2015 Tournament Schedule

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The high point of the 2014 Perfect Game tournament season arrived back in early June when the doors flew open for the first time at the Perfect Game South at LakePoint complex in Emerson, Ga., a state-of-the-art facility with just four all-turf fields in 2014 but with at least 12 more being built in the coming years.

Those fields hosted tournaments at a railroad pace throughout the summer and the result was a total of 63 PG events being held from coast-to-coast. The 2014 season started with the Perfect Game MLK Championships the third weekend of January in the west Phoenix suburbs and concluded with late October's blockbuster PG WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla.

The 65 tournament champions – there were co-champions at two events – were based in 15 states, with the majority coming from Florida, Georgia, California and Texas; others came from northern states like Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and New Jersey. Most of the tournaments, by far, were played in Georgia, Florida and Arizona, but events were also held in New York, New Jersey, Iowa, Texas and California.

Teams flying the East Cobb Baseball banner won outright or shared in four championships. Six top organizations won three championships and eight others won two.

By the time the Virginia-based EvoShield Canes were walking off the field at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., on Oct. 27, tightly clutching the PG national championship trophy they had secured by winning their second straight PG WWBA World Championship, there were reasons for a couple of dozen travel ball programs from across the country to feel pride in what had transpired during the summer and fall seasons.

The Canes could count themselves among the most satisfied. Not only did they win in Jupiter for the second straight year, they also won the 17u PG WWBA National Championship in Emerson and finished runner-up to the Houston Banditos Black at the 17u Perfect Game World Series in Goodyear, Ariz. -- three of the most prestigious PG national championships on the annual schedule.

An underclass EvoShield Canes team finished third at the 16u PG World Series in Fort Myers, Fla., and teams called EvoShield South finished third at the 17u PG WWBA National Championship and second at the 14u PG WWBA National Championship. Those tournaments are also prominent Perfect Game national championship events.

The East Cobb Astros 18 won the 18u Perfect Game/East Cobb Invitational and finished second at the 17u/18u PG/EvoShield Classic. The East Cobb Bulldogs won the 17u PG-EC Invitational and the East Cobb Astros claimed the title at the PG WWBA National Qualifier. Additionally, the East Cobb Astros 14u were co-champions with the Connecticut Wolfpack at the 14u PG BCS Finals.

Organizations winning three PG tournament championships were: Elite Squad (Florida), CBA Marucci (California), Upstate Mavericks (South Carolina), Houston Banditos (Texas), Florida Burn (Florida) and East Cobb Baseball (Ga.)

The Elite Squad – with a season-high 10 podium (top-three) finishes – won the 16u PG BCS Finals, the 15u Florida State Championship and were co-champions with the Florida Burn at the 18u East Memorial Day Classic. They also had five runner-up finishes, including those recorded at the 17u PG WWBA National Championship and the 16u PG World Series.

CBA Marucci won the 16u Perfect Game MLK Championship in Arizona to get the season started in late January and then won both the Upperclass and Underclass championships at the inaugural Perfect Game California World Series’ held in the Los Angeles area in early October.

CBA was also runner-up to nemesis GBG Marucci at the PG/EvoShield Upperclass National Championship in September. Right-hander Tim Holdgrafer, a St. Mary’s (Calif.) commit from San Diego, was named the Most Valuable Pitcher at both the PG/EvoShield Upper and PG California World Series Upper tournaments.

The Houston Banditos’ championships came at the 17u Perfect Game World Series, the PG WWBA South Qualifier in Houston and at the 13u PG BCS Finals in Fort Myers. The Florida Burn won titles at the 16u PG WWBA East Memorial Day Classic and the PG WWBA Florida Qualifier in addition to their co-championship with the Elite Squad at the 18u East Memorial Day Classic.

The Upstate Mavericks posted six podium finishes and won championships at the PG Elite Underclass Championship, the 18u Labor Day Classic at LakePoint and the 14u PG WWBA National Championship.

Georgia-based Team Elite recorded nine podium finishes that included championships from the Prime at the 16u PG BCS Finals and the Roadrunners at the 16u PG-EC Invitational. Team Elite Prime teams also finished second at the 17u PG WWBA National Championship and the 15u PG-EC Invite, and a Team Elite Roadrunners squad was runner-up at the 16u PG WWBA National Championship.

The Homeplate Chilidogs program, also based in Georgia, had eight podium finishes and Homeplate Chilidogs-Maldonado won titles at the 17u PG WWBA National Qualifier and 17u/18u EvoShield Classic.

Los Angeles-based GBG Marucci won two PG national championships in two weeks in mid-
September out in the Arizona desert, capturing championships at both the Underclass and Upperclass PG/EvoShield National Championships. GBG also advanced to the final four at the PG WWBA World Championship.

The Georgia Jackets 15u won both the 15u PG WWBA National Championship and the 15u PG-EC Invitational. The California-based BPA DeMarini Elite – basically a 15u team that played up all summer and fall – won the 16u PG WWBA National Championship, finished second at the PG California World Series Upper and third at the PG/EvoShield National Championship Upper.

The Reds Midwest Scout Team won the inaugural PG WWBA Central Labor Day Classic played in Central Iowa and then came back three weeks later to win yet another PG WWBA Kernels Foundation Championship in Cedar Rapids. 2015 shortstop Ethan Skender, a Kansas State recruit from Metamora, Ill., was named Most Valuable Player at both events.

California-based Team Phenom was undefeated at two PG tournaments and won championships at the 14u PG MLK Championship and the 14u PG WWBA West Memorial Day Classic.

And finally, the Orlando Scorpions organization posted nine podium finishes but a championship by the Scorpions South Underclass at the 16u Florida State Championship was the only title. Scorpions-affiliated teams performed well at PG BCS Finals events and the Orlando Scorpions/Mets Scout Team finished second to the EvoShield Canes at the PG WWBA World Championship.
