Derek Neugebauer is a 2008 right handed pitcher (OF - R/R) from Huntington Beach HS, residing in Huntington Beach, CA. He has a 6'2" 175 lb. frame with a long, lanky, body type that can be considered projectable. Neugebauer pitches from a 3/4 slot and has a loose arm that starts out with some hooking on the backside, which indicates his loose wrist. He was very interesting to watch and to consider how good he can be in the future. The main reason is that his fastball has plus sink action, to both sides of the plate. It is actually plus plus on the arm side, resulting in basically nothing but ground balls in his outing. He throws strikes and competes in the bottom of the zone, getting hitters to put his pitch into play. Hitters were consistently rolling his pitches over and getting themselves out, which looked to be Neugebauer's approach. He also showed a usable change-up that will be best in the future against aggressive left hand hitters. His stuff is quite slippery and he is the type of pitcher that has hitters muttering to themselves all the way back to the dugout. Neugebauer's stuff is not exceptional, with a fastball that topped around 80 mph, but he can pitch and he still has the chance to gain mph as he physically matures. As a hitter he is a slasher with a big, aggressive, flat swing and a very simple, see it and hit it approach. As stated, Neugebauer is quite interesting as a follow prospecdt on the mound because there simply are not too many pitchers that have sink like he does. Coaches with good imaginations can get very excited about Neugebauer's future.
