2004 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Tyler Welch is a big 6'3", 195 lb. right handed pitcher/first baseman from Bettendorf, Iowa. Defensively, Welch showed the footwork and hands that would allow him to play first base. On the mound, Welch threw from a high 3/4 release point with a small arm circle on the back side of his delivery. He hides the ball well from the hitter and is deceptive. He topped out at 78 mph with his fastball to go along with a 66 mph curveball with average spin and break. At the plate Welch shows some strength, and hit a hard line drive to right field during one of the showcase games. He seemed to know the game and played hard.
