A high school baseball team from Yamanashi, Japan, will visit Iowa this August for a series of games, including a stop at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids for the Japan-Iowa High School Classic on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

This year's trip by the Japanese team is part of an exchange program that began in 1994 with the Iowa Amateur Athletic Union, Iowa Sister States and officials in Japan. An Iowa team played six games in Japan last year and toured parts of the country, including a visit to Mount Fuji.

The Japanese team is scheduled to arrive in Iowa on Aug. 12 and spend most of the week in Des Moines, where it will play several games. The Japanese also will travel to Kansas City to attend a major league game between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals on Aug. 15.

The Japan-Iowa High School Classic in Cedar Rapids is a joint venture of the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Perfect Game USA and Iowa AAU. The Japanese will play a team of Iowans assembled by Perfect Game in one nine-inning game on Aug. 17 at Perfect Game Field, which is the home of the Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Class A Midwest League.

Japan's games in the Des Moines area are scheduled for Aug. 13, 14 and 16. One of those games is scheduled for Principal Park, the home of the Iowa Cubs, the Triple A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The games in Des Moines will be against local Des Moines-area players who will be selected by Iowa AAU and local high school coaches.

There will be 20 players on the Japanese team, all 17 or 18 years old. The Japanese team is scheduled to return home on Aug. 19.
