CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – 2009 Perfect Game All-American Kris Bryant was selected second overall by the Chicago Cubs in the 2013 MLB Draft. Bryant was the starting third baseman from the West squad that year, a native of Las Vegas, Nev. that attended Bonanza High School.

Bryant, whose season ended Sunday with a loss to UCLA in NCAA postseason Regional play, posted eye-popping numbers this season for the San Diego Toreros and is considered to be the favorite to win the prestigious Golden Spikes Award (as well as Perfect Game's own College Player of the Year), annually awarded to the nation's top college player.  He hit .329 while leading the nation in home runs (31), runs (80), total bases (187), slugging percentage (.82) and walks (66).

Selected ahead of Bryant was Stanford's Mark Appel, a participant of Perfect Game's prestigious National Showcase in 2008, held at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

Overall, 21 former Perfect Game All-Americans were selected on Day 1 of the 2013 draft, 18 of which participated in the 2012 Classic.  Notable picks that played in the 10th annual version of the Classic last summer include first baseman Dominic Smith (11th overall/Mets), the New Balance Prospect of the Year, lefthanded pitcher Rob Kaminsky (28th overall/Cardinals), the Baseball America Pitcher of the Year, and outfielder Clint Frazier (5th overall/Indians), the Jackie Robinson Player of the Year.

Twelve more All-Americans were selected on Day 2 of the draft, seven of which played i the 2012 Classic, bringing the two-day draft total to 33.

On Day 3 of the 2013 MLB Draft, 24 more PG All-Americans were selected, bringing the three-day total to 57.

On the first day of the draft, the top two rounds, 61 total former PG participants were selected (84 percent) among the top 73 picks.  Of those 73 picks, 35 had previously attended a Perfect Game National Showcase event (48 percent).
