Patrick Johnson is a 2007 right hand pitcher from St. Stephen's HS, residing in Conover, NC. Johnson is a "small" righty with an average build on his 5'10" 170 lb. frame. One positive physical attribute he does have are long arms, sort of overcoming his lack of significant height. Johnson also plays some middle infield and hits from the right side. His best postion is on the mound, where he ranked #64 among PG National Top 85 pitchers and when we saw him later in the summer in the WWBA 17U tournament, he was better than that. He is a very good athlete on the mound, with a nice delivery. Johnson has a long arm action and an arc that with his arm speed provides a lot of life on his pitches. He makes a clean circle on the backside. His is a very good arm action, best described as long, easy, and quick. Most outstanding is that Johnson is very polished on the mound, working efficiently and aggressively. There is a presence about him that puts hitters on their heels. Johnson has a quality three pitch mix and command of all of them. His delivery is free and easy with good rhythm, allowing him to be aggressive with the ball. Johnson has good body balance that allows his hand to command the ball at release. His fastball is 87-90 with good arm side ride and he showed the ability work vertically with the fastball, which can be quite lively at the plate. Johnson also has a snappy and tight 72-74 two-plane curveball with quick and late change of direction. He throws his change-up with plus feel and arm action. Johnson really is only lacking size and the way he goes about his business and with his stuff, that lack of size is not a BIG issue, pardon the pun. He is a good athlete and posted a 6.76 laser timed 60. A top tier D1 prospect that can be expected to come to school.

Patrick Johnson is a 5'9" 155 pound 2007 right handed pitcher, shortstop, and outfielder from St. Stephens High School in Conover, North Carolina who was named to the Top Prospect Team. He has a wiry lean build with good strength. Patrick has a great arm with plus movement on his pitches. His fastball was at 91 mph with good late sink. He threw his curveball at 69 mph and his change up at 79 mph. He also showed a good move to first base. Johnson also showed his arm strength by throwing 88 mph across the infield during the workout. He has smooth hands and feet with good actions as well. At the plate, Patrick has strong hands with good balance and rhythm. He has good bat speed and gets good extension while making solid contact. Johnson took a very good batting practice and showed the ability to turn on the inside pitches. He attacks the ball and is an aggressive hitter but he stays back very well. He has a line drive swing plane and showed plus power to all fields. Patrick is a very impressive prospect who is a good all around athlete.

Johnson is a live bodied sophomore right handed pitcher from North Carolina who we have seen frequently in the past. He has a very quick arm stroke and generates plenty of power to the plate from his smaller frame. Johnson’s fastball topped out at 89 mph in Fort Myers. His strikeout pitch has always been a 68-71 mph curveball that gets a very, very sharp and big downer break and can buckle good hitter’s knees. Johnson also throws a 72-74 mph change up and knows how to mix up his pitches. Johnson is an intense competitor and has been used as a closer in the past. We’d also like to see Johnson play in the field more as he develops over the next few years. He’s a good overall athlete who has bat speed and running speed.

Patrick Johnson -- Johnson is a freshman right handed pitcher/shortstop from North Carolina who looks like a legit two-way guy, especially if he grows a bit into his slender 5-9 frame. Johnson only threw 1 inning in the All-Prospect game and didn’t play or workout at shortstop because of a minor sore arm, but he showed us plenty of tools anyway. Johnson has a live athletic body and good actions. He ran 7.38 on the Fort Myers sponge but we got him at 4.20 to first base from the right side, so he’s a very good runner. On the mound, Johnson showed a loose, quick arm that generated an 83-85 mph fastball that had very nice, late exploding life to it. Johnson’s 63 mph curveball lacked velocity but had tight spin and a big, late break to it. At the plate, Johnson hit from a no load approach with good bat speed and some loft to his swing. We’re looking forward to seeing Johnson play when he’s 100% healthy. No question, he has a very bright future.
