Summer Collegiate Team Rankings

Plenty of Shakeup in Rankings,
Though Chatham, Waterloo Still 1-2

With the regular season complete in roughly half the nation’s summer-college leagues, the top four teams in Perfect Game’s weekly ranking of the top 30 clubs remains unchanged. The Cape Cod League’s Chatham Anglers and Northwoods League’s Waterloo Bucks rank 1-2 for the fourth week in a row, while the Coastal Plains’ Edenton Steamers and Texas Collegiate’s Brazos Valley Bombers hold steady again at 3-4.

Those teams have dominated their respective leagues this summer almost from the outset.

There is a significant shakeup overall in this week’s summer rankings, however, with seven new clubs entering the Top 30. Among them are two traditional summer powers: the West Coast League’s Corvallis Knights at No. 20 and Perfect Game Collegiate League’s Amsterdam Mohawks at No. 22. Both those clubs started slowly this season, only to stage late surges that saw them move to the top of the standings in their respective leagues.

Two other clubs that entered Perfect Game’s rankings for the first time ever are the California Collegiate League’s L.A. Brewers at No. 23 and MINK League’s Clarinda A’s at No. 24. The Brewers won the CCL title by upstaging that league’s two traditional powers, the Santa Barbara Foresters and San Luis Obispo Blues, while the A’s clinched the MINK League championship.

Despite the Brewers unexpected success, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo will represent the CCL in this year’s National Baseball Congress World Series, currently underway in Wichita, Kan. As the event’s two-time defending champions, the No. 14 Foresters have been installed as the No. 1 seed.

The Cape Cod League regular season, meanwhile, still has another week remaining, while the Northwoods League schedule runs until Aug. 14.

PG’s national ranking of summer clubs are determined on the following criteria: won-loss record, league dominance, depth and quality of professional-level talent and the overall strength of the league. Teams must have at least a .500 record to earn consideration.
