Area Code Games: Day 1 notes

The grandfather of all showcases, the Area Code Games, began its eight-day run at the equally venerable Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif., on Tuesday. The Area Codes started as a California-only event in 1987 and quickly expanded to a West Coach event and eventually a national-based event that leans more to the West Coast. An Area Code Underclass event was added three years ago and will be run August 9-11.

Like the recently completed East Coast Professional Showcase, the Area Code teams are geographically based and organized completely by pro scouts. There are 32 Perfect Game All-Americans rostered, with the White Sox (Midwest) leading the way with eight such players.
