This is the time of year when national seeds and NCAA Regional hosts are clinched.

Several teams around the country are still vying for one of those eight elusive national seeds. For instance, LSU was in great shape to earn a national seed after taking a road series from Mississippi two weekends ago. However, it took a step back last weekend with a home series loss to Vanderbilt. Now, the Tigers have some work to do.

They’re absolutely not alone.

Stanford, North Carolina State, Rice and a longer shot, Texas A&M, also are teams vying for national seeds, while Arizona, Central Florida and Ole Miss are teams hoping to do enough the next two weeks to get back in the mix as NCAA Regional hosts.

Then there are the typical teams just looking to get into the field of 64. Auburn, Virginia Tech, New Mexico State, Texas State and Wichita State headline that lengthy list.

We breakdown the situations in each of these groups, and dissect what each team should probably do to better their situations with only a few weeks until Selection Monday.

NATIONAL SEED CONTENDERS

LOUISIANA STATE
Record: 40-13, RPI: 8
Record vs. RPI Top 25: 8-4
Record vs. RPI Top 50: 14-10
Record vs. RPI Top 100: 19-13
What needs to happen: The Tigers appeared to be in pretty good shape to nail down a national seed after winning a road series over Mississippi. However, they made things interesting simply by dropping a home series to Vanderbilt. Now, the Commodores hit the road this weekend to face South Carolina (9) with a national seed on the line. Win the series and the Tigers will be in very good shape for a national seed entering the SEC tournament. But lose it and they’ll need to do some special things in Hoover, Ala., and also get some help elsewhere.
