Maverick Lasker is a 2008 right hand hitting third baseman/right hand pitcher from Sandra Day O'Connor HS, residing in Glendale, AZ. Named a Top Prospect at this event (as a pitcher). He has a 6'1" 175 lb. frame and a strong, athletic, well-proportioned body that still has room to fill out. Lasker is one of the more polished and talented players in the '08 class and still has plenty of ceiling to reach. On the mound he is an absolute joy to watch pitch and compete. His arm works cleanly, quickly, and easily, with whippy arm speed. He is a very good athlete and repeats his delivery well. In particular, he really understands how to use his lower half, which sets up as a great base to allow maximum extension. He has been coached well. Lasker's fastball topped at 88 mph (low 90s are coming very soon) and comes out of his hand easily. He has plus control of the fastball to both sides of the plate, bordering on true command. Because of his good extension, he gets late life down on the zone with his fastball that up until the last few feet actually appears to be straight, but its not. He really does a nice job of dominating the top of the baseball. Lasker's curveball is a plus pitch right now. It has tight spin and excellent depth. He can use it as a put-away pitch, as a set-up pitch, or to steal a strike in positive counts. His command of the curveball is advanced. Lasker also has plus feel of his change-up that has late diving action. He has all the pitches and knows how to pitch. He has big-time mound presence and moxy and exudes confidence. Offensively he is also talented. Lasker has good bat speed and took very good game swings. He is strong and there is life in his bat. His hands work well and when his timing is down, he can rake a bit. He appeared very close to putting it all together as a hitter. There is also some developing power in his stroke. Defensively he can play third base. His hands are good and his arm tracks across the diamond. His range and angles are solid and he makes the plays he is supposed to make, with athleticism to make tough plays too. There really isn't much this young player cannot do. Long range he likely develops further on the mound, where he could pitch for most D1 programs right now. He will get pro interest for the '08 draft.
