RHP Mark Bennett: Bennett, who recently signed with Northern Iowa, threw very well at the Spring Showcase. His curveball was tighter and sharper than we’ve ever seen it; and we’ve seen Bennett pitch almost every week for years. It was no contest with the hitters (Bennett struck out nine in three innings, while also allowing a triple and two runners to reach on infield errors) and the fact that he was throwing 86-88 mph consistently was nice to see, too. Bennett also ran well and hit the ball like a position prospect, so it definitely looks like he’s maturing as a prospect. Bennett is the class valedictorian for his high school and has off the board test scores as well, so this is a very well rounded young man who has a bright future ahead of him.

Mark Bennett: Bennett is a Cedar Rapids native who works out at the PG facilities and even helped out with some chores at the Showcase, so you can say that we know him well. He throws from a straight up delivery with a clean, flat low 3/4 arm stroke and little effort. Bennett has touched 90 mph in workouts for us a number of times and pitched mostly in the mid to upper -80’s at the Indoor Showcase, topping out at 88 mph, 90 on the Jugs. Bennett will cut his fastball on occasion and throws a 72 mph curveball that has good depth to it. His circle change is good at 78-79 mph and this pitch is going to improve for him. Mark just keeps getting better and better. He's a 6'3/195 RHP who will end up throwing in the 90s. Mark is an outstanding student as well.

Bennett is a 6-3 right hander with a long waist and long arms. He has an easy slow paced delivery that could get a bit more energy from his hips and lower half. Bennett threw his fastball 84-87 mph during his 2-inning stint and most of his fastballs were pretty straight. He also threw a curveball that ranged anywhere from 70-76 mph with good spin and rotation to them, especially at the lower speeds. We’ve seen Bennett a lot and he’s made tremendous improvement during the past year and has hit a number of 88-90’s for us. With a little more body strength, he could begin reaching that kind of velocity on a steady basis. Bennett is an outstanding student as well. He's a late bloomer and possible big sleeper at the college level.

Bennett is a big strong 6'3/190 RHP/OF. He runs OK and has a good arm. He can hit with power but has a tendency to over swing a bit. He hit a lot of top spinners in CR. He has all the tools to be an excellent hitter with power. On the mound he was mid 80s with a low 70s breaking ball. He gets very good life on the heater from a low 3/4 angle. He might throw 90 one of these days. He has a good college future on the mound. Mark is an excellent student.

Bennett, at 6 foot 3 and 190 pounds is a strong pitcher with some juice in his bat. He is getting bigger and stronger right in front of our eyes. He threw a consistent 86 mph fastball, a 70-72 mph curve that showed a nice bite and a 76-77 mph slider with a late bend. He has potential on the mound to draw lots of Colleges to him this summer. At the plate he has shown wood power before and nothing different at the Midwest Showcase. He hit 2 balls off the left field fence and 2 more hard outs deep in the outfield. There is 2 way potential in there and as an outfielder in High School when he is not pitching, the 7.17 he ran in the 60 plays with that bat !
