Austin Moyer is a 2008 1B/P/3B with a 5'11'', 210 lb. frame from Greensboro NC, who attends Southeast Guilford HS. He has a thick, strong body that he can firm up some but is a very good athlete. Moyer ran the 60 in 7.61 and threw 80 mph during drills from first base. He has excellent defensive skills at first base, with soft hands, very good balance, advanced footwork and more than enough arm strength. Moyer also showed leadership skills during the games, which was nice to see from a 2008 prospect surrounded mostly by 2007's. Offensively, Moyer is a left handed hitter who does a very nice job of getting coiled and in position to swing the bat and fires his hips early to give himself more torque and bat speed. Moyer's swing can get a bit long but he took consistently good swings against live pitching and showed loft power to right centerfield. He's a good looking young hitter with an idea how to hit. Moyer also pitched, showing a fastball that topped out at 86 mph and a big breaking 73 mph curveball. His 75 mph change up shows some quality. Moyer threw with some effort and struggled with his command some, but his arm strength was evident. Overall, Moyer has a good collection of physical tools and shows good game skills for a 2008. The big question for his future is getting his body under control. He could really develop in to a nice player. Moyer is an excellent student.
