16u Championship Game Recap

After five highly competitive days of baseball, the 16u National Championship came down to a seven-inning brawl between Marucci Raley and Tri-State Arsenal. Marucci navigated their way through many formidable opponents en route to the championship game, but their run would end there as the defending champs pulled off a comeback for the ages.

For the first six innings, it was all Marucci. Mark Alden Blest imposed his will on Tri-State’s offense, tossing five strikeouts in six scoreless innings. Hunter Nesmith contributed two RBIs as Marucci’s offense established a 4-0 lead heading into the seventh inning.

The bottom of the seventh was Tri-State Arsenal’s last chance to string together some offense. With their backs against the wall, the Arsenal needed a spark. Andrew Holmes provided said spark with a lead-off single to center field. His single injected life into Tri-State’s dugout, and sure enough, their offense began to gain traction.

The bases were loaded with no outs, and the pieces were in place for a miraculous rally. Kevin Welsh and Tyler Juhl answered the bell with back-to-back RBI singles to narrow the gap to just two runs. A few pitches later, the Arsenal collected their third run of the inning courtesy of a wild pitch. With three runs in quick succession, Tri-State’s dugout was electric and the stage was set for Juan Simmons-Ganzaroli. With a 2-1 count, Simmons-Ganzaroli capped off Tri-State’s improbable rally with a game-winning two-run shot down the right field line, securing the 16u title 5-4.

With the walk-off victory, Tri-State Arsenal claimed its second consecutive PG Super25 National Championship. Mark Alden Blest received the MVP Pitcher award for his spectacular performance in Marucci’s championship game loss, while Juan Simmons-Ganzaroli was rightfully named the MVP of the 16u National Championship. It was a day parents, coaches, and players will not soon forget as the Tri-State Arsenal defended their crown to become the 2015 PG Super25 16u National Champions!
