Super Regional Bound

Louisville Regional

Louisville was the first team to advance to Super Regional play with a 3-1 win over Wright State. Drew Harrington did his thing, providing 7 1/3 scoreless innings while catcher Will Smith and second baseman Nick Solak both enjoyed three-hit days. Solak’s two-run home run, which followed Smith’s leadoff single in the fourth, gave the Cardinals all the runs we would need on this day to secure another weekend played at home as a Super Regional host.

Wright State beat Ohio State earlier in the day for the opportunity to extend their season, 7-3, as Raiders starter Caleb Sampen and reliever Zane Collins limited the Buckeyes to just five base hits.


Tallahassee Regional

The first six batters in the Seminoles lineup – Taylor Walls, John Sansone, Jackson Lueck, Cal Raleigh, Dylan Busby and Quincy Nieporte – combined to go 15-for-27 with five doubles and four home runs, including two by Busby, in a 18-6 elimination clobbering of South Alabama. Florida State now advances to play the top-seeded Florida Gators, in Gainesville, to whom FSU lost both of their midweek contests to during the regular season.

South Alabama had knocked Southern Miss from the tournament earlier in the day with a 7-5 win.


Gainesville Regional

Speaking of the Gators, they seemed to make quick work of their opponents this weekend even if none of their wins were particularly lopsided. Well, at least until their last of Regional play, a convincing 10-1 win over Georgia Tech. Pete Alonso once again stood out in the middle of the Gators lineup with a 3-for-5 game, and you’ll have to excuse him for not hitting another home run due to the two runs he scored and three he drove in. Alex Faedo provided eight scoreless inning, striking out 10 while allowing just four hits and a walk.

Georgia Tech exacted some revenge on UConn (who beat the Jackets on Friday) knocking the Huskies out of the tournament with a 7-5 win earlier in the day.


Charlottesville Regional

Regional hosts are falling left and right this year, as the third was knocked out of the tournament when William & Mary defeated the defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers, 5-4.

However, East Carolina gladly accepted the Tribe doing their dirty work for them, knocking out William & Mary in their next game with an 8-4 ECU win to advance to Super Regional play. The Pirates hit three home runs in this game, from Charlie Yorgen, Travis Watkins and Eric Tyler, while Sam Lanier provided five scoreless, one-hit innings out of the bullpen to secure the victory.

East Carolina will have to wait until Monday to determine where they will be playing as Dallas Baptist won a pair of games on Sunday, first beating New Mexico 5-3 and then Texas Tech 10-6, to force an elimination game against the Red Raiders in Lubbock on Monday.


Oxford Regional

Boston College did indeed clinch a trip to the next round by beating Tulane 6-3. As noted in Saturday’s recap, the Eagles didn’t have to face the host Ole Miss Rebels as part of their trip to Oxford, and walked away as the victors. Shortstop Johnny Adams proved that BC is about more than just pitching, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Jacob Stevens worked the first five innings, and did a nice job minimizing the damage by allowing just two runs on four base hits and a walk. Boston College will travel to Coral Gables next weekend to take on the Hurricanes.

Tulane had beaten Utah earlier in the day in an elimination contest, 4-1, as Jeremy Montalbano hit his 13th home run of the year and Hunter Hope blasted his 15th.


Coral Gables Regional

A game that started as an early blowout turned into a nailbater as Miami won in walkoff fashion on a Randy Batista run-scoring single to beat Long Beach State 9-8. Zack Collins and Willie Abreu both homered for Miami earlier in the game as they jumped out to a 8-1 lead going into the top of the top of the sixth when the Dirtbags exploded for six runs. As a result, the Hurricanes opened the bullpen cupboard, using five pitchers after starter Jesse Lepore, to navigate their way to a victory.

Long Beach State had eliminated Florida Atlantic earier in the day, 5-1, thanks to a dominant eight-inning performance by Tanner Brown and a three-run bomb off the bat of Daniel Jackson.


Fort Worth Regional

Texas Christian advanced to the Super Regional round for the sixth time in the last eight years with an 8-1 win over Arizona State. Brian Howard was superb in the game, allowing just one run on four hits (and no walks) while striking out nine over eight innings to pick up the win and move to 8-2 on the season. The team’s top four hitters – Austen Wade, Cam Warner, Evan Skoug and Luken Baker – each had a pair of base hits and Dane Steinhagen enjoyed a three-hit game.

ASU beat Gonzaga earlier in the day thanks to a dominant eight-inning performance by Zach Dixon, who scattered six hits and three walks while striking out nine to extend the Sun Devils season one more game.


College Station Regional

A win by TCU and Texas A&M means the two teams will face one another once against in the Super Regional round, this time in Texas A&M’s home park in College Station. The Aggies made quick work of the Gophers, scoring two runs in the second and two more in the fourth before piling on with three more in the ninth to advance with the 8-2 win. The offense continued to receive contributions from seemingly everyone one-through-nine while Mark Ecker struck out all four batters he faced to close out the game.

Miinnesota had beaten Wake Forest earlier on Sunday, 8-3. Gophers catcher Austin Athmann was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored.


Clemson Regional

Oklahoma State had one of the more cleaner paths to the Super Regionals, taking down Clemson 9-2 on Sunday night to advance. Right fielder Corey Hassel went 3-for-5 with four RBI, all of which came on a fifth-inning grand slam that set the tone for the rest of the game. Cowboys starter Jensen Elliott went six strong, striking out eight while allowing just one run on four hits and a walk, while Pat Krall’s magic ran out after giving up the big blast to Hassel.

OSU will have to wait until Monday to see where and who they will play. If South Carolina beats UNCW the Cowboys will spend a second weekend in South Carolina. If the Seahawks win there’s a good chance Oklahoma State hosts.

Alex Eubanks went the distance in Clemson’s 15-3 win over Western Carolina, which saved Krall for their game against Oklahoma State. For as good as Eubanks was it was once again the offense that saved the Tigers from elimination, even if it was temporarily, as the team hit five home runs and enjoyed huge days at the plate by Eli White, Seth Beer, Chris Okey and Weston Wilson.


Starkville Regional

Mississippi State’s magical season continues as they were the 10th and final team to advance to the Super Regional round on Saturday after shutting out Louisiana Tech 4-0. The performance of hard-throwing rigthhander Zac Houston – who struck out 10 batters amidst just two base hits and three walks allowed – was the main story from this game, although the Bulldogs did pound out 10 base hits.

Louisiana Tech had eliminated Cal State Fullerton earlier in the day with a 6-2 win.


On Deck

NC State will play Coastal Carolina at 1:00 p.m. ET on Monday for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals. Coastal Carolina is one win away from advancing while the Wolfpack would have to win the first, and then a second game to advance to the next round.

In a game that was suspended on Saturday evening, Coastal Carolina limited NC State to just four base hits in a 4-0 win that was finished Sunday morning. Alex Cunningham and Mike Morrison combined on the shutout. Third baseman Zach Remillard was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. NC State then dismantled Navy 17-1 to earn the re-match with the Chanticleers with their backs against the wall as the Regional host.

South Carolina scored 33 runs between two games on Sunday to record two much-needed wins to stay alive in their own Regional. In the first game they scored early and often in a 23-2 dismantling of Rhode Island, who had beaten the Gamecocks on Friday night to force them into the losers’ bracket. Even the reserves got into the fray after several of the starters were pulled, pounding out 22 base hits, led by third baseman D.C. Arendas who got on base five times thanks to a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with a walk, a triple, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI. Adam Hill kept things in check on the mound with seven strong innings.

In the Gamecocks’ second win of the day Tyler Johnson went the distance and tossed a dandy of a game – his first start of the year – striking out 11 and allowing just one run on five hits and a walk as South Carolina beat UNC Wilmington 10-1. The bats stayed alive (including a 2-for-4 performance by Arendas) with another 13 base hits.

The third and final game is scheduled for Monday evening in a deciding game against UNC Wilimington.

In the Lafayette, La., Regional, Arizona lost to the Ragin’ Cajuns early before bouncing back with an elimination win over Sam Houston State for another chance at the Cajuns on Monday. The Wildcats turned to their MVP, Bobby Dalbec, out of the bullpen, and while he didn’t post the prettiest line (four runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings) he picked up the win to live to play another day.

As noted previously Texas Tech and Dallas Baptist will play a winner-take-all contest on Monday afternoon for the opportunity to face East Carolina, the winner of the Charlottesville, Va., Regional, in the Super Regionals.

Rain has pestered the Baton Rouge Regional all weekend as host LSU will have to wait until Monday night to face the winner of Rice and Southeastern Louisiana. Rice was beat by LSU earlier on Sunday, 4-2, as Alex Lange out-dueled Jon Duplantier, and Southeastern Louisiana eliminated Utah Valley, 3-2, with hopes of advancing on Monday to face their Louisiana bayou natives.

Xavier knocked out Washington, the second-to-last Pac-12 team standing, to advance to a date against UC Santa Barbara on Monday with hopes of winning the Nashville Regional after eliminating the host Commodores on Saturday. Xaver scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings, with leadoff hitter Rylan Bannon continuing to set the tone at the top of the order with a 2-for-4 night that included a two-run double as part of his team’s four-run second.

Xavier had lost to the Gauchos earlier in the day, 5-4, and will need to win a pair on Monday to win the Nashville Regional.
