Matt Akiyama is a 2008 MIF with a 5'7'', 150 lb. frame from Lomita, CA who attends Bishop Montgomery HS. He has a small frame and a compact build. Akiyama is a good baseball player with good skill level. His best attribute is hands and they work for him in all phases of the game. He is a contact hitter with a short, quick swing and an whole field approach. Akiyama has good bat control and made consistent barrel contact. The two-hole would be a great spot for him in a line-up. Akiyama makes his biggest impact on the defensive side of the game. It was fun watching him play defense. He has plus plus hands and plays with feel. Akiyama's transfer of ball from glove to hand is really quick as is his release. He makes the everyday play everyday and on occasion makes a standout play. Akiyama is really good going to the backhand. His skill level is very high and should get him on the field as a freshman in college.
