6/1/12: Valentin Diaz is the son of former big league infielder Jose Valentin, who hit 249 home runs in 16 big league seasons, including 30 home runs as a member of the White Sox in 2004. While Valentin was primarily a shortstop, he played every position except pitcher and catcher during his career and was also a switch-hitter. Like his father, Diaz is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound switch-hitter whose bat speed and power are deceptive for his size. He has legitimate bat speed from both sides of the plate, with just a bit different swing mechanics. His right handed swing has a bit better rhythm to get started and a bit more hand use and has a quick line drive swing plane. Valentin Diaz’s left handed swing is a bit more rotational and long with more pull and lift out front and he projects to him more home runs from the left side, while perhaps not hitting for quite as high an average. Valentin Diaz hit very well in all the major showcase and tournament events and established himself as a gamer for his overall performance. In fact, he tends to hit higher velocity/quality pitching better than mediocre stuff, not at all a bad sign for his professional future. While he plays shortstop, most view him as a second baseman at the professional level. In an attempt to prove his worth at the shortstop position, he switched teams in Puerto Rico this spring so he wasn’t playing on the same team as Carlos Correa. While Diaz has very soft and sure hands and a quick exchange and release, his quickness and arm strength project better at second base. Valentin Diaz also has a scholarship to Louisiana State to consider when scouts evaluate his draft position. While his father signed as a free agent in 1986 before the draft included Puerto Rico, Valentin Diaz is one of the rare present day Puerto Ricans who has a legitimate second option when it comes to the draft.

Jesmuel Valentin Diaz is a 2012 MIF with a 5-10 175 lb. frame from Manati, PR who attends Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. Strong compact build, good present strength. Very good middle infield actions, works around the ball well, quick feet, soft hands, compact arm and release, very quick double play turns at second base, makes all the plays. Switch hitter, better bat speed and rhythm right handed, aggressive approach, ball jumps hard, good extension out front, shows more lift at times left handed, definitely capable of switching at the highest levels, confident hitter with an idea at the plate. Plays hard, mature high energy approach to the game.
