Travis Smith is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Austin HS, residing in Austin, TX. He has a lanky body and quite a nice 6'5" 185 lb. pitcher's frame. Smith is an interesting prospect and was ranked #67 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He has as good of a chance as anyone, and better than most, to continue to develop and climb. It seems as though there are more and more physically developed high school pitchers these days and it is fun to watch and project with a prospect like Smith. He pitches from an over the top slot with a short, two-piece (not a clean circle, the elbow shows angles on the back side) dipping arm action on the back side. Smith has a somewhat cross body delivery that can be , delivery can be distracting to the hitter. He has a quick arm and there is some effort in his delivery. For the most part, his body is balanced during the delivery. Smith topped out at 89 mph and sat in the 86-88 mph range, showing some tilt. Because there is some distraction in his delivery and his arm action is a short, his fastball can be a bit sneaky, jumping on hitters a bit. Smith's curveball has good depth and he ranged up and down with the velocity showing the ability to change speeds with a breaking ball (67-74), which not many young pitchers can do or even understand why they would want to. That pitch has rolling action and ok down angle in the zone. Smith also showed feel for his 72-73 mph change-up which he kept down. He was able to use his curveball to set up his fastball and showed some pitchability, basically with two pitches, but realistically more because of his ability to add and subtract with the breaking ball. He will be an effective D1 pitcher because of that breaking ball and should continue to gain prospect status as he physically matures.

Smith is a 6-3, 170 lb junior right handed pitcher from Texas with a very projectable body. He has narrow sloping shoulders and long arms and legs. Smith's delivery isn't fully polished yet; he tends to drift to the plate early and will fall off to the first base side on release. But his arm works as loosely and smoothly as you'll every want to see in a young pitcher. His arm circle is long and loose and it comes through quick and clean and the ball leaves his hand easily. Smith's fastball was 83-85 mph with very good life down in the zone. Both his curveball at 69 mph and his 72 mph change up were quality off speed pitches that project to plus pitches in the future. We wouldn't be at all surprised to find Smith throwing in the 90's before long and with his command and ability to spin the ball and change speeds, that adds up to a top national level pitching prospect.
