2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Andrew Berger is a 2006 RHP from R.L. Stevenson HS, residing in Carmel, CA, with a 6'3", 220 lb. frame. He has a strong and thick body, a wide power-type build. Berger pitches from an over the top slot and does a nice job of posting over the rubber. On the backside he has a Keith Foulke-like pause and a short arm action. It would be interesting to see what would happen in terms of velocity with a more traditional arm stroke, one that creates some leverage. Berger has a tall and fall delivery, which also does not accentuate the power his body could deliver. A drop and drive deliver may suit him better. He is a quality strike thrower and competes well. Berger has pitchability with all three pitches. He tilts the fastball (82-85) to the bottom of the zone well, though he does not generate much movement. His breaker is a 12/6 type curveball (64-65) with good depth and he throws the curveball for strikes. Berger maintains good arm speed and has feel of his change-up (70-73), which appears to be a circle change-up. He is clearly and intelligent pitcher with feel for the ball. He is a top end student and a good follow for programs at strong academic schools. A leap in velocity will enhance his opportunities with four year programs.
