Johnny Orantes is a 2009 OF/P with a 5'10'', 150 lb. frame from San Francisco CA, who attends Gateway HS. He has a lanky, wiry build on a medium frame that is still physically developing. Orantes' desire and passion to play the game go beyond his physical abilities. One thing he really does have going for him is a good set of hands. He competes at the plate and takes aggressive swings, with a simple "see it and hit it" approach, which is made better because of those hands. He has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball even though it is not an orthodox swing. His head stays still during his swing, another indication that there is something there offensively. He is raw, but flashes some promise. Defensively Orantes showed decent body control and a pretty quick release. He aggressively goes to the ball in the outfield. On the mound he competed to the zone and threw strikes, while upsetting the timing of the hitters with his upper-60s/low-70s stuff.
