The Marlins quad was home run derby Sunday morning, including one stretch when three Grand Slams were hit on the same field over a five inning period.

The barrage on Marlins field 5 started when Texas Sun Devils outfielder Jamal Howard (Phenix City, Ala.) crushed a walk-off grand slam to give the Sun Devils a 9-6 win over the Ontario Blue Jays. Howard is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete who looks like he should have a football scholarship to Alabama instead of a baseball ride. He had narrowly missed another home run earlier in the tournament when his deep drive on Marlins Field 2 was caught on the warning track in the deepest part of left-center field. Howard has run sub-7.0 60-yard dash times before and is a high ceiling athlete.

The first three hitters in the Chandler Baseball lineup in the bottom of the first inning of the next game reached base safely, bringing up cleanup hitter Shane Benes (Town and Country, Mo.), who promptly made the score 4-0. Benes has hit numerous balls hard the past three days that have gone just foul and also shown a tendency to handle off-speed pitches a bit better than fastballs, unusual for this age. This pitch was a curveball on the inside half, and the 6-foot-3, 200-pound righthanded hitter knew what to do with it.

Chandler’s catcher, Colton Shaver (Riverton, Utah) finished the slam parade with a deep, bases-loaded blast into the left-center field trees as Chandler won 13-1 in four innings.
