Year in and year out there are players that emerge in the months just before the draft as potential first round talents. That isn’t necessarily to say that they weren’t established prior to that point, but instead there was just something that put them over and the top as an elite talent. Take Kyle Zimmer for example - following his Cape Cod League performance two summers ago he was considered a strong contender for the first round in the 2012 draft. But, all of a sudden spring arrived, Zimmer was a notch better in just about every way and found himself being taken by the Kansas City Royals with the fifth overall pick.

In 2013, Chris Anderson just might be that guy. And, his progression is far more extreme than Zimmer’s. This spring he’s being discussed as nearly a first round lock and a strong bet to go off the board within the first fifteen picks, but turn back the clock to the end of last summer and the narrative for Anderson was looking far different. For some perspective, he ranked only 90th on Allan Simpson’s Cape Cod League top prospects list. Although he made an impression with his raw stuff, Anderson struggled mightily for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He ended up posting a 6.34 ERA in 33 innings of work, allowing 43 hits and 12 walks in the process. On the bright side, he did strike out 42 batters.
