Nathan Striz is a 2007 RHP with a 6'2'', 210 lb. frame from Lakeland FL, who attends Santa Fe Catholic HS. He has a strong, mature build and looked like he had firmed up some over the off season and was in very good shape. Striz throws from a straight up delivery with a good even pace to it. His arm action is short and quick in back. Striz's fastball was 88 mph from the stretch, 90-91 mph from the wind up and he threw one at 93 mph. Striz gets some run and sink on his fastball but it's pretty "light" and he needs to work it around the strike zone to be most effective. His best off speed pitch this day was a 81 mph change up that had very good life at times. He throws a mid-70's breaking ball with a slider break that has good sharpness and he commands it well. Striz will probably be encouraged to either go with a true slider in the 80's at the next level or widen the break on what he's throwing now. Overall, Striz is a polished pitcher with a strong arm and three solid pitches to attack hitters with. He's a good student who has signed to go to North Carolina.

Nathan Striz is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Santa Fe Catholic HS, residing in Lakeland, FL. Striz has a physically mature body and looks as though he will be quite durable. He has good flexibility with that 6'2" 210 lb. body. Striz can pitch a bit and was ranked #65 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and has a clean backside arm action. That arm action is easy and long on the back side and long with extension on the front side, with some arm speed throughout. His mechanics are quite simple and he commanded his stuff well. Striz is a competitive pitcher. His fastball topped at 93 and sat 87-92 mph. There are times when it can be heavy in the bottom of the zone, particularly when he maximizes extension at release point. For the most part he stayed on the outer half but was best when he mixed in fastballs on the inner half, particularly to RH hitters. There is some sink to that fastball and some lively down life that could result in a lot of ground balls. His curveball was 73-75 mph with 11/5 shape and decent spin. It was a very good pitch for him down in the zone when he was taking his time in the delivery. Striz did show a change-up, though he pushed it a bit. Though his body is mostly mature, his arm works well enough to suggest the he can still gain some mph in the coming years, as he gains more strength in his core and lower body. With a big spring and some consistent outings showing 90-93 with a breaking ball, he will get some pro attention and certainly is a top D1 caliber arm.
