14u Championship Recap: Day 3

Jordan Posway
Saturday marked the Fourth of July and the mid-way point of the PG Super25 14u National Championship. As people across the nation celebrated America’s Independence Day, the boys in Fort Myers took the field for another great day of baseball. Here’s a brief synopsis of Saturday’s events:

The East Cobb Astros scored early and often as they cruised past the South Florida Prospects.  Josiah Miller pitched lights out for four innings while Jack Alexander and Kyle Gray kick-started the offense in the Astros 9-0 shut-out victory. The Prospects would bounce back against the Michigan Blue Jays-Dishman with a dominant 11-2 performance. The Prospects accumulated 10 of their 11 runs in the first two innings. Alex Wertman’s three-run triple highlighted an explosive eight-run second inning.

John Greenwood and the Dallas Tigers-Hernandez dismantled the Zoned RedHawks in five innings. Greenwood pitched a complete game shut-out, and received plenty of run support from Jaden Woodson, Preston King, and Dillon Carter. The trio amassed four RBIs on five hits as the Tigers blanked the RedHawks 10-0.

The RI Eagles never trailed in their 8-1 triumph over the IronPigs. The Eagles racked up eight runs in the first three innings, two of which came courtesy of Kevin Gower. Gower finished the day 3-4 from the dish as the Eagles rolled. However, the Eagles would not fare as well against the EM Majors. The Majors made quick work of the Eagles with seven runs in the first three innings. Blaze Brothers posted a game-high four RBIs on two hits as the Majors prevailed 10-2.

The Marucci Bulls’ sixth inning rally came up one run short in their 7-6 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma Rawlings Prospects-Ritter. The two teams exchanged leads throughout the first four innings, but Jordan Coffey’s three-run double in the fifth inning helped the Prospects pull away for good.

The Kentucky Prospects and the FBH Angels were neck and neck after two innings, but the Prospects hit their stride in the top of third with a five-run explosion. Eric Riffe was a constant threat on the base path, and a catalyst in the Prospects’ third inning rally. Riffe’s squad added six more runs in the final three innings as the Prospects clobbered the Angels 12-4. The East Cobb Braves were the second team to fall victim to the Prospects on Saturday, as they could not find an answer for Tyler Wood and Colbe Crim. The dynamic duo accrued five RBIs on three hits in their team’s 7-3 victory. Wood’s three-run blast in the sixth inning highlighted a spectacular day for the Kentucky Prospects.

Joey DeChiaro and the Diamond Jacks trumped the Game Time Bulls 11-3 in seven innings. DeChiaro recorded a game-high four RBIs off of singles in the second and fifth innings. Alex Antigua and Jack Wilson put together solid outings on the mound, limiting the Game Time Bulls to just three runs. The Bulls’ day went from bad to worse as they dropped a second consecutive game versus the KBC Blue. Jared Gadd and Noah Blythe contributed two RBIs apiece as the KBC Blue tamed the Bulls 7-3.

The Diamond Jacks had a rough outing in their second game as well, as they would fall to the Marucci Bulls 6-3 in seven innings. Four errors yielding two unearned runs plagued the Diamond Jacks. Kevin Ortiz’s double and Brady Smith’s single in the sixth inning gave the Bulls a four-run advantage, which proved to be too much for the Diamond Jacks to overcome.

FTB Mizuno escaped the Legends Prospects 7-6 in a seven inning nail-biter. Hits were hard to come by for FTB Mizuno, but they made due with RBI ground-outs and sacrifice flies. Fabian Escalante relieved starting pitcher Elian Roman in the fifth inning, and closed out the game with three strong innings. The Prospects could not catch a break as they dropped their final game of the day 8-1 to the CBC Elite. Luis Ramos pitched six excellent innings with five strike outs to keep the Prospects’ offense silent. Ricardo Feliciano added an RBI triple in the fifth inning to cap off a terrific 2-3 day at the plate.

Peyton Chatagnier was sensational on the hill for HP Baseball. He allowed zero earned runs and struck out two batters as his team outlasted the Adirondack Heat-Black 4-1. Evan Minarovic and Cade Bartlett led the offensive charge, bringing home two runs in the fifth inning.

The Tri-State Arsenal rode a four-run fifth inning to victory in their 4-2 triumph over the Austin Banditos-Ford. Stephen Restuccio dominated the Banditos from the mound, pitching five scoreless innings. Jake Perkins tallied two RBIs courtesy of a third inning single and a fifth inning double.

The GoWags RiverCats blanked the KBC Red in a seven inning contest on Field 6. A four-run seventh inning put an exclamation point on the GoWags’ dominant performance. Ryan Kutz struck out eight and allowed one hit as the GoWags pummeled the KBC Red 5-0.
