Sweeney is a top Draft prospect that we see a lot of. We are never surprised by his performance since he has been competing with Older players and prospects for nearly 5 years now. He has been elevating his game steadily over the past 10-12 months so we were aware that his game would be in peak form at the time of the Midwest event. He still exceeded some expectations by running the fastest time in the 60 registering a 6.53 on the laser, the best time we have ever seen him run. He took the field and threw either 91 or 92 on every outfield throw with plus carry to the base showing easy and smooth actions throughout. His first swing in BP hit the fence and several others did the same or went over. His body is a plus Major League build at 6 foot 5 and 205 pounds with lots of room build on and his athleticism is also in the plus range. At the plate his power is not the only thing Sweeney has to offer. His strike-zone awareness is one of the best we have seen from a High School player in the past couple years. In the games, he hit everything thrown at him and hard, many for extra bases. On 2 triples, he showed good home to third speed and played for keeps all day long. He showed in a class of his own and is a potential 1st round draft pick for the 2003 Draft this year.

Sweeney is considered one of the top prospects in the Nation and did nothing at the indoor showcase to suggest anything different. At 6 foot 5 and 205 pounds, he has one of the best baseball bodies in the Country. He has a long and lean musculature with an additional 20 pounds from last year. A trend that will continue as he can easily afford another 20 pounds under his frame. He has 2-way Major League ability and showed much of it indoors. On the hill, the left-hander showed a consistent Big League 89-90 mph fastball that never dipped below 88. The fastball showed life and location with an easy delivery in balance, indicating there is more in him. His slider was clocked between 78-81mph and his change-up showed consistent 79mph velocity with sink. Both off-speed pitches showed in the plus catergory and he commanded the strike zone throughout his innings. At the plate he showed a professional approach with quiet hands and balance. He showed Major League bat-speed and plus power with potential for more. His swing is short to the ball and he showed that he can drive the ball to all fields, hitting it where it is pitched. He does not miss the ball when he swings and showed that he can really hammer good breaking pitches. Sweeney appears to have gotten better every time we see him, and we see him a lot. Scouts are still trying to figure out where they like him best as he continues to make major strides in both areas. If the indoor showcase is any indication, we are also trying to figure it out. He will attract lots of attention this spring and could be a very early pick in the June draft.

Sweeney looked like your typical 1st rounder during the workouts. He runs MLB average or a little better at times. His throws from the outfield look effortless. He has a plus arm, very accurate with 91 velocity and outstanding carry from right field. In BP he hit ropes with a John Olerud type swing. He might project to hit with more power than Olerud. He holds his hands low, but it seems to work well for him. His timing at the plate was a bit off in January, but we've seen him hit against the top pitchers in high school baseball and he doesn't strike out very often. He does smoke line drives that get off his bat in a hurry. Is he a pitcher or a player, that is the MILLION dollar question. He threw 89 easy as pie in Ft Myers with a upper 70s sharp slider. He faced three good hitters and got 3 strikeouts very quickly. We've seen him throw 90 after 100 pitches in the 7th inning last year. His body has gotten even better, bigger and stronger. We would expect every Scouting Director to see him this Spring. He really looks the part, he's easy to find on a baseball field.

Sweeney looked a little tired and sluggish at this event. That said, he was still the #1 prospect at this event, by a long ways. Outstanding 2-way talent, who could be drafted very early either way. Complete package including the plus MLB body!

Sweeney was the top prospect in San Diego as both a pitcher and position player. He showed outstanding outfield actions, threw 89 mph from RF, hit for average and power all weekend and ran a 7 flat in the 60. On the mound he threw 88-90mph with a hard slider and good change-up. Although he made things look easy at times he played hard all weekend with several stolen bases and competing every inning.

Sweeney is good enough to be an early pick as both a player/hitter or as a left-handed pitcher. At tropicana he only topped at 88, but his slider was nasty and nobody got a good swing. We've had him in the low 90s before. He might have been the best hitter at Tropicana, hitting them out in BP and hitting ropes against the best pitchers in the country. At 6'5/185 he runs a 6.8 60, he's for real!

Sweeney is a High School Junior that is not eligible until the 2003 Draft. He was the only underclassman in the event. He is a big Left-handed pitcher with 2-way potential. He has a plus athletic body, ran a 6.83 in the 60, showed 90 mph OF arm strength and a strong, fast left-handed swing with power. In BP, he sent a couple balls over the right field wall and hit the RCF gap hard. In the game, all he did was hit line drives. On the hill, Sweeney kept his fastball consistent at 88-89mph and touched 90, on the low corners. He also had a 78-79 mph slider and showed one plus 78 mph change-up. We have seen him as high as 91mph this spring but he was as sharp as ever at the Pre-Draft. 30 MLB clubs in attendance all noticed.

Sweeney is one of the better 03 prospects in the country. Some like him better as an outfielder/power hitter, but we have a hard time forgetting that he is a 6'5" lefty that we've seen touch 91 mph.

Sweeney had a good performance both pitching and hitting. He has good wood power and bat-speed but pitching against and defeating the Team Florida 02 team was a gem ! He topped out at 88 mph in Jupiter with good off-speed stuff.

Ryan is one of the top 2003 players in the country. He is a big left hander with a great athletic body. He topped out at 89 this fall. He also has good power at the plate and it is a legitimate two way prospect.
