Red Wing, Minn. is a town of some 16,500 residents located about an hour southeast of downtown Minneapolis along the Mississippi River and right on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border. Their community claim to fame is being the site of the Red Wing Shoe company. Red Wing’s Wikipedia page lists three athletes among its Notable Residents; two skiers and one hockey player.

Of course, the cliché about high school prospects from northern tier states is that they don’t have the skill levels of their athletic peers from the southern states due to a) less time playing and practicing the game outside, and b) lower levels of competition. It will therefore, the standard thought goes, take them longer to develop at the college or professional level as they will need to catch up in their invaluable repetitions.
