Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 2 (12 innings, from Friday, April 15)

Long Beach State took two of three from UC Irvine at home as part of their series win over the Anteaters in a key Big West tilt. UCI start Elliot Surrey kept the LBSU bats silent through seven innings before the Dirtbags finally broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a two-run single off the bat of catcher David Banuelos. The game was finally decided in the 12th inning as Eric Hutting hit a deep fly ball to center field that brought home Daniel Jackson for the walkoff sacrifice fly as Long Beach State won 3-2.

Surrey, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior lefthander, showed excellent pitchability, working mostly in the 85-87 mph range with his fastball, moving the pitch all around the zone. His low-70s curveball was his swing-and-miss out pitch and he also showed great feel for his mid- to upper-70s changeup. While he’s not a flamethrower he did a great job keeping the ball off of barrels and was able to spot any one of his three pitches for strikes in almost any situation/count.

Surrey went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and the two earned runs while allowing just one walk and striking out six, using just 92 pitches to do so. He was already removed from the game when Banuelos hit his game-tying single, but prior to that he did allow a base hit to Brock Lundquist and walked Zack Rivera to set up LBSU’s comeback.
