Jay Richards is a 2007 MIF with a 5'11'', 160 lb. frame from Gig Harbor WA, who attends Bellarmine Prep. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Richards is a talented baseball player, with very good hand eye coordination, and feel for the game. He is also a baseball rat. In time, as he gets bigger and stronger, his ability is going to really come to the forefront, passing many players that presently are more in demand than he is. He is fun to watch play and to consider his future. Richards has a wiry strong, lithely built body. He is a long way from being physically maxed out. Whether it is at the plate or in the field, Richards shows that he has excellent hands. Offensively he hits with very good rhythm and has a technically sound swing, with a lower that really works and good timing. He has a plus hand path and hits the ball hard to all fields. He gets through contact and should develop solid gap power. Richards has good bat control, with a good trigger and an easy, short swing. He could hit anywhere from first to third in an order. His at-bats were tremendous, as he showed the ability to stay back on offspeed stuff and always seemed in control of the at-bat. Defensively he has a quick release that allows him to play above his raw arm strength and can really pick it, with soft hands. His feet work really well, with a good first step, good angles, and good range. Richards simply has feel for playing the game. He can play all three infield spots. He is a very good student too, on top of being a talented and polished player.
