David Edwards is a 2006 third baseman/ right handed pitcher from St. Cloud, FL with a medium build that shows strength at 6-0, 180 lbs. He has very good arm strength at third base and good overall defensive actions, espeically with his feet and lower half. Edwards ran the 60 in 7.11 and has lateral quickness as well. Offensively, Edwards hits from a narrow, upright stance with a small stride and tight hands through the ball. He generates good bat speed and shows pull power when he gets his body rotated through the ball. He has surprising strength in his hands. Edwards also showed his abilities on the mound, throwing 90 mph from a high 3/4's release point. Edwards gets good drive from his lower half and has a short, quick arm action. His curveball was 75 mph. Edwards is one of the top 2-way prospects in the country and could excel either at third base or on the mound or both for the right program. He is also a very good student.

Edwards is a 6-0 junior athlete from Central Florida who had one of the best showcases of any of the nearly 500 prospects in Fort Myers. We say "athlete" because, while Edwards lists himself as a primary shortstop, he could go either way as an infielder or pitcher. He has skills and confidence in both roles. As a pitcher, Edwards threw 3 innings. He struck out the first 5 hitters and retired 9 straight overall. His fastball was 84-89 mph and it’s a heavy, sinking pitch. His 66 mph curveball was light on velocity but heavy on spin and had good sharpness. Edwards threw a 71-74 mph split finger as his change up and it had good tumbling action and deception. Edwards showed a good understanding of how to mix his pitches and get hitters off balance. Edwards the hitter got everyone’s attention by hitting the first game pitch he saw for a home run and going 3-3 that first game. That followed on the heals of a very nice BP session that showed Edwards’ present strength and raw bat speed. When Edwards stays back he has a very nice, level swing and above average bat speed. Defensively, Edwards probably projects best to third base. He runs and throws much better than his workout times indicate but he still might be a step short for shortstop at the upper levels. One other thing to note about Edwards’ game. He’s a very intense player who wants to beat you, even if it’s at a December showcase with teammates he’s never met before. He plays hard and plays for keeps. Very strong follow with top level college potential! Good student as well.

David is a 2006 grad with a sold average frame and lean athletic build. We like this kids options, can come out and touch 90 now with good bore to fastball when down. He has pure arm strength, which is something that cannot be taught. He just comes out and tries to throw the ball hard. Good two way guy that has good hands and agility to play any defensive position. Has now raw power and needs to work on going the other way to be a full dimensional hitter. Quality kid with a lot of upside to his baseball ability that will definitely spark a lot of interest at the next level. Top level "06".
