Blake Amaral is a 2008 3B/SS with a 6'0'', 175 lb. frame from Hilo HI, who attends Kamehameha HS. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Amaral has a lean, wiry strong, athletic body that looks to have more room to fill out. He is an exciting player to watch and should continue to get better and better the more he plays, particularly against strong competition. Amaral is a good baseball player with good ability. His bat stands out the most right now. He has plus bat speed and an aggressive, "hit first" nature, with visible confidence when he is at the plate. His trigger works well, he recognizes pitches well and early and the ball gets off his bat well, suggesting some projectable power. Defensively he shows some athleticism and has a quick, loose arm. He reacted and played on the move at 3rd base better than he played balls that were right at him or in his immediate area. That suggested that he might be better off moving his athleticism to the outfield. His longish arm stroke would also fit better in the outfield. On the mound Amaral has a really nice arm action. His fastball was only 78-80 mph but there is more there with a more polished delivery. His fastball has sink and he can really spin the curveball well. His curveball (68-69 mph) is a swing and miss type of breaking ball. Amaral also has good feel of the change-up and thows it with good hand speed. In time he could develop into a solid college middle reliever. However, his future would seem to be as a position player and he is a good one, with quite a bit of upside.
