Lubbock Regional

Texas Tech will have the chance to return to Omaha for the third time in four years as they advance to Super Regional play after beating Dallas Baptist on Monday, 5-3. Stephen Smith once again did his job stop the Red Raiders’ batting order, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles that led to a pair of runs scored. Orlando Garcia also had a pair of doubles in the game along with three RBI. Ryan Moseley and Hayden Howard essentially split the game on the mound, limiting the Patriots’ offense to just five base hits.

With the win Texas Tech will host East Carolina, the winner of the Charlottesville, Va., Regional.


Nashville Regional

The UC Santa Barbara offense exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning as part of a huge 14-5 win over Xavier to win the Nashville Regional and advance to take on the second-seeded Louisville Cardinals in Louisville, Ky., next weekend in Super Regional play. Austin Bush and Clay Fisher each hit a three-run home run (and each had three hits overall in the game) as part of the Gauchos nine-run fourth.


Lafayette Regional

Arizona beat UL Lafayette not once but twice on Monday to claim the Lafayette Regional, the fourth upset of the tournament, with hopes of returning to Omaha for the first time since they won it all in 2012. In the first game the Wildcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning – highlighted by Ryan Aguilar’s two-run double – and tacked two more runs on in the second. Nathan Bannister worked the first seven innings (his second seven-inning start of the Regional) and pitched well enough to win (also his second win), allowing three runs (including the two that scored in the eighth) while moving to 11-2 on the season.

In the second, Regional-clinching win, Kevin Ginkel (who worked the final 1 2/3 innings in the first game) and Cameron Ming held the Cajuns to just five base hits. Ming in particular was impressively efficient, allowing just one hit while striking out five over the final 3 1/3 innings, while Ginkel provided 7 1/3 total innings on the day. The team’s top two hitters, Cody Ramer and Zach Gibbons, each had a pair of base hits at the top of the Wildcats’ batting order.

Arizona will travel to Starkville, Miss., next weekend to take on Super Regional host Mississippi State.


Rain, rain go away

Although rain didn’t effect the Baton Rouge Regional on Monday, its presence over the weekend was the primary culprit for another game to be played on Tuesday. Rice won a pair of games, first an elimination game over Southeastern Louisiana and next a contest against host Louisiana State. The first game was a dominating blowout, as the team combined for 16 base hits in a 15-0 route with Ricardo Salinas providing 7 1/3 scoreless frames on the bump. Catcher Hunter Kopycinski had the biggest day at the plate, a 3-for-3 performances that allowed him to drive home five of his team’s 15 runs.

The runs continued to come in bunches for the Owls in their 10-6 victory over the host Tigers, scoring three runs in the second and three more in the fifth. Those runs chased starter Caleb Gilbert from the game early, and then reliever Riley Smith as LSU turned to six different relievers to get them through the game. Five different Owls recorded multi-hit games, and Tristan Gray, who hit a solo home run in the fourth, reached base four times (he was intentionally walked twice) and scored three runs. Blake Fox, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, hit a two-run single as part of Rice’s three-run seventh that broke the game open.

As a result the two teams will play a winner-take-all contest on Tuesday, which will be played at 4:00 p.m. CT.

A year after their stunning collapse against TCU that prevented the Wolfpack from advancing to the next round, NC State played an intense game against Coastal Carolina on Monday evening that was suspended (for a second time) in the top of the ninth inning in a bases-loaded situation with one out and slugger G.K. Young set to step to the plate. This game will resume at 2:00 p.m. ET.

It was NC State’s second game against Coastal on the day, beating them much earlier in the day 8-1. Will Gilbert provided eight incredibly valuable innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win, striking out nine batters along the way. NC State’s Nos. 2 and 3 hitters, Evan Mendoza and Preston Palmeiro, each went 3-for-5 with three and two RBI respectively. The Chanticleers only run came on a home run off the bat of the previously mentioned G.K. Young (who was 3-for-4 in the game), his 17th of the year.

The winner will face the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional.

There is one other Super Regional pairing to be determined as the deciding game between South Carolina and UNC Wilmington in Columbia was pushed back once again due to poor weather. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:05 ET on Tuesday.
