Rafael Del Rio is a 2008 right hand hitting catcher from Brookdale (Ecuador) HS. He has a 5'10" 175 lb. frame, with an strong, compact body type. Del Rio understands how to play the game and at this point he is able to get the most out of his ability. Offensively he starts with his hands held high and works to get behind the ball at contact. His nature is aggressive and he has some strength. Once his swing is underway he has good bat speed and showed that he is a good contact hitter. Del Rio also ran the bases noticeably well. Behind the plate the ball exited his hand well and he has some arm strength. His defensive workout pop times ranged from 2.05-2.09 and he was consistently accurate. Del Rio keeps the catch/throw motion simple ane efficient. He blocked balls in the dirt well and also made a very nice play on a tough pop-up, the type of play that most high school catchers do not make. Del Rio is a good baseball player and should be considered a small college prospect.
