Joel Champion is a 2016 C/RHP, SS with a 5-10 200 lb. frame from Waterloo, IA who attends West. Medium frame with a solid build. Right handed hitter with a balanced stance. Loads to a strong position and hands launch on a compact plane to contact. Mid-field to opposite field approach and emphasizes an inside out swing. Bat speed is primarily produced from the hands with quiet lower half actions. Shows balance throughout swing. Defensively worked out at catcher showing a low base and solid balance while receiving. Deliberate footwork and transition through baseball. Creates good direction on throws with some online carry to bag topping at 73 mph, best pop of 2.25. Has consistent, repeatable mechancis behind the plate. On the mound show a shorter overtop arm slot. Tall and fall mechanics off a strong front side that produce and level plained 4-seam fastball. Tends to fall off to 1B side on offering. Around the zone often with fastball ranging from 70-74 mph. Shows a soft curveball with 12/6 shape, topped at 64 mph. Tends to miss low with curveball with high energy arm actions. Primarily generates velocity from arm whip, more left in lower half. Also worked out form the infield defensively. Tends to play back on the baseball with smooth, soft funneling actions while surrounding the baseball. Short overtop arm action with some online carry and accuracy on throws, topped at 77 mph across the infield. Tools project for 3B in the infield. Good student.
