Jamal Austin is a 2008 OF with a 5'8'', 150 lb. frame from Powder Springs GA, who attends Harrison HS. He has a short, live body with fair present strength. Austin is a speed player with a quick first step and good top end speed. He ran the 60 in 6.61 and was 4.17 to 4.23 down to first base every time from the right side. Austin has a short, quick swing that puts the ball on a line or on the ground and lets him use his speed. He has little weight transfer in his swing, which enables him to stay back on off speed stuff but which also keeps him from having much bat speed to drive the ball to the alleys. Austin uses his speed well in the outfield and has excellent range. He needs work on his throwing technique to use his arm strength better. Austin was named to the showcase Top Prospect Team.
