Shane Smith is a 2008 SS/2B with a 5'11'', 165 lb. frame from Marietta GA, who attends Wheeler HS. He has a medium build and developing strength. Smith hits from a closed stance with low hands to start his swing. He was a bit long to the ball in batting practice but shortened up his swing against live pitching and showed his hitting ability in the games. Smith had solid line drive hits in consecutive at bats against 84 and 86 mph fastballs and took consistent quality swings. He has a bit of pop in his wiry frame and should continue to develop. Defensively, Smith plays much faster than his straight away speed times (7.75/4.61). He showed good range multiple times during games, anticipates well and does a good job of circling balls. Smith's fielding problems were once he got to the ball, his hands were a bit stiff. His arm strength plays best at second base. Smith is a very good student.
