National Notes

It took Tyler Jay four days to make an appearance, which was enough to keep the scouting community locked in hoping to get another look at the talented lefthander prior to the draft, and when he did he made it count. He entered Illinois' 5-4 win over Wright State after the Illini had just pulled ahead in the top of the frame and shut the door the final four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Illinois tacked on three of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by David Kerian's two-run blast, his 17th of the year, to secure the 8-4 victory and another weekend of hosting.

Radford appeared to have hit the wall, and effectively run out of pitching, as Vanderbilt exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning, after already scoring 10 runs prior to that, to roll big over the Highlanders, 21-0. Five players had huge days at the plate for the Commodores; Ro Coleman (4-for-5 with a triple and four runs scored), Rhett Wiseman (1-for-3 with a home run and three driven in), Zander Wiel (4-for-6 with a triple a home run and six RBI), Bryan Reynolds (3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI) and Jason Delay (3-for-5 with four RBI). Walk Buehler worked the first five innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning seven Radford hitters.

Vanderbilt will travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois next weekend in what looks to be one of the more interesting matchups.

•
LSU had a convincing 2-0 win over UNC Wilmington to advance to the Super Regionals after playing in only their third game this weekend. Jared Poche worked the first 8 2/3 innings, allowing just six hits and a walk to pick up the win, although he ws pulled from the contest after giving up a two-out double to UNCW first baseman Corey Dick. Parker Bugg was quickly summoned and he did his job, fanning Andy Austin to end the threat, and the game. The Tigers will host the University of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.

The Ragin' Cajuns advanced to Baton Rouge with a 5-2 win over Rice. It was a true team effort for Louisiana, has six different players recorded base hits and scored each of the five runs with four different hitters driving them in. In addition, three pitchers combined to hold the Owls' offense to two runs, was Evan Guillory went the first five with Will Bacon and Dylan Moore combining for four shutout innings of relief.

Dallas Baptist became the third Regional host whose season came to an end before Super Regional play, joining UC Santa Barbara and Houston. DBU did win their first game on Monday, 2-1, to force a second game which they loss, 3-1. Sean Thompson was sharp for the Rams, giong 5 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one run while striking out four. Matt Lees added 3 2/3 scoreless frames in relief to advance to Super Regional play as a No. 4 seed.

VCU will now travel to Coral Gables to face Miami, who returned on Monday with a vengeance after mustering only two hits in their shutout loss to Columbia on Sunday. Things were much different for the Hurricanes, as they scored 21 runs on 20 base hits, which included an eight-run fourth inning. Carl Chester and Willie Abreu both hit home runs, with Abreu driving in five in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. David Thompson and Zack Collins pushed their season RBI totals to 85 and 70 respectively with two apiece.

The state of Florida is sure to be full of fireworks this weekend as Florida State will travel to Gainesville to take on their in-state foes, the Florida Gators. The Gators already wrapped up their Regional championship on Sunday, while the Seminoles had to wait a day to play College of Charleston due to inclement weather. Led by starter Drew Carlton, who provided 6 2/3 shutout innings, striking out nine Cougars, FSU won the game convincingly, 8-3. D.J. Stewart went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI while first baseman Quincy Nieporte went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and four total RBI.

Just when it looked as though Texas Christian would be the first national seed ushered out of the tournament, the Horned Frogs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one of NC State. They added another run in the ninth to tie the game and another in the 10th to walkoff with a 9-8 victory. They were aided by a pair of controversial balk calls, as well as a few errors by the Wolfpack that allowed them to rally back. Jeremie Fagnan had the biggest hit in the eighth, a two-run single to left, and Derek Odell scored the tying run in the ninth on a passed ball. Elliott Barzilli had the winning hit, an RBI single to right field.

Only seven of the nine runs they scored were earned.

TCU will host Texas A&M, who played another incredibly entertaining game against Cal, with the Aggies coming out on top, 3-1. Blake Allemand hit a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie, and Hunter Melton added an RBI single in the next inning to give A&M a little cushion. Matt Kent provided seven strong innings on the mound.

The biggest upset of the field so far occurred in the last game played, as Maryland took down the No. 1 national seed, UCLA, with a 2-1 win. Freshman Taylor Bloom performed admirably for the Terps, providing six innings of one hit, one run ball, with closer Kevin Mooney going the rest of the way, holding the Bruins to only three hits as their offense really sputtered down the stretch. LaMonte Wade gunned down yet another runner at home from center field in this Regional, and catcher Kevin Martir went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Maryland will play closer to home against Virginia in Charlottesville in the Super Regionals.
