2004 Underclass National Showcase
Brett Mendoza -- Mendoza is a short but strong junior catcher from California. He comes from a very involved baseball family and it shows by the way he plays the game and in his fundamentals and preparation. Mendoza has excellent hand strength, a short, quick swing and is a very patient and confident hitter at the plate. It’s a very simple, repeatable swing that’s going to result in tons of line drives at the next level. There’s some loft and extension at the end of Mendoza’s swing and it wouldn’t surprise us if he hit some home runs with metal in his hands. Mendoza is a very polished receiver behind the plate and will manage a game well. He has compact actions and we were a bit surprised by his pop times. Mendoza has a good arm and may have been feeling the effects of cross country travel and off-season baseball during the workout. He’s a strong student as well.
