2006 California Uncommitted Showcase
Anthony Smith is a 2007 SS/2B with a 5'7'', 155 lb. frame from Perris CA, who attends Perris HS. Smith was only there for one day of the showcase and was fun to watch. Had he been there for two days he likely would have earned a spot on the Top Prospect team. He brings some tools to the table and should continue to get better in the coming years. He has a strong, compact athletic build, with some explosiveness, and will get stronger, with more size to gain. Offensively he has an aggressive set-up and gives off the sense that he can hit. Smith has a short, compact swing and a quick bat. He is a gap to gap hitter and has good power for his size. He can explode through contact, using his hips to create additional power. Smith is a good baserunner with usable baseball speed. He would bring an interesting combo of contact hitting, power, and speed to the top of the line-up. Defensively he showed some nice actions. Smith has good feet and an accurate, quick arm. He showed feel by making easy, flip throws and a nice release. He likely moves to 2nd base at the next level, but certainly is a capable shortstop. Smith is a solid student and a player on the verge of making a name for himself. His game is built to excel at the college level.
