C Ben Geelan: This is the best that we’ve seen Geelan play, and we’ve seen him play a lot. He threw outstanding in the workout, showing a very strong arm and quick release that put every pop time in the 1.87 – 1.92 area with throws right on the bag. Geelan caught top prospect Matt Walker like a polished pro, as well. Geelan’s bat has never been his strongest point but he really hit well during the games, hitting three line drives to the outfield, one of which found the left centerfield gap for a double. Geelan’s projectable body and outstanding makeup give him a great chance to keep improving as he gets older. He’s signed with Iowa.

C/RHP Ben Geelan: Geelan is a very athletic two-way prospect whose arm strength and lean and projectable athletic frame will garner him some attention from the professional scouts. He threw well at the Indoor Showcase in February, touching 89 mph with his fastball, and was consistently 84-86 mph during the Spring League and at the Spring Showcase. Geelan’s pitching skills are on the raw side but he can run the radar gun up and get good spin on his breaking ball. Geelan’s defensive skills behind the plate are very good. He has a calm, mature approach to catching with quick actions. Arm strength is obviously not a problem and most baserunners in the league seemed to know he can get it down to second base in the 1.85 to 2.00 range and stayed close to their bases. Geelan has caught pitchers with good quality stuff with ease and does a good job framing pitches. Geelan’s bat gets a bit pull happy at times but he generates good bat speed and should become a good hitter as he gets more repetitions. He’s shown us some power potential that could develop in the future. He has signed to play at Iowa. Geelan’s makeup is excellent and he loves being at the ballpark.

Ben Geelan: Geelan is a senior catcher/right handed pitcher from Iowa who is a legit prospect both ways. Geelan has a very trim, lean and athletic 6-1, 185 lb frame with a high waist. He is strong and loose with room still left for projection. As a catcher, Geelan did a good job of handling Gary Perinar and his 93 mph fastball and he definitely has the arm strength for the position. In fact, his throws from behind the plate registered 83 mph. Geelan’s raw bat speed was among the best at the Showcase and he made consistent solid hard contact against live pitching. He’s an anxious hitter who really attacks the ball. On the mound, Geelan has a big leg kick and hip turn that leaves his arm a bit late occasionally but he maintains his balance well. Geelan pretty much sat at 86-88 mph on his fastball and had some cutting action on it at times. He threw a low 70’s curveball, and generated very good spin on it when he released it out front. Geelan’s change up was 78 mph and had good sinking action. Ben is an outstanding student who has signed with the U of Iowa. He just keeps getting better and better in giant strides. He's going to create some serious interest for MLB scouts this spring.

Geelan is an "04" C/RHP that we’ve watched a lot over the past few years. At 6'0/177 he is getting stronger, but there's plenty of room for more. He has an exceptional arm from behind the plate. In CR he popped 1.9 with very good 80 mph velocity. He keeps getting better and better as a receiver and that won't stop soon. He's mostly a pull hitter with a good swing and serious bat speed. He plays hard and has championship type makeup. On the mound he threw mid 80s with a decent breaking ball. Ben's got a chance to be very good at the next level.

Geelan is a solid catcher and features a strong arm that also showed well on the hill. At 5 foot 11 and 177 pounds, he showed defensive excellence behind the plate including a 2.06 pop time. His arm is the key to his pop times and with quicker feet and transfers he will routinely be able to shave a tenth off that time. His pop velocity was 78 mph and consistently around the bag. On the mound Geelan threw an 83-86 mph fastball, a 67-69 mph curve and a 66 mph change-up. His fastball was his best pitch. He displayed good bat-speed at the plate, produced many line drives in BP and also played very well at 3B showing off his arm on a tough backhand hot shot down the line. Geelan is a Junior that needs to be watched.

Geelan showed good catching ability in all phases of the game at the Indoor showcase. He has a good catchers build at 5 foot 11 and 177 pounds with excellent mobility and defensive skill behind the plate. His body is well-suited for the catching position with strong legs and proportionate musculature showing room for growth. His arm works very well from behind the plate. He did everything textbook from blocking to receiving and showed very quick feet on his throws to second base. He transfers the ball quickly, throws from his ear with a fast arm and showed 78 mph velocity. All are indications that he is capable of consistent sub 2 pop times. With the bat Geelan showed us an aggressive approach and didn't hold back on his swing. He tried to lift the ball at times but showed his best swing when he kept his head still, kept his swing under control and drove the ball with a more level swing plane. He has hitting ability and we think he will end up helping his team both offensively and defensively in a competitive division 1 program. Keep an eye on him because he could be a highly recruited catcher by next year. He is the best player we've seen from Algona since Brad Nelson.
