Brian Alben is a 2008 1B/LHP/OF with a 6'2'', 170 lb. frame from Hilo, HI who attends Waiakea HS. He has a young build that is loose and slender. Alben is a good left handed pitching prospect but ony played first base and outfield in Cincinnati. He is smooth and athletic at both positions and his speed and arm strength could be wasted at first base. Alben has a smooth, low effort swing at the plate and stays inside the ball well. He has bat head skills and finds away to square up solidly on the ball, even when he was a bit overmatched. He'll hit the ball where it's pitched. Alben doesn't have much strength right now, especially in his trunk/hips and getting stronger will help drive his bat speed, especially given his hands and hitting skills.

Brian Alben is a 2008 LHP/1B/OF with a 6'1'', 155 lb. frame from Hilo HI, who attends Waiakea High School. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Alben has a lively, wiry strong build and some twitch actions. His bat speed and arm speed are both very good and he runs well, with a chance to actually run better with the addition of some lean muscle fiber. He is an exciting player and has a chance to be one of the top two-way prospects in the West in the '08 class. Presently he lists himself as a primary pitcher but long term, his bat may pass his pitching. He swings aggressively but under control and can center the barrel on the ball, from gap to gap. His swing is flat and easy. Alben showed the ability to let the ball get deep and drive it the other way but he also showed the ability to turn on pitches on the inner half and hit them for power. He struggled a bit vs. left-hand pitching. Defensively he moves to the ball well and has soft hands. All his defensive tools suggest that he can move easily to the outfield, either left or right field. On the mound Alben is quite good to. He has a quick arm and a mid-80s fastball, with the promise of upper-80s in the near future. He spins the curveball well and gets some depth. He also has good hand speed with the change-up. If he can learn to use the fastball more, his secondary stuff will be that much better. All his stuff is quite slippery if the sequences are right. In all Alben is an oustanding college prospect that should develop into a pro prospect in college, if not sooner.
