

Spencer Flatt (2018 LHP, Ardmore, OK) also doubled in the game for the Red team, showing a quick stroke from the left side of the plate. He used an inside out path with lift through contact.

Cameron Sheets (2018 LHP, Houston, TX) mixed a four pitch mix on the mound striking out four batters over just three innings. His fastball worked up to 80 mph and showed good feel for his changeup at 74 mph.

Cristian Cienfuegos (2019 SS, Baytown, TX) showed a line drive swing plane with a simple approach at the plate with a hard up the middle single. Should continue to add strength to frame. He also impressed on the mound with a fastball that worked 81-83 and a sharp 11/5 curveball in the mid 60's. His arm action was very quick through the back and looked to pitch backwards. He struck out four batters in 2 innings.

Nash McCleland (2018 OF, Tomball, TX) made a very nice diving catch in centerfield showing good range.
Gold vs. Navy Game Highlights >>

11/6/2016 12:00:00 AM

Tyler Scataglia (2018 RHP, Houston, TX) showed off a short and quick arm on the mound, running his fastball up to 84 mph for the Gold team with nice sinking life down in the zone. He also flashed a curveball that was up to 73 mph and a changeup that touched 70 mph. An at-bat after picking up a single past the shortstop, Scataglia also added a double with a line drive that he kept inside the pull side line for an RBI.

Rakim Jones (2018 2B, Boyce, LA) put his bat speed on display in his first at-bat as he roped a hard line drive single past the third baseman before showing some speed and swiping second base. He then picked up another base knock with a solid piece up the middle and topped out at 83 mph on the mound as well.

Kevin Rosengren (2018 RHP, Round Rock, TX) impressed during his time on the mound running his fastball up to 83 mph with solid angle while showing the ability to work either side of the plate. More impressive though was his ability to mix three pitches for strikes and throw them regardless of the count helping to strike out five. He also picked up a triple from the right side.

Chandler Christofferson (2018 RHP, Spring, TX), like Rosengren above, showed comfort on the mound in mixing all of his pitches for strikes. Up to 79 mph with his fastball he made quick work of his four innings, allowing just two base hits while striking out five. At the plate he added a double down the left field line showing a direct path to the ball.

Cristian Gonzalez (2018 1B, Brownsville, TX) impressed with the bat during his first two trips to the plate as he twice picked up doubles, showing strength off of the barrel. A strongly built righthanded hitter, Gonzalez first went deep to center field before showing the same fluid stroke on a double that hopped against the left field wall.

Robert Ruff (2019 OF, Bulverde, TX)chipped in for the Gold team with a double of his own, showing strength to the pull side as he launched a high double deep to the left-center field gap prior to coming around to score a run.

Patrick Dilullo (2018 SS, Austin, TX)showed off some ability as a two-way as he ran his fastball up to 82 mph with sinking life from a loose arm action while spinning a nice downer curveball for strikes and turning over a quality changeup. He also showed with the bat, barreling up a ball for a deep double to centerfield with nice carry off the bat.

Wallace (Tre`) Jones  III (2018 LHP, Houston, TX) found the barrel throughout the game and though only one fell for a base hit it was a nice one as he lined an outer half pitch deep to left field, showing nice carry to the opposite field and solid jump at the point of contact for a double.

Robert Charles Trevino (2018 SS, Cypress, TX) made the defensive gem of the game out at second base as he fielded a slow roller behind the bag, picked the ball, then complete a jump and spin throw across his body to get the runner at first base. it was a nice display of Trevino's overall athleticism.
Orange Team Highlights >>

11/5/2016 8:19:48 PM

Ryan Vadasy (2018 RHP, Corsicana, TX) has deception in delivery and was up to 84 with his fastball showing good command to the inner half.

Connor Woods (2019 LHP, Texas, TX) was up to 82 with arm side run, had idea how to pitch and mixed in 12/6 curveball for strikes at 62.

Royal Vs. White Highlights >>

11/5/2016 8:19:46 PM

James Kirkpatrick (2018 RHP, Houston, TX) threw three hitless innings, striking out five hitters.  He has a very sound delivery with ideal lower half use to help generate velocity and pitched steadily in the 86-88 mph range with good downhill angle to his pitches.  Fitzpatrick's curveball had good arm speed and velocity at 72-74 mph and flashed tightness to the spin.

Holden Lane (2018 RHP, Groves, TX) is a big and physical 6-2/220 right hander who has a loose and whippy arm out front and worked consistently in the mid-80's with his fastball.  Lane played in a football game Friday night, probably not the only showcase participant in football crazed Texas who did, and probably has plenty more in his arm.

CJ Horn (2018 C, San Antonio, TX) went 0-3 on the game but all three at-bats were deep or hard drives to the outfield.  He squared the ball up hard early in the count each time and could have ended up with a couple of extra base hits easily.

Davis Meche (2020 SS, Lake Charles, LA) has a quick left handed swing and the ball jumped off his bat hard.  He also showed lots of carry, especially for his age, across the diamond on his throws from shortstop.

Nicholas Meineke (2018 3B, Spring, TX) has good athleticism as a position player but he was also very solid on the mound as a secondary pitcher.  He worked 81-83 in the strike zone and picked up strike outs with both his curveball and a very nice change up.
Green Team Highlights >>

11/5/2016 8:11:46 PM

Mike (MJ) Rodriguez (2020 C, Corpus Christi, TX) has been a very impressive 2020, he had two hits on the day including a long home run.  Has solid balance at the plate and a solid approach.

Justin Ruble (2018 RHP, Tomball, TX) was up to 87 with his fastball with good life, also mixed in 12/6 curveball with good depth.

Carson Draehn (2020 C/RHP, Brenham, TX) impressed on mound showing the ability to spin his curveball with good shape, was up to 77 with more to come with fastball.

Dax Dathe (2019 SS/RHP, Round Rock, TX) was up to 83 with his fastball with some life down in zone.

Navy Game Highlights >>

11/5/2016 6:44:48 PM

The following players stood out for the Navy team during their two (5) inning games.

Calvin Marks (2019 LHP, San Antonio, TX) has a long arm action with a good online delivery, commanded inner half well.  Fastball topped at 85.

Wallace (Tre`) Jones  III (2018 LHP, Houston, TX) is aggressive with his fastball that topped at 84.

Chandler Christofferson (2018 RHP, Spring, TX) has a short swing with a nice line drive swing plane, he collected two hits on the day.

Court Cosco (2018 3B, Houston, TX) has an aggresssive approach and had three hits on the day with hard contact to the pull side.

Cristian Gonzalez (2018 1B, Brownsville, TX) consistently found the barrel all day collecting 3 hits.  He has a strong lower half and creates good leverage.

Steven Beard (2018 LHP, The Woodlands, TX) was up to 81 with his fastball that played up due to feel of change up that he threw in any count for strikes.

Grant Corb (2018 RHP, Katy, TX) was up to 83 with good down hill plane, created lot of gb/weak contact.

Bryce Yosko (2019 SS, Spring, TX) was up to 83 as well with a quick arm and good arm side run on fastball.

Spencer Flatt (2018 LHP/OF, Ardmore, OK) showed good barrel control and made consistent contact, he had 3 hits on the day.

Robert Charles Trevino (2018 SS, Cypress, TX) is a very aggressive right handed hitter with a projectable 6-2/170 frame.  His swing is loose, if not a little long, but the bat speed is there and he showed the ability lift and drive the ball.

Dylan Savino (2019 RHP, Austin, TX) is a young primary pitcher who weighs 160 pounds but the ball really came off his bat well during his round.

Tannor Fischer (2018 C, Belton, TX) has a simple swing approach he executes well and led to lots of square contact.  He swings hard and creates bat speed that should improve as he gets stronger.

Christian Sanders (2018 SS, Daphne, AL) isn't really strong yet but he has a very sound fundamental swing and timed up everything in BP, leading to lots of hard clean contact and a round that stood out.

Jacob Mayo (2018 OF, West Monroe, LA) combined a short right handed swing with good upper body strength.  He repeated his mechanics well and squared everything up with plenty of jump off the barrel.

Orlando Salinas (2020 SS, Corpus Christi, TX) is only a 2020 but he hits with extreme confidence and surprising bat speed for a young 5-10/155 athlete.  He might have to simplify the approach as the game speeds up but there is no mistaking the bat speed or the intent.

Mike (MJ) Rodriguez (2020 C, Corpus Christi, TX) is a 5-11/250 freshman and he will need to work very hard to get his body under control.  But he has a very loose and powerful right handed swing and the ball absolutely exploded off his barrel for a freshman.  The potential is big.

Cristian Gonzalez (2018 1B, Brownsville, TX) has a very simple and efficient timer that enabled him to be right on the ball every swing.  At 6-1/210 he has plenty of strength and raw bat speed to drive the ball without much effort.

Wallace (Tre`) Jones  III (2018 LHP, Houston, TX) is a primary pitcher with a slender 6-0/160 frame but there are plenty of hitting tools there to develop with repetitions and additional strength.

Corey McMann (2018 OF, Flower Mound, TX) is a polished right handed hitter with some present strength and a low effort swing.  He wore out the right centerfield gap with line drives with lots of carry.

Damon Fountain (2019 OF, Lake Charles, LA) is one of many talented players from national powerhouse Barbe High School at the event and may have the highest ceiling.  He's 6-2/190 with a loose extended swing with lots of present bat speed.

Davis Meche (2020 SS, Lake Charles, LA) is an even younger Barbe player who has high level potential.  He's a left handed hitting middle infielder with quick hands and a very nice swing.

Beckett Vine (2020 C, Houston, TX) has very good strength for a freshman and an aggressive right handed swing with present bat speed.

Julian Rojas (2018 C, Humble, TX) hits from a spread right handed stance with a strong pull oriented swing.  He showed his pop by lifting two impressive BP home runs.

Brett Hammit (2018 SS, Nixa, MO) is a Nebraska commit with an outstanding athletic build.  His right handed approach is complicated and will need adjustments but his raw bat speed and power is huge.  He hit two bombs that carried completely onto the next field beyond the left field fence.

Gus Milligan (2020 OF, Lake Charles, LA) has a projectable 6-1/175 build and plenty of strength for a freshman.  He drove the ball consistently from a sound load and shift into contact.
